Maintaining hydration and reapplying sunscreen two times a day is what works best for me. The riceberry sunscreen from liittllextra is currently my favorite, as it suits those with oily or combination skin perfectly. It doesn't feel like a sunscreen, absorbs really quickly into the skin and leaves a matte finish. Probably the only sunscreen that hasn't felt oily on my skin. Absolutely loved it!
I’d love for you to review Aussie sunscreens (i.e. Naked Sundays, Ultra Violette, Bondi Sands), considering that skin cancer is a big issue here in Australia and sunscreens are supposedly highly regulated. Love your content! 😊
I’ve been using the bondi sands spf body lotion thru the fall/winter/spring here in the us south - but do you recommend something with more staying power for the beach?
I don't really want to care about sunscreens and don't want to study it deeply, I'm so happy someone has done the research and made a video so I can just buy the product. Thanks!
For those dark skinned people wondering about biossance. I’m medium-deep skinned tone. I use biossance. I’ve used it for two years. It’s starts out like a white cast, and after rubbing it in, it does disappear after about one-two min. I do rub it out of my eyebrow hair. It does rub out easy.
I have a medium brown skin (more brown than medium). Biossance leaves a little bit of a white-cast if I don't thoroughly (full 2 minutes ^) rub it in. It also leaves more of a white-cast on the more peach fuzzier parts of my face but as long as I properly massage my face with it, nothing shows.
And it’s not just the collars they ruin! Plenty of clothes have been destroyed in areas of high contact point like pockets for me-even with non-tinted sunscreens somehow. But I’ve learnt to just accept it, coming from a place where the daily UV index hits 11 most days. Better stained than pained 😊
I’m allergic to 90% of US sunscreens, so I’m grateful to have so many Korean options. It feels like K beauty is much gentler all around, where US products are more aggressive. Exceptions on both sides of course.
@@roxannelewis3293 I understand that, especially given the SPF rating debacle in the Korean testing system. I saw an interview with someone from the testing department, who said everything is accurate now. I can only speak for my experience, which has been very positive.
To avoid getting tinted sunscreen on your clothes, just use a non-tinted sunscreen on your neck, chest and hands. Use your tinted sunscreen on just your face. Works for me!
i do that too. i used the tinted sunsscreen on my face and the non-tinted one on my neck. still, the tinted sunscreen still gets on my shirt. i tend to rub my face and eyes throughout the day and it often gets on my clothes. i can't stand tinted sunscreen.
The reason they are usually tinted sunscreen is for the visible light blocking properties from the tint. If you don’t use it on your neck, you don’t get those benefits.
I love the round lab for my dry skin. More moisturizing than BOJ and for some reason my skin became sensitized after using the BOJ for a while. If you never tried it, I definitely recommend.
Hi Docs- don’t toss your shirts, accessories et al before trying Dawn powerwash. It actually Works. It breaks down oils, grease, etc. Use on the inside of hat (band). Tint residue disappears. Hope this helps.
Colorescience mineral Flex (tinted) 50 I’ve been using for more than a year now and I have to admit that it is just fantastic for my very sensitive pale skin. The colour blends super and so well that I can re apply layers over the day without any un comfort nor marks, etc, and doesn’t sting at all. Very surprised how it does deliver all aspects no harm for the environment. Thank you for the review always useful should I need to change! 😊
I’m so glad that you mentioned colorscience! I would be interested in their opinion although they may have commented in a previous video. I love it. I also have pale skin so I use the fair skin tone version. As I have a lot of oil still in my 70-year-old skin, I was looking for a product to combine a sunscreen and some color. It helps me use less foundation, which was my goal. I do set it with a little powder and finishing spray, but because I still have good oil in my skin, I do have to blot it during the day. You definitely cannot say that all older people have dry skin, that is a myth. lol!
Great conversations as usual, and I especially appreciated the part about chemical, mineral, what gets absorbed, and making your own choices that are right for you. Plus, recommendations at all price points. Thank you!
Dr. Dray introduced me to the Bondi Sands SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion, and it's by far my favorite active sunscreen I've tried so far! It's the most cosmetically elegant water-resistant sunscreens I've tried so far, plus it's super affordable!
Iv found the world’s best SPF !! Better than Asian trust me. And 90% of my skin care is Korean or Japanese “p20 urban shield” they have any types of p20 it’s technically 60spf+++ AND IS 3x stronger then what the law allows as it’s minimum in Europe and Korea!!! And lasts 8 hours so no need to reapply!!! And no fucking eye burn 🔥
😍 You're both so cute! First, congratulations on 3 million subscribers. We expect that to increase obviously! Thanks for all that you do for us. I am 66 and I've been using sunscreen since I've been 30. It's paid off. When others were going 'tanning' at salons, I was wearing hats, sitting in the shade and wearing sunscreen. Please do an update on your favorite K-beauty sunscreens. K-beauty sunscreens are light years ahead of U.S. sunscreens. Love from Canada!
Australian Gold mineral sunscreen is great. The tint is very good and it is not greasy and does not budge during workouts outdoors. Not sure where it is made but it is amazing. Never have gotten burned on face with this product.
Loved that when I was oilier - never budged like you say - but now that I'm a bit drier, it raises up flakes on my face as it dries down, even tried it over several lightweight moisturizers. 😞 Using a Paula's Choice 30 spf that's working so far, but not tinted so I have to apply a tinted moisturizer over it and it's feeling heavy for our humid summer. sigh...
My favorite mineral sunscreens are: Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 for face, Sephora mineral sunscreen SPF 30 which is new, and DRMTLGY UNTINTED universal SPF 46. I live in Canada for reference.
Isntree has onion version spf 50 pa++++ which is not purple and not hyped up but has newer filter that is less likely to sting the eyes and the protection is better and I find it beneficial for combo/oily skin. Great video as always!
I have been using Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face mineral sunscreen oil-free, SPF 50 for 5 years. This was recommended by you guys and I took your advice. I have been very happy with this product. It suits me well for its effectiveness and reasonable price. I don't intend to change it.
For an active sunscreen I like the Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Face. 80 minute water resistant. It does have some cast but with my light skin it works well for me.
I think european and australian sunscreens are superior in how reliable they are. A lot of korean sunscreens feel like they rub off so easily (I would see it floating on the surface of my tea after taking a sip) My gripe with japanese ones is all that fragrance.

In case someone suffering from rosacea is looking for a sunscreen that doesn’t aggravate the problem, Heliocare’s Mineral Tolerance Fluid works wonders. Started using it 2 years ago and haven’t switched since. Plus it’s tinted so the white cast is barely noticeable
I have been loving blue lizard sheer lotion mineral spf it’s very light weight ❤ if u feel oily or have oily t zone I apply super goop setting powder and perfection 😀
For the best active sunscreen/summer sunscreen, you guys should check out the Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Milk Sunscreen (gold bottle). It is long wearing and water/sweat resistant. Plus the formula is amazing!
Shiseido's anessa range is a staple for me. Always go back to it after trying out the popular korean sunscreens. Water/sweat/resistant, cosmetically elegant etc...always wondered why it is not in the list of popular sunscreens.
The purple onion sunscreen is the one Cassandra Bankson helped formulate with Isntree. I haven’t personally used it but I have seen good reviews on it. I personally love the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen. I’ve went through so many bottles of that one over the last few years! I also very much like the Tula protect and glow sunscreen. It has a nice glow without looking greasy and it’s very comfortable and doesn’t leave any cast on the skin. It’s a bit pricey and that’s the only downfall to that one.
Thank you both for sharing such an interesting video 😊 My skin is very sensitive with Rosacea, I prefer using fragrance free skin care products. My favorite sunscreen is the Vanicream SPF 30 🥰 - this product isn't greasy, hydrates my skin with a matte finish - no white cast. This sunscreen is lightweight with Zinc Oxide. Take care everyone 🌹
Dr. Maxfield would love the CVS store brand SPF 50 Clear Zinc Lotion!! As an oily tan runner, it blends in pretty well, dries down matte, and is water resistant for 80 minutes. On top that, it’s super affordable at under $10 (at least in AZ lol)! I highly recommend!
It's crazy how you guys are able to stack all these sunscreen on the face and not be so greasy looking!! I put a little bit and I looked like I dip my face in a bowl of oil!
Omg! Thank you, thank you, thank you for the outdoor rec sunscreen recommendation! ❤❤ I’m an avid cyclist who’s been looking for a sunscreen for my active lifestyle 🫶🏽😍
Great video Docs-especially SPF 101. As someone with deeper skin, the visible light benefits of tinted SPF to combat hyperpigmentation are clutch (and adding ectoin + niacinamide as the cherry on top) 🍒
A lot of of these ones that you guys say are so elegant and blended sometimes still aren’t elegant and blended for me because I have dark skin. I am so no no matter what happens. I still get white cats. That’s why I have to settle for certain brands that claim to be here or go for what they call the black girl sunscreen brand.
Ever since I started using sunscreen years ago. Till this day I have not stop because I cannot live without out. I don’t know if anyone else feels the say way. But it is a part of my life now❤
LabMuffin recommended Cancer Council SPF 50+ Face Day Wear BB Cream Matte Light Tint and it's now my go to tinted sunscreen. Absorbs quickly, sits well under makeup and doesn't feel heavy.
Korean all the way! Just love it! Two years ago my fav was Beauty of Joseon, last year Skin 1004 this year Haru haru Black Rice Moisture Airyfit! Perfect finishing for my skin specially in the summer! Water proof I recommend the UV Aqua Rich biore. But as they said every skin is different! :)
Perfect timing.....this year i decided to use all of the sunscreens ive been trying out before buying any new ones. I am using my final bottle.. so i am in search if the perfect sunscreen
I❤ Drmtlgy tinted spf 46 sunscreen .Wear it everyday as my foundation and use concealer if I need more coverage, blush, highlighter… easy to reapply as well.
Have you ever prescribed Vanicream Sunscreen SPF60? That is one of the few that will work for my sensitive skin, Fitzpatrick Type 1! I could use almost any sunscreen on the market if we NEVER had Rosacea in my family!
You guys should do a review of every product from summer fridays, is it worth the hype?! Love your content, always on point with advice and great recommendations!
You guys should check out Jack Black Oil Free Sun Guard SPF 45! It’s great for the heat of the summer because it’s 80 minutes water and sweat resistant. It’s a hybrid sunscreen that leaves no white cast. I of course prefer Korean sunscreens but sometimes for the 90 degree days I feel like I sweat them off within 20 minutes of stepping outside just to run errands or commute to work.
Lately I've been loving the Neutrogena Purescreen+ Mineral UV Tint Face Liquid Sunscreen SPF 30, which comes in 4 shades ❤ and Beauty of Josean Rice + Probiotics (SPF50+ PA++++) is holy grail.
I love the Eucerin sunscreen. It’s what I used instead of foundation! I stack my sunscreens. My go to blend is a dollop of the Eucerin and a dollop of the Elf Whoa Glow in Sheer Peach. They mix beautifully. I put that mixture over my Sun Bum gel spf 50.
The Beauty of Josean is my present day favorite. The best thing about it is that it doesn’t make my eyes water. So many of them get into my eyes and I have to immediately wash my face. I’ll try the Freaks of Nature for my cycling and paddling. Thank you for the suggestion!
Can you talk about what you use around your eye sockets? I use mineral around the eye and chemical everywhere else but am concerned that where they overlap they may not be as effective if they are mixing. How do we protect our eyelid skin?
Hey there, I've really been enjoying your videos, a recommendation I'd like to offer is to have a unit conversion from ounces to like grams or something, this makes your video more palatable to those outside the US which I'm sure makes up a decent portion of your viewership
Just a note that if you're sensitive to the smell of octinoxate, that Elta MD UV Clear smells so strongly of it that I can smell the octinoxate on my skin even after I wash off the product! It's a deal-breaker for me at that percentage.
@@maureenmclellan1845 I think some folks can smell it and some can't or barely so, it's weird. Like being a super-taster. I'm a super-sniffer! Back when SPF15 octinoxate moisturizers were our main daily choice, I put up with it, but at over 7% in the UV Clear it's overpowering to me.
The Biossance sunscreen is the best! I get no white cast, the texture is amazing! Thanks for recommending it. Can’t imagine using anything else…for now

Love, love, love the Eucerin, its similar to IT cosmetics CC cream. Been using it for over a year. First I apply Super Goop then I use Eucerin for my color skincare i.e. foundation, sunscreen it is the best! My skin looks really nice with these two products never would anyone think its sunscreen or even that I have anything on my face. Dries down beautifully, no weird color or shinny look. I an fair to medium, dry skin. This is wonderfully moisturizing.
You two might like the new Drmtlgy matte sunscreen. It's like the original tinted sunscreen but matte. I suggest it since you two like the original one.
My favorite mineral sunscreen that doesn't leave a white cast (I have light skin, though) is the CVS brand 50 Clear Zinc Lotion. $9 for 4oz ($2.25/1fl oz). It seems to be the cheapest mineral sunscreen I've found (chemical kind makes my face breakout) that doesn't leave my skin white and dry. Thought I'd share if someone is looking for a cheap choice.
Hi Penn! I've been using Ghk luxe eye cream from Skin Biology (I order from Platinum Skincare) and I find it very good! Very rich and hydrating for the eye area!
Agree w/ you Dr Maxfield re: tinted sunscreen! For me , its so challenging to find a mineral sunscreen that is a matte /satin finish and tinted for tan/deep skin. Australian Gold SPF50 in med/deep tint is my HG for years. I avoid chemical sunscreen because i have hyperpigmentation and ive read that: "Yes, chemical sunscreens can produce heat as a byproduct when they absorb UV radiation, which can potentially worsen hyperpigmentation conditions. Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that causes some areas of the skin to be darker than others. Heat can trigger melasma, a type of hyperpigmentation, especially in people with darker skin tones." Do u agree with this Drs Max n Shah? Im concerned because i really would like to try our K- sunscreens. Also, are the SPF stickers reliable in testing sunscreen efficacy?
Good news, you don't need to worry about this! There is no significant difference in heat between physical and chemical sunscreens. Both chemical and physical sunscreens absorb almost all UV, and the vast majority of heat comes from inferred and visible light, not UV. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iFhzr9DbmWs.html
I’ve heard this too, so I stick with mineral tinted sunscreens. My top favorite is the ISDIN Ageless one and I also have been enjoying the Cotz Flawless Finish.
I agree without you and have the same preferences regarding mineral sunscreens. after a lot of research, trial and error, I found personally that the MDsolarsciences mineral tinted and the Isdin ageless tinted are the best for me. I don't even feel that I'm wearing sunscreen because of how lightweight they are, and they're very smooth/matte while still being moisturizing, not drying, and also water resistant. chemical sunscreens not only cause hyperpigmentation but are damaging to the oceans and coral, are irritating for sensitive and acne prone skin, and not to mention the research regarding absorption into the bloodstream and hormonal changes. even if the research is limited and needs further investigation, if there is even a chance that chemical sunscreens can harm both human AND environmental health, mineral sunscreens are 100% the way to go.
My favorite is DRMTLGY. I have used the Eucerin tinted and it’s okay and will use it. However, i’m headed to Japan and can’t wait to purchase sunscreen. I am planning on coming home with a bunch. They are so much more elegant.
Dr. Maxfield, since you really put these to the test in the ocean and working out, could do a whole video on water-resistant sunscreens that include athlete focused (Zealios both mineral and combo, DermaSport, Japanese Anessa and Biore Athlizm, Jack Black combo, EltaMD Sport combo) and others like Swedish EVY, Spanish ISDIN, Japanese Biore Aqua Rich and Skin Aqua. Most reviewers do not swim for extended periods or surf.
Beauty of Joseon (BOJ) was my GOAT for quite a while, but sadly over time I noticed that it was causing breakouts. Now the Haruharu Wonder Airyfit is my GOAT… plus, the Haruharu leaves my oily skin with a completely natural, skin-like finish, which I prefer over BOJ’s slightly dewy finish.
I dont know how I feel about the Beauty of Joseon one.... It feels and looks amazing, but I have so many new freckles while using it (I reapply as well)... and last year I didn't get any with the same skincare routine and using other sunscreens. :/ So honestly I doubt the full protection, even though I dont burn using it....
I have tried so many sunscreens especially the mineral one and I keep coming back to EltaMD UV Clear broad spectrum spf 46 tinted. This time I bought a package of two so I would not run out during this summer.
Love the video but I dont know Dr maxfield is getting more and more handsome and I have to turn off the lighting on my computer and just listen to the audio bc he is very distracting. I dont see how he can practice medicine without his patients going crazy..wow
I am really suspect of neutrogena sunscreens now. Used one Last year and kept getting way more tanning than when I was using others as I rotated them around. I play tennis 3 times a week at the same time, which is my main sun exposure in the summer as I am heat sensitive. So it was easy to see which sunscreens worked and which didn’t. Their one newer tinted face sunscreen worked but the design of the bottle is horrible and lots of complaints on it leaking.
