You might be getting tired of such comments, but the reality is that, as photographer since I was 10 - in all formats from the AE-1 to field 4x5 to the world of wonderful modernity (I work(ed) in tech).... I might not be be be able to overstate how much I enjoy your posts. Simply, they are superb. Absolutely aquiver to watch you, as well as adore Heaton. You’re simply a joy to watch. - Ever need a place to crash en route to Rainier (I see it out my window daily) or Oregon and all points south. Just signal and and my door is open to you and any horde you might wish to bring. Just crash and make art. - In my better years, I’m alive to tell you the West Coast Trail is simply evil. Pure devilish and a horror beyond anything relative to just about anywhere in the world I’ve ever been. Nepal included. Brutal. Yet, there is that orgasmic waterfall along that route. I suppose the dead, beached whale is long gone, but is the beach hamburger joint that was there in the 90’s, accessible only by foot or boat still there? Don’t know. I was just about to write comment of using light pollution-filters on nightphotography when the lighting/moon-photo appeared. That is just awesome!

Don’t think I’d call the shot with city glow a failure. It’s a great shot of a city on the horizon at night under the stars. It may not be the shot you wanted or were hoping for, but it’s a cool of what it is.

I hear you about often failing to get the shot you go out for. So often, I get a totally different shot, but that's the fun of it for me. I tend to think of it as there's a shot in your head that gets you out of the door, but it's never* the one you come home with. *maybe 0.01% of the time...

First, thanks for the great laughs. Love the composite. I totally understand the comments re: less than stellar photos for the night. I've watched the weather forecasts for days, stared at different weather sites all showing clear skies at night. I'll drive to Maine, stay over night in hotel, walk outside around 2 AM to see ALL clouds. The weather reports still says clear skies. I live on the east coast in Mass so hard to see beyond the light pollution. So, head to Maine, enjoy a great diner and good beer. When you do a capture a great image you cherish the moments.

This is my current favorite channel on youtube, every video is learning and entertaining! Always makes my day better.

Michael talks a lot of sense. Great video its interesting to watch you both change plans as the night rolls on. If you want bad light pollution move to Teesside, I live in Saltburn and some night can hardly see a star!

Have you ever done the masking trick where you block out part of the shot to reduce the light levels, best to use a fuzzy edge and giggle it a bit to blend in the edge.

That's life. Mostly things we plan hard do not happen as planned but things that do work out usually are unplanned. Great series! Happy shooting!!

I always love these team effort video series because you get takeaways from both photographer's perspectives. I watched Michael's first and commented on how surprised I was by the amount of light pollution from Bend. In the end it was time well spent because that image you put together is worth all of the field time as well as the processing time. Spectacular! I am curious if you or Michael have played with these "light pollution filters" that have recently appeared on the market. I have a rather pessimistic outlook on such things but anything that helps, especially living in the eastern US as I do, is worth a try I suppose. "Fasthma" - now I have the words for what I have experienced many times.

I used to hang my legs over edges like that when I lived in Hawaii. Loved it

Gavin - thanks for showing the RAW files and the failures too. Glad you showed a little of the decent after the shoot - I almost spewed my coffee on the keyboard with your "Makes me twitchy... Twitchy like a rabbits whiskers." I've done that hike in the daylight and I might have just slept at the top with the rattlesnakes.
