What is the best thing to use when skidding or moving logs? This video will answer that. There a lot of great choices but one outshines them all.

I have a short chain (german Forstkette) and hook it on that kind of winch line. That way the chain gets all sliding over the ground and the winch line just runs free.

This is awesome so thank alot for adding the links to the products you are using in the video. This is alot to learn to get started. I'm excited

I got a 3 point skidding attachment with tongs off amazon for cheap. I use that to get it set and a chain. The chain is annoying, because sometimes if the tree gets in a bind and rolls the chain slips off, then you got to get off and hook it back up, but its the best thing Ive tried so far.

I have seen too much bad from wire rope/cable. Very interested in the synthetic line though Thank you for the video. This is something I can easily rig

they make redirect pulleys specifically for this if youre doing it alot, its basically a snatch block like shown but without the top piece, itll come with a cone type deal that you secure to the end of your cable behind the hook, youre pulling a tree down or a log out of the woods somewhere the tractor cant go, when the log reaches the turn and the cone near the end of the line runs into the pulley it derails itself so now youre disconnected and the log is at the turn, you can keep winching, or driving without needing to walk down and unhook everything to remove the snatch block from the system maybe not a huge deal doing one log or tree in a spot, but if the same spot has a couple turns and you need to bring 40 logs out of there it changes it from being an day getting in and out and in and out to a couple hours of smooth one motion pulls

Good evening, don't you just luv rigging. It completely amazes me that just a cable on a block and tackle system can lift a derailed train engine with just minimal effort and equipment. Thanks for the info, take care and good luck.

weaknesses are can't tie knots in the stuff (you can but kills the strength worse than rope) and very susceptible to abrasion by dirt. This may all be overcome by overkill with size. so, with bigger sizes you might be right. worth thinking about.

I have been eying the synthetic line for some log doggin on my proprty. I alreayd have a log chain, steel line, rope with a Maasdam rope puller and a snatch block ect..... but yeah I was looking at different synthetic winch lines to do this last night lol.

it has its place for sure in the woods. way lighter!

My property is sloped in places and hard/unsafe to get to. I’ve been using a couple chains, D rings, snatch blocks, and long choker cable, but I really like this synthetic rope idea. Way longer and lighter than my current setup.

What size synthetic cable might be ideal for light duty skidding? 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2".

Amazing! So much cheaper Would it work to buy it in 50ft lengths and connect multiples if I needed it? Only issue I could see is if I’m using a snatch block…

Every time you tie two ropes together you reduce the strength by 30%. It only has a 5 year life, if mud gets into the braid it will be very quickly destroyed and has very poor chafing qualities. For winching vehicles on tarmac it's excellent. For pulling logs or anywhere there is dirt, forget it use wire. If you do buy wire rope, wear gloves as any strands that break are very painful if they stick into you.

I am wondering, how you rigged the cable/rope to the tree. A bowline you said? Or was the bowline to the tractor although I only saw a hitch in the rope there. Thanks...
@appalachiandiy2415

I used a separate sling to wrap around the tree

Synthetic rope is good but there were no mention of the downside.The initial cost to purchase is considerably higher than wire rope. Only a 5yr life expectancy then it's out with some more money. If mud gets into the braiding then it will very quickly break. It's very poor against chaffing.

@simonmusgrovewethey

@@robertducat-qp7qy That's fine so long as you are aware of the shortcomings. I'm not against synthetic rope, it is an excellent product providing it is used appropriately.

What your doing is completely a different thing then hooking a chain or choker cable around a log on the ground & pulling it out with your tractor. Your synthetic rope is no better then plain rope. Eventually its going to snap from wear & tear and if there's a human body or limb in the way its still gonna do some damage.

That's very nice but people with chains and cables pull out big logs , and you toothpicks. Greetings from Croatia ✌️.

It doesn't have a lifespan you drag that stuff around on the ground it'll fray in no time at all.
