I was in the bookstore yesterday staring at all the discworld books, not knowing where to start so this is like my prayers being immediately answered

My heart is elated to know we're going on a Discworld bender! When Harry Dresden refers to Pratchett (twice I think, separate books) I squee so hard each time

As a mail man, the title got my attention 😂 I “read” (listen) to books while I’m delivering mail every day. Would be a funny one to read considering my job.

One of the best things about Discworld is that because each book is a complete story, you can pick up pretty much any book and have the best time of your life. That's why I think "reading orders" are nonsense. When I first got into Discworld, I didn't read them in any order. After my first (Small Gods, which got me hooked) I would just grab whatever books that were available or caught my eyes at the library. And because I read Discworld out of order, it was so much more of a treat to catch references/Easter eggs/favourite characters from other books!

For those who giggled at the name (Moist von Lipwig), it's also a pun based on who he is - A "lipwig" is a false mustache. Moist is a master of disguise. *Edit:* Oh, and Daniel, it's pronounced "More Pork". "Ankh-Morpork". (Also, a "Morpork" is a kind of owl, IIRC). The name isn't _just_ to sound silly, it's also a riff on many medieval towns founded on rivers, often being two towns that grew together.

Discworld is always a treasure. Terry Pratchett was absolutely a master on subverting and growing tropes into something special, all the while adding his own charm and wit. He was gone too soon (but even a million years would be too soon to lose Sir Terry Pratchett).

Sir Terry appreciation always puts a smile on my face.

I don't think there will ever be a book quote closer to my heart then the one where Moist says something along the lines of "He could keep living this life as long as he told himself he could stop the con and run away at any time." Not an exact quote there but something about Moist's whole thing really did make me cry as an imposter syndrome/anxious person. It's such a well written and funny book but something about how Moist is written and him being forced into a position where people love him, and he succeeds because of his strengths and making it look effortless while you the reader can see how desperately he is working the entire time to just keep on top of everything just hits so deep. Terry Pratchett is the absolute GOAT and I do not think there will ever be another like him.

Love it that you went for a Moist book. Everyone rates Vimes, Granny and Death as their favorite characters, but for me Moist is the most well rounded of Pratchett’s main characters.

That's hysterical! I actually started discworld from Going Postal and my friend (we both are big fans of yours) told me "noooo what are you doing!" So thank you for settling that argument forever!

Can't wait to see your discworld vids, I am nearly 40 and have adored this series and the wider works of Terry Pratchett since I was about 11 when my uncle gave me a second hand copy of the colour of magic as a present. So much of my personality and my sense of humour was shaped by Terry Pratchett and his amazing Discworld books, to this day one of the few genuine regrets I have from my life is that I never got to meet him before he passed and thank him for creating such a vibrant creative world full of amazing fully realised incredibly funny characters.

Please do the Commander Vimes series next😍. I am such a huge fan of Terry Pratchett, he is just GENIUS. The most intelligent books I’ve ever read, I think - and still they are funny and have so much heart! It is awe inspiring.

My girlfriend recommended Discworld to me and I chose this book for my 1st. Perfect decision for me. Finished it a couple weeks ago and I'm stoked to hear you talk about it.

Haven't seen this video yet, but I have read Going Postal a few times and I'd agree it'd be a decent entry point into Discworld. Personally, I think Guards, Guards! would be better but that's my favourite series. Mort was my entry point, followed by Thief of Time then Small Gods (the first I found on a family member's book shelf, the next two were all my local library had).

So very, very happy you'll be covering Terry Pratchett. I'd say more, but when it comes to Terry I can never say enough. What I WILL say is that reading (and re-reading) his books has made me try and be a better person. That's his unbelievable and special gift.

A week ago I started listening to Discworld in chronological order and I absolutely love it. I'd already listened to Small Gods (thanks to you) a year ago but I thought it was impossible for the rest of the books to be as enjoyable and well written, but I'm laughing just as much with his first books as I ever did with Small Gods. Who would have thought luggage could have so much personality!

Hogfather was my introduction to Terry Pratchett and Discworld. Immediately launched both the world and the author to the very top of my list of fantasy favorites. ❤️❤❤ Going Postal is also a favorite.

I think there is Discworld book to everyone tastes. Ricewind and baggage, Cohen the Barbarian, City watch, Wizards and Unseen University, Death are just priceless. Philosophy, absurd of our daily life like bureaucracy, people weird actions, some religion dogmas or mythology, and overall just making fun out of serious world creation makes those books really unique and enjoyable. I was so sad to hear about Pratchett first sickness and then his death, I never felt such loss for world from death of someone I haven't even personally knew.

I read most of the books as a young teenager so have had the joy of re-reading them as an adult and seeing things I never saw before whilst I also get hit hard by nostalgia, let the tears flooooooooooooow.

I agree that this isn’t my recommendation for starting the series. I remember it having way too many inside jokes to be a first book.

Discworld is awesome, grew up with discworld references all around me as a kid and finally picked up the books this year starting with Tiffany aching, Tiffany aching is such a good series, hat full of sky is my favourite so far, is just so beautiful omlll after the Tiffany aching books I’m reading the witches which is technically chronologically backwards but it still works cos discworld can be read in any order really

I love this book so much for all the reasons you described. The scene of the first meeting between Moist and Vetinari and the scene from Guards Guards! where Carrot breaks up a fight at a Dwarf bar are things I reread on their own regularly. They are so funny and perfectly done.

I re-read Hogfather every single christmas. And while Death is a fan favorite for a reason, Susan and Teatime are just delightful characters I love dearly.

I'm dying waiting for someone to cover Monstrous Regiment still. So happy about this. And I should be able to start picking up more Discworld myself soon.

As an Aussie... The Last Continent has a special place in my heart.

I started with The Amazing Maurice, which has also just recently been made into an animated movie. Granted, I was maybe eleven, but still, it's where I started! 😁 Then the Wee Free Men, and then Guards! Guards!, I think. I don't have really strong opinions about where to start, except maybe don't start with the first books (even Terry himself said not to do this), and for the Watch series I would start at the first book, although most books can be read on their own just fine as well. The Tiffany books and the Watch books are my favorite series, and Monstrous Regiment is probably my favorite standalone novel. I think Monstrous Regiment is also a good place to start. It has all the social commentary, and a relatively unique story even within Discworld. But in the end, any place is probably good to start, if it means you'll start reading Discworld!

Genuinely can't express what this series of books means to me started reading them when I was twelve and am starting the last one now at 25 and these are my favourite books so excited to see more perspectives on discworld and know more people are reading it. Post series depression on this one is a BIGGIE.

I started with Night Guards by pure chance, and it's still after reading most of the series, my favorite Discworld book... and one of my favorite book of all times. Thank you for talking about Discworld, I'm so happy!

Can confirm that Going Postal is a great entry point! Though i had read the first Discworld novel over a decade ago, the second i read later on was Going Postal and that is the one that made me fall in love with this author's world and use of absurd setting for social commentary. Great stuff! Also, quite ambitious of you to want to review all of Discworld but i am definitely looking forward to it!

Small Gods is a good starting point, too. Equal Rites was the first that I read (of course, there were only 3 books out at that point).

It's one of several starting points I've recommended to people. Depending on their interests and what I think they'll like: Going Postal, Men at Arms, Reaper Man, and Wee Free Men. If it's close to Christmas, The Hogfather as well. A little bit into the deep-end without some background, but it is still good.

Just finished reading this because of this recommendation, I absolutely loved it can’t wait to read more discworld.

Another standalone book from early in the series is Pyramids which I'd love to see you cover Daniel.

After first reading Equal Rights, I immediately went to the beginning, The Colour of Magic, and read them all in order. Except the Tiffany Aching books, took me a while to pick them up. I recommend starting either at the beginning, or with Mort or Equal Rights.

By sheer coincidence, Going Postal is the first Discworld book I found at a Goodwill when I began looking to start the series. Now it will forever be my favorite entry

Will LOVE seeing you make videos for every Discworld book. I've introduced five people to DW with Going Postal. All I've told them is it's satire/absurdism and it's basically Hitchhiker's in a fantasy world rather than sci-fi, and all five of them loved it and asked which book to read next.

Great review! This and The Truth are possibly my most re-read Discworld books. I love the way the fantasy world is used to reflect our own.

I started with Witches Abroad. Back in high school, I had just finished Good Omens and decided to look up other books by both authors and the concept of Discworld intrigued me, so I decided to check it out. I chose by random, and I am so glad that's where I started.

Great choice for an introduction, Going Postal was my first discworld experience back when I kid (who was still a little too young for discworld if I'm honest). Pratchett was such an incredible wordsmith. I honestly believe that a large chunk of my personality, sense of humour and love of language can be attributed to the wordplay found in both Winnie the Pooh and the Discworld series! To be surreal, philosophical and narratively engaging whilst also being sidesplittingly stupid at the same time is just... *chef's kiss*

This is the book I started with! I just picked it up at the library and I fell in love with Pratchett right after. I read all of his discworld books sense, and I'm planning on a reread soon!

So looking forward to more discworld videos. Going Postal was such a great read and happily the 2 part adaptation of it some years ago, was surprisingly very good. Having more recently read the Tiffany Aching books I would also recommend them as an entry point to the discworld...it's sort of 'discworld lite' in my way of thinking 😊

Going Postal was my first DiscWorld book! Now I’m hooked!

I kept hearing you talk about how good discworld is and i finally got gaurds gairds on audible and loved it. Im listening to mort now and I like it, ive heard the death stories are great. I also got malazan book one but havent started it yet

So so excited for this series!! I have grown up on Terry's writing and Discworld is categorically my favourite fantasy series ever. Nothing beats it in my book. So this is going to be great fun to hear your thoughts & feelings! As for what to cover next. I often recommend the stand-alones for brand new readers to just get a taste of his style/the world so Pyramids or Monstrous Regiment maybe?!
