BEST Tool For Food Plots? MAYBE Not Here's Why! Deer Food plot cultipacker's can be a great tool in some cases. They are not needed to have a great food plot. Sometimes they make matters worse and folks fail at having a great deer plot.

Best use for a packer on plots is getting the bed firm prior to putting seed out...a lot of plots, especially small seeds like clover and brassicas that only need about 1/8-1/4 inch of soil contact, underperform because the ground gets tilled or disked, then dragged with a fence or harrow making the top layer too fluffy. Then rain forces the seed too far down. If you use a packer prior to seeding to compress the top layer of soil, and broadcast seed in advance of a moderate rain (try to avoid a downpour), you don't even need to cover the seed with a drag. I've planted many a plot without a packer, it's not mandatory, but have had better luck with one than without.

Lol. I hope he has learned more over this past year. He shouldn’t be giving anyone advice on planting food plots from what I saw in this video. I can’t believe compared a weed seed with crazy amounts of vigor to seed that humans have babied over 100’s of years. That is like comparing a tiger that has grown up in captivity for 100’s of generations to a wild one, or a milk cow to a water buffalo. Then contradicts himself with the seed to soil contact crap. I gotta see what else he has told people.

I like the way these new videos are showing different sides of the planting because of course some Newby's don't have any equipment the it allows them to stay in a positive fashion while planting great job Dave

Thanks. Typically the fails come from overthinking and buying in the marking tactics from things that aren’t needed. Confuses folks. Easier the better 👊👍

Essentially all you need for a foodplot is some seed, earth, and sunlight. Cultipacker is like any implement, it helps maximize what you get out of your money and efforts. I always cultipack before and after seeding to ensure good contact but not bury the seeds too deep. Had the luxury of having one on the farm otherwise I wouldn’t have one and would get by just fine without one. 👍🏼

They can be used in a good way just not always needed. People like to pack the soil to much and it creates a hard pan on top like concrete especially with clay type soil

This may be the case in your part the world, but we almost always have to have them. As for the bird pooping and growing without assistance, there are some seed that can survive 7-10 years waiting for the perfect time to germinate.
@belindahorn3611

What do think about using a roller to pack the seed, in a situation where you want the seed to be deeper?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Rollers are ok. Roll before to seed to break up clumps then seed then roll again. Just don’t go crazy with it.

Dave! Love the video... I wasn’t to plant Egyptian wheat and some switchgrass this summer in July to set screening in a field that was heavily disked and dirt is super clumpy.... we do have access to a cultipacker. Should I use it? It’s damn near hard to walk on it’s so clumpy... thanks!
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Thanks. It’s most likely clumpy like that because it’s lacking organic matter with no cover crop and it’s dried out. What I would do is work it back over and just plant your Egyptian wheat then either lightly drag it or run the cultipacker over it
@bobcostas1331
@bobcostas1331 3 года назад
@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors sorry, when you say “work it back over” you mean to lightly disc is again? Sorry, just want to make sure I’m reading this correctly. Thank you again for the response!!!
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 3 года назад
Yes disc it back up. Hard clumpy soil is no good it needs to be disced again and seeded. Keep something in it green and growing year round to prevent this issue

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Okay great. How many lbs per acre OVER your recommended amount should I plant if there are a number of turkeys and black birds picking at it? We planted dove prosso millet and it’s getting hammered by picking/scratching birds. Thanks
@timhatfield6367
@timhatfield6367 Год назад
@bobcostas1331 A scare crow will help with the turkeys and the deer while it's getting getting started and through early growth. May have to move it every week or so, so they don't get used to it. A rubber Nancy Pelosi mask would also be a benefit..lol

I've got alot of dead grass and I'm about to plant. Would you plant into that and drag over it or maybe drag before I plant to remove dead grasses
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Год назад
I would probably drag it then seed it
@jwest613
@jwest613 Год назад
when planting ladino clover a method i heard of using is to disc the soil to loosen several inches of soil to allow for loose soil for a good root system then cultipacker the soil to level out any clumpy soil then spread seed and cultipacker the soil again to press the seed into the soil to get the good "seed to soil contact" Is this a good method in your opinion ?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Год назад
It can work that way for sure. Cultipackers are needed sometimes if they are true cultipackers. Rollers are terrible especially if you have clay like soil.
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors Год назад
If it’s clay like soil all you do is create a hard pan like concrete which then causes water run off and cracked soil
@brycewilliams4439
@brycewilliams4439 11 месяцев назад
with clove and small seed can you disc it cultipact it put the seed out and then cultipack it again?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 11 месяцев назад
You can yes it’s just very soil Dependent. Soft loose soil you would have to cultipack first then seed. Hard clay like soil just have to be careful because it can make it to deep and it won’t poke through. Cultipakcers are much better then rollers.

For small seeds a cultipacker is a must

Are cultipackers necessary - no, is it one of my most valuable food plot tools - you betcha! Cultipackers don’t bury seed, they firm up the seed bed and potentially press that seed into the soil. For small seeds like clovers & most brassicas - if I disc/till the ground - I drag the soil to smooth it out, run the packer over it to firm the seed, seed it, then run the packer over it again to press that seed into the soil - it ensures good seed to soil contact, reduces the amount of seed the birds get (turkeys are birds) and ups the germination rate. What do you think is on the back end of your frirminator - it’s a small cultipacker! If you’re burying seed with a cultipacker - it’s your process, not the tool

you're kinda not right when it comes to the bird scenario. A bird will not poop a clean seed. A bird will poop the seed with a good amount of poop around it. so, the seed in essence will be covered, the same as if the seed is covered when it's in the soil.
