The concept of mini-retirement changed my life. I'm no longer waiting for some retirement paradise when I'm 65. It helps to know how to fund the lifestyle. You know, making money while you sip that piña colada by the beach does help. I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise.

Yeah, people miss that part. You don't jet out to Puerto Rico with your life savings. Proper investing and a good business acumen are big pluses. Invest in the stock market, real estate, build businesses. That's just it.

Safe to say not everybody has the skill to pursue investing. But it's always easy to follow the advice of someone who knows how to i.e a financial advisor. You could anywhere between 10--40k with the right ones. Online businesses are a good bet too if you are savvy.

I live in Rochester NY and homicides are up 60% from last year. I recently heard on the news that now we are almost double the murder rate of this time last year. So crime, which I personally believe is related to defunding police, is a major reason that I'd leave. Therefore, I would seek low crime (especially murders) and no defunding (non -Democrat) states. Cost of living, low rent, employment, not early release of those on patrol, weather are other considerations. This was a good presentation, but since things are changing so rapidly I'd appreciate you doing this again, an updated version please.🙏 NY state is going to be a heavy crime state, and NY city already is bad.

Sorta shouldn't let people know this but the best combo is all in Nevada. Reno in summer/spring/fall, Vegas in winter. Small houses at each end solves it all. No state taxes. Skiing 15 minutes from any house in Reno. Vegas cheap and world class sports and entertainment. Cheap houses in both cities.

Great video and getting on the road to a new location is exciting! However, I cannot help but see history repeating itself as the great migration, especially those who are living out of their RV's, vans, cars, and moving constantly for work purposes (even while retiring), look like the 2020's version of The Grapes of Wrath.

Hello ZombieMommy , Thanks for your well thought out comment. You make a good point about this migration and "The Grapes of Wrath". This migration going on will be very interesting to see how it works out. Some areas are getting massive growth and it is going to throw cities out of balance. Then if these people leave for lack of jobs later, we will probably see areas with massive amount of empty buildings.

Well done Richard. As you have said before think about what you plan to do after you retire. If your plans involve doing things outdoors move to where that is easier. If they involve cultural activities a city or a large college town may be for you. States are really big and there are many diverse areas. Always rent for at least a year before you commit to any one place.

When my husband & daughter moved to Florida from Ohio, We didn't know anyone down here. But we decided to look close to I-75 . So that when our family members came down, And they did, after we established ourselves. 3 sisters and his parents came , we helped them find homes , even let them stay with us for awhile. . I- 75 is the main interstate route going through Florida. . As you said to rent first. We rented a 3 bedroom double wide mobile home. With utilities getting turned on , first last and deposit cost us little over $2000.00 . But jobs were easy to find for myself. But my husband had a hard time as he was an Engineer for the Rail Road. But laid off so often. Then a work place accident. . Low wages for men . But I made good money in the restaurant business. And after renting for about a year. We bought a home close to the rental .We never left . Been here 28 yrs. Now . Rental is best to find an area you like . And jobs available. Central Florida is.nice. clean. low crime. And people are friendly. Much cheeper than costal areas. Still great weather. . Good advice in renting first. I hope you all find a place you like and enjoy your retirement.♥️🙏💙 Regards Brenda

(Belatedly)Thanks for the video. Thought-provoking factors. I would just add, in addition to natural disaster concerns you mentioned briefly, climate change predictions are already for some dramatic shifts over the next 20, 30, or 40 years. So consider your possible remaining life span. Also, tax-friendly or -unfriendly sometimes varies for retirees vs working people, so check those factors. One more issue to consider is political climate. In terms of laws impacting rights we may value, this usually is a state by state issue. But in terms of views of the general population, this seems to vary by locality, with metro-areas far more liberal and rural areas far more conservative. As for me, I am looking to retire in 10 to 12 years. I grew up in Washington state and miss the "vibe" and the natural beauty, but NOT the dreary cooler seasons, and NOT the skyrocketing cost of living. Having lived on the Gulf Coast for 35 years, in Louisiana the past twenty, I have only a modest 401k and barely a starter home. I can only afford to retire somewhat with modest cost of living. Surprisingly, as bad as incomes are in Louisiana, and also very costly(auto and home) insurance rates, cost of living here is solidly in the wrong (high) half. Cost, climate/natural disasters, crime, and natural scenery are my chief considerations, in that order. I am seriously eying northwest Arkansas.

Thank you for the video. I retired close to 2 years ago to Western Illinois "down state Illinois" it's not as costly as you might think. I looked around at the other Midwestern states to see where I would move to. I compared what effected and is important to me. Some of the things I found is that most of the states have a property tax on your car and in Virginia on a $25,000 car it's over $1000 Yes the property tax is high per $1,000 of assessment but I couldn't find a comparable house for less than $80,000 more elsewhere so I'd be paying close to what I pay here in Property taxes and that $80,000 I saved will pay my property tax entirely for as long as I can expect to live. Then there's a homeowner exemption and a over 65 exemption and for being over 65 you can get your license plate tags as low as $10.00 a year. And Illinois doesn't tax any retirement income. Like I said it depends on what effects you. For instance why would I care that in Missouri cigarettes are $2.00 a pack and in Illinois they're $9 to $12 a pack I don't smoke it doesn't effect me. The point is do your research and see how your move will effect you, certainly you don't want to end up a place you really don't like after all and get stuck there.

Regarding possible future tax increases from moves, not all moves bring equal tax burdens. Retirees generally bring a much lower tax burdens than others because they generally don’t have school age children (for less schools and teachers), they have retirement income (for no commuting and less highway expenses), they have no crime (less police requirements), they have Medicare (for less social costs). Some states (like Tennessee) actively recruit retirees for more income but little costs. I believe this phenomenon helps explain why Florida has not had to increase its taxes. So, net moves alone will not be a good predictor of future tax burden.
@wisdominvestor
@wisdominvestor 3 года назад
Hello Rick, Thanks for your comments regarding the tax burdens. Yes, I agree that the retirees have less tax burdens. in these areas that are seeing massive growth, there are both retirees and people that are still employed moving to these lower taxed areas. I have been watching some of the areas, specifically in Ariz. The income tax may not change as you stated, but as more people move in, the prices of housing starts to increase and right behind housing increases there are property tax increases and increased demand for utilities. In the meantime, it seems like inflation is happening all over on all items and there is probably other factors attributing to this also. @@wisdominvestor probably the best predictor of future tax increases is the amount of unfunded pension liabilities. Hello E and S M, Yes, I understand how you feel about the massive amounts of people moving into Montana. This migration of people from CA and from the northeast like NY and NJ to lower cost states is distorting the values of the lower cost states and favorable states to live in. Arizona use to be a place where retirees moved to when they retired. With the large influx of people to Arizona, it is no longer affordable for the average person to move there to retire. Thanks for your comment.

So true, I left CO as it was being invaded by CA folks driving up prices but wages outside of Denver aren't very lucrative. It drove up taxes, created too much drain on infrastructure, and increased the traffic. Moved to a state I thought I could retire in, and SAME thing, in comes the CA folks pushing up the taxes, rentals, and real estate pricing locals OUT. So glad I didn't buy only rented, cuz the whole ambience of the area changed and don't wanna stay now. Their mindset sours everything. I can say this cuz I was born and raised in CA, hated it, left at 16 and never regretted it. Until the same things I despised growing up there, came squatting in nice areas doing just fine. They come and then you realize they infiltrate and what was once nice, is now unredeemable from their influence. If they could come to an area and LEAVE it BE, then they wouldn't be so despised. But that isn't what happens, they wanna make everywhere else lil Cali.

Just so you know, I live in AZ. The Californians are coming to AZ in droves. Rentals and housing costs goi into bidding wars. This has made the markets also skyrocket: $350k to $810k. Homeowners get between $30-$100k OVER asking price here in the North part of AZ. We are taking the money and living somewhere else more affordable. 07/08/2021

Hello Kathleen Petty, Thanks for your comments about the cost of living in AZ. Yes, I've been watching the housing situation in AZ. I would agree with you on going to a less expensive area. One thing I'm wondering about in AZ, with the a large number of people moving in, this is going to create a demand for larger water and sewage systems and other support services. It would appear that this could cause taxes to go up for everyone. They do charge the new developments extra fees, but I would be surprised if this covers all the extra costs. What are you seeing in this area?
@kathleenpetty1926
@kathleenpetty1926 3 года назад
Wendy Rogers has just put on legislation for having a flat tax of 2.5%. This will drop AZ'S about 8.5%. Flagstaff has always been a crazy area to live in. My Realitor friend days homes are selling between $200-100k over asking price. The strong Liberal ideas influence this area heavily. Coral Evens pushed the minimum wage up to $15 an hour. This has caused many businesses to close and at least half of the disabled community to be kicked out of Flagstaff due to the $15 an hour minimum wage. Gas prices are high here. Current Mayor is pushing masks on ALL businesses and if he had his way we would still be locked down. You can look that one up, both video and news paper. In general, when discussion of politics are avoided, people are really nice here...friendly. The scenery is beautiful here and the south rim of the Grand Canyon is an hour and 15 minutes away from Flagstaff. Plenty of outdoor activities to do here including: skiing (Snowbowl ski resort), Lake Mary is about 10 minutes away, Lowell Observatory is in town--Flagstaff has a dark sky policy so one can still see the stars at night--pluto was discovered here, medium to low crime rates, if it wasn't for the snow, politics, and the cost of living (usually both parents have to work to live comfortably here), I would stay. Also, one needs to remember that Flagstaff sits 7200 ft above sea level. There are those who get altitude sickness and nose bleeds here because we are so high up.The hospital is a level 2 trama level hospital. I know I have told you many things about Flagstaff, but all these factors influence the market here.

Your video is fantastic with many pertinent data points. I enjoyed watching it. Thank you! Could you please share your thoughts about the point you made relating to increasing taxes in states that have significant migration coming in, for example, Arizona. You mentioned that those areas like Arizona may need to raise taxes. My question is why? Aside from building more infrastructure (new roads, street lights, etc), as the population grows, the tax base increases, thereby significantly increasing city, county and state tax income. Also, as people move into lower taxed states, retail and commercial businesses grow, thereby increasing the existing business tax income base as well. Infrastructure could be paid by bonds. Most people are migrating to lower taxed states to avoid higher taxes. When you say the states may need to increase taxes to sustain the increased population growth, that doesn't makes sense to me. Hopefully, those that migrate will not repeat history by voting for legislators that don't have fiscal accountability.
@wisdominvestor
@wisdominvestor 3 года назад
Hello Mr G. Thanks for your comments regarding migration of people moving to low taxes states. You make some good points that more people will support more infrastructure. The additional taxes should help to pay for more infrastructure. Your voting comment is excellent also. see below on the voting comment. Some additional thoughts. When a new subdivision is being developed, the cities in these high growth areas begin to tack on more money for building permits for the builders. Builders then pass on the cost to the person buying the property. This increases property values. The end result, the new property owner is now paying higher property taxes and paying more for their home. This is going on in the Phoenix area now. The cost of buying a home there is now out of reach for many. Also, the infrastructure that is needed in many cases is costing much more than the taxes are brining in. Now does this happen in every area, probably not. But it is happening in some areas. Here is a headline from an article. Arizona Voters Approve Massive Tax Hike On High Earners, Could Your State Be Next? In Arizona, voters approved a 3.5% tax surcharge on high-income taxpayers on top of the current top rate of 4.5%, bringing its new top rate to 8%. The estimated $1 billion in annual revenue, raised via the Invest In Ed initiative, is earmarked for teacher and staff salaries, career and technical programs and teachers’ college. Who is high income for purposes of the new tax? Individuals with income above $250,000, and joint filers with income above $500,000. The 4.5% rate applies to income above $159,000 for individuals or $318,000 for joint filers. Probably many from CA voting for this in AZ. This is related to some of your comments. Thanks for your comments and keep in mind, my comments are friendly to your reply.

As a retiree I think you have a one-sided view of what people mean when they consider the weather or they want a good climate. I definitely consider the weather but what is a good climate? I think it’s very subjective. For me it’s certainly not sweating to death in a humid climate in the south. I want four seasons. I want cold snowy winters with someone else to shovel the snow of course. I don’t mind the cold I can always put more clothes on. But if I’m too hot in the summer I can’t always take more off without getting arrested and offending people. I am an outdoorsy person and plan on doing a lot of fishing, canoeing & light hiking. That said, I love the snow, springtime, and the beautiful autumn colors. I live in southern Idaho and am an Idaho native. However, Idaho is turning into California I think there are more Californians here now than there are Idahoans. I have sold my house put everything in storage and I’m looking for a new place to move. You can bet it will have four seasons though or at least three, the one I could do without is a hot summer. July and August here in Idaho are very long 105° days. Thanks to the recent influx I cannot afford to rent or buy here any more. I feel like I’m being pushed out of my state perhaps because I AM being pushed out of my state financially. Social Security will not cover food and a place to live here, just a place to live if you are lucky. I’m looking at the Northeast. I would love to live in Vermont but unfortunately they are one of the states that will tax my Social Security income. Can’t afford that. New Hampshire is a better bet for taxes, but I understand that both states to get humid in the summer but summers don’t last forever that far north. I spent 15 years in South Florida where my AC ran 11 months out of the year. I won’t do that again. New Hampshire on the other hand has no state income tax and no sales tax. They have a very high property tax but I can’t afford to buy anything so c’est la vie. I’ve been checking and the rent is reasonable and usually includes heat which is something I was concerned about. New Hampshire or bust. 🚛

Hello Sweet Pea, Thanks for your excellent comments on what is the best climate. Hello Lenny Griffin, The 3 top reasons people move to retire are climate, cost of living, move closer to children. It depends on the reason you want to move. If it is climate, it is usually to the south or SW. Due to the migration of people from the NE to South and West coast to SW, it is distorting the reasons to move. I am in the NW and I was considering moving, but now I'm staying where I am because the cost are going up in the areas I would move to, which is the SW. You will need to decide the reasons you want to move and then evaluate if it makes sense now. I am hearing that many folks are moving to Florida. Lived my whole life in Oregon and the mild weather is paradise. We have lots of beaches but the ocean is always cold. We have skiing, hiking, biking, hot springs and every outdoor thing one could imagine. We have lush valleys, waterfalls and high desert. We are very pet friendly and we welcome all types of people. I hear our electricity costs are less than most states because we have a hydro- electric plant in the Gorge. Every rose has its thorns though....our political leaders are killing our will to live here with their relentless efforts to give welfare to as many people as possible and make the hardworking pay for it. Homelessness as a lifestyle is taking over our cities and the resulting filth piles are unbelievable. Homelessness as a medical or addiction problem is perpetuated by all the social services that exist to hand out free food, clothes, healthcare and meth (-adone). Oregon literally just passed a law to legalize small amounts of heroin! The homeless relieve themselves on the sidewalk in front of restaurants, children, etc and the police have been instructed to do nothing. The past year of protests and violence have been encouraged by our leaders, many police have quit and insurance won't cover domestic terrorist or gang or mob violence so those folks who had their businesses, buildings, vehicles and homes destroyed have lost everything. Don't let the lack of sales tax fool you as there are many other taxes and often compounded by additional city and county taxes. For instance, state short term rental tax is .9% but they don't tell you that the city tax is another 9-14%. Tenant Landlord laws have become so backward that rental houses are getting hard to find. It breaks my heart to leave after 56 years but the ship is going down in flames and it isn't getting any better. Our legislators just won't listen.

Here is a video you may enjoy. 🔴Best Retirement States With No Income Tax ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W7otUc7m8ro.html

@@wisdominvestor seriously when and when did Portland get a sales tax. They never have they never will they don’t. Period the whole state every city in the whole state even Portland has no sales tax none zero nata. That means absolutely no sales tax in every city in the state even those you don’t like.

@@wisdominvestor Hi! Sounds like you've been everywhere also. My Dad used to call me "Frommer, Jr" at age 21. I love these videos. You are right about WA. I lived there before feeling so stuck in Las Vegas. Seattle was heaven, but as you said, it became very expensive to live there. It has everything I asked about, but am retiring, and yes, the Seattle VAMC was great. I have a good friend who moved to Ft Wayne, IN from MI and he told me he and his wife walk downtown at night and see single women with baby strollers. He loves the VAMC in Ft Wayne. He only complains about the snow. I love it! I also love parts of NM, although it is in a sad economic state, but parts of it are unreal. Thanks so much for your comments & help. You give viewers hope who are in this situation. Know anything about Carlsbad, NM? I did see the "Best places to retire," video and have lived in Augusta, GA 3 times on active duty. I agree with you! It is certainly perfect for a retired Veteran. Just want this to be my last move. Thanks. "Wisdom is fitting!"

@@wisdominvestor VAMCs, as a whole, are still a mess. Hope the new Secretary can help. A bulldozer is my solution. They are too far gone, and Vets deserve better!

This data need like a vend diagram. Top 10 with Cheapest taxes, best healthcare, best weather, etc. What states intersect with the most attributes otherwise you are just going from site to site with no real answer but only a single attribute. The southeast probably still wins but it would be better then islands of data with no correlation. Finally, how hard is it to add links to the actual data? Also, the crime information you show does not tell the correct story. While a whole state may be colored Red, the state itself may have just a few metro areas that account for the majority of the crimes. The website you used even says the information is for "Infotainment" purposes so I question the value of the data.
