I found no float Cyprus at Lowe's but I did have to dig for a bag of just cyprus. They also have a cyprus blend that is not what you want it has pine and cedar in it. just thought I would add that. they were stacked together on same pallets.

@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 7 лет назад
Juan Ramirez well kind of... not all the bags are actually air tight and somehow the mites can get into the bag. Especially if its a substrate that has moisture already, the mites are drawn to that bit of moisture while on their search for more reptiles to infest. At least thats the only thing I can hypothesize.

Hello TC!, can I mix coco fiber with cypress mulch for low humidity skinks such as the northern and eastern blue tongue skink or will it be too much humid?, also has any of your skinks experienced skin infection due to the cypress mulch?, sorry it's just that I haven't used this substrate before.
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 5 лет назад
Hi! You can mix the two yes and they should be fine I keep all my BTS (Eastern, Northern, Merauke, etc) on coco husk or cypress mulch. With good ventilation, ensuring the substrate isn't soggy, and providing a place for them to be fully dry they have thrived without any skin issues what so ever. Also, a well hydrated and healthy skink can even accidentally ingest some and pass it without any risk of impacttion whatsoever. :-) It's fantastic substrate.

Hi 👋 I am hoping to buy a northern from you (sent an email about details) and I'm worried about mites etc in my blueys substrate. Is there a surefire way to guarantee that my bluey won't get mites? Or any substrates that are guaranteed not to have any bugs or mites that isn't just paper towels? Thanks!
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 4 года назад
Hi, if you bake the (moist) mulch for 30 min at 300F it will kill any mites. Mites in the substrate is very rare. I haven’t had mites in my collection since 1995 doing this.

Excellent work breaking down all substrate use and issues. I really wanted to use cypress for Snowy but actually heard several stories of impaction causing the death of some skinks. I am nervous now about using it and even though so many folks use it and love it for holding humidity well I can't shake the negative feeling . 😞Thank you again TC! Keep up the great work for all of us!😊

@ReptileMountainTV 7 лет назад
Thanks so much. I totally understand your concerns, hard to shake real accounts :) I am curious to hear more about those impaction cases with cypress. I would probably chalk them to freak incidents as impaction can occur with many substrates or not substrate at all actually. . Some more than others of course. I always look at the eating behvior of my animals individually as I know of an animal at a zoo (Varanus ssp.) that would eat rocks... 2 surgeries later... That lizard lives on paper off display now lol. Animals are so amazingly variable.

Hi, I'm Kind of new to blue tongue skinks and I would like to know what kind of bedding to give a baby, I don't know what kind it is going to be yet, but I have herd that the baby's try to eat the substrate some times. If you know what would be good for them please let me know!
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 7 лет назад
Hi, I've seen many keepers keep newborns on paper towels and them move them to cypress mulch once they've got the feeding thing down. I've seen adults eat bedding as well but it was during feeding and some food scent got on the bedding. If you can feed on a full size dinner plate and let the baby climb onto the plate you'll reduce your risk of bedding ingestion. I use cypress mulch on babies that are 1 week old.

My BIO Active setup for high humidity Critters is the dairy cow isopod because they breed so fast, together with dwarf purple isopods. For exotic pets that need it a bit drier I would use powder orange or powder blue isopods, even though you still have to moisten one end of the enclosure once a week. They are a great clean up crew in all ways and for some smaller pets an extra food source.

Hi TC, thanks for the great channel! Quick question: any thoughts on using peat moss as a substrate? I saw it at the hardware store and wanted to get your opinion before testing this out. As long as it doesn't have any chemicals or dyes, it shouldn't be much different from top soil or coco fiber, right? At least that is my thinking. Thanks!

@ReptileMountainTV 7 лет назад
I believe its worth a try. I dont know if it has antibacterial/fungal properties though. Im wondering why it isnt mentioned much??? That makes me wonder... Keep a close eye on your animals scales, eyes, and the substrate as well for any issues. Let me how it goes know if you try it.

So, I am testing the Sunshine brand 100% sphagnum peat moss with my snakes (www.homedepot.com/p/SunShine-3-cu-ft-Peat-Moss-3001-CFC003P/205883917). Been a few days now, so far so good, no visible issues. I did a little research online and found some people have been using it for tortoises. They mention it being pH 3.5-4.5 and therefore mold resistant. I have noticed it being very airy and light if it drys out, so the trick would be to keep it moist, otherwise, it becomes quite dusty. If there are any issues, I will update them here. This is looking pretty promising so far!

UPDATE: I am noticing the peat moss collecting around the tongue openings of some of my snakes, probably being picked up by the tongue flickers and deposited there when the tongue is drawn back in. Today was the first feeding session on the peat moss and I see that if I don't properly dry out the mice/rats, small clumps will cling onto the food and is getting ingested. This worries me, I don't want to cause any impaction issues and will be changing back to my original substrate before the next feeding session. I hope this information was helpful, hopefully my snakes are just going to poop it out with no problems...*fingers crossed*

Hey TC, my Zoo Med Forest Floor cypress mulch is not holding much humidity. I spray the enclosure, and when I come back an hour later, the only part that is slightly damp is the cool side. Have you had this issue with forest floor substrate? I am getting sphagnum moss and an exo terra monsoon mister, but the cypress mulch is frustrating me. Everyone says that it holds humidity well, but my hygrometer reads around 80% for 2 minutes then drops to 35 - 45%. I have an Indonesian skink who needs humidity and I'm worried that he will develop something bad.

@ReptileMountainTV

It depends on what species you're keeping. Its best to measure the humidity inside the cage rather than what's outside as it does vary quite a bit in most cases. I recommend a digital hygrometer. They are quite inexpensive on Amazon. :)

@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 6 лет назад
Yes and no. Paper based litters can be very dry and end up drying the animal out, especially their feet. I would instead use something that can and does hold a small bit of moisture. However, if you live an a very humid environment and the enclosure is also humid then it could be fine.

Hi Ameyr, thanks for watching. I'm not an expert on Merauke's by any means but from what I do know they tend to be longer in total length than the other blue tongue species and as you know do well in higher humidity set ups. I'd say give them a bit more space and keep them humid. I believe they burrow more also so deep substrate could be nice. Check out 221B's video on Indonesian blue tongues in my "liked" videos playlist. Best wishes.

Hi, I am planning on getting a Northern blue tongue, and I live in a pretty dry and hot place. What type of substrate would be best? Also, since it does get pretty hot here, like high 90's to low 100's over summer daily, I was wondering if there is anything I can/ should do to keep part of the tank cool?
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 7 лет назад
Are you keeping them indoors with climate control or outdoors? If outdoors there is a crittercam video where Peter visits Joe Ball's place and Joe has a great set up for out door blue tongues to keep them from over heating and getting too wet during down poors.

ReptileMountain.TV Indoors! We use AC but it still does get hot in my house randomly and that's when I use fans also. Would that be okay?
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 7 лет назад
I would invest in a quality thermostat for your heat elements. If you use an under tank heater/ heat tape/cable I'd set the thermostat right at the temp you want. I'd get a temp gun ($11 online) to ensure the temps in the cage are just right. If you are using a lamp I'd still use a thermostat but set it to just above the max temp so that if your house were to get too hot and the entire temp range would go up the thermostat would cut off power to the heat lamp and not cook your lil skink :) By setting the lamp one just higher you avoid the thermostat turning the light off and on all day long which could stress your skink.
