My favorite sci-fi standalone - "Futurological Congress" by Stanislaw Lem. While the main character appears in other books by this author, all of them are standalones and can be read independently. The story is basically about how in an attempt to break down the protests, the police puts the psychogenic sedative drug in the water supply system of the hotel our main character happens to stay in for the conference, and so then on he starts descending into this trippy dystopian universes.

The premise of Six Wakes reminds a lot of the tv show Dark Matter (interestingly, not based the book of the same name). A crew wakes up on a spaceship with no idea who they are or how they got there, and craziness ensues. So great! Also, love this video series idea! I don't have the money right now to invest in whole series of books, so I'm currently much more interested in stand alone recs.

Hearing you talk about The Midnight Library makes me want to read it so much! I loved The Humans when I read it based on your recommendation and I can't wait for this one! I would really recommend a TV series that has a very similar plot to The Midnight Library and I think you'd love it! It's called Being Erica (I think it was canadian, but a little bit older, so I hope you find it somewhere to watch). It's about Erica who's 30-ish and her life has not gone the way she'd hoped. One day she basically hits rock bottom and meets a psychiatrist (Dr. Tom) who helps her ... But the twist is he sends her back in time to rewrite her mistakes and regrets and "fix" her life. I loved the show so much and I think you would enjoy it as well. :)
@kalikalii0773

P.S: It's very wholesome and it's more about learning from our mistakes and growing, rather than just deleting them and thinking that would help us more.

You’re my favorite BookTuber by far, but I’m a bit confused on this one. How is “The Priory of the Orange Tree” underrated? Everyone I’ve seen who has read it has raved about it, and it currently has a 4.16 on Goodreads. It’s on my TBR for sure! Also, it’s kind of adorable that you always say “To Be THOUGHT if Fortunate” instead of “To Be TAUGHT if Fortunate.” As a foreign language teacher, I think this is the cutest.

I don't usually read SF or fantasy but I did read The Storied Life of AJ Fikrey and enjoyed it. I am a mystery, non-fiction reader, usually but the premise of the mystery you mentioned seemed too thriller for my taste. I also have been disappointed by recent thrillers starting with Gone Girl. Hey, Emily! I know that you love time-travel and sci-fi stuff - have you seen the movie Coherence (2014)? Although it has a different premise, it is a perfect companion for "Replay" in my opinion. It's a psychological suspense movie (thrilling but not scary) about how during the passage of the comet over the Earth, parallel-universe versions of the same dinner party start to intertwine with each other and the madness ensues.

@@BookswithEmilyFox What about Mr. Nobody? It's a sci-fi about 118-year-old man retelling multiple alternate versions of his life - in many of which he dies, making his very existence paradoxical - while other versions get intertwined between themselves, making you question which life is "the right one". I would compare the romantic storyline in this movie to the one in "About Time" - it's so beautiful and mesmerizing how characters' lives diverge and they still end up meeting each other under different circumstances and desperately falling in love.

So i read to be taught if fortunate from your recommendation and it was really a gentle writing style/story and i needed that. I also loved the LGBT representation because it was so well Incorporated in the book and so positive and soft. I also bought Six wakes and A.J Fikry to read, right after this video!
