Best Tools & Gadgets Off-Roading in the Cab

Being on a Fire Dept, my first thought was "Where's the Fire Extinguisher?" I have mine strapped to the center console, passenger side, easily in reach. (My 2M Ham radio is on the driver side). Also have an ANSI 2 vest (Hi-Vis clothing), 30 minute flares, and a first aid kit. (Not the cheap store bought junk, I have training and can tell you build your own.) I always have at least 3 torches, you want ones that are magnetic if possible, makes working on things hands free much easier. Vice grips... best quick fix tool ever made. A tub of 95% alcohol wipes. (Keeps your hands clean.) I keep 2 radios in my truck, just because you never know when your buddy will have to spot you, and needs a easy way to communicate to you.

first Aid kit should be with the machete lol.

A little packet of wet wipes or baby wipes are good to have in the glovebox for the same reason of being able to wash your hands without using up any water. Once they dry you can burn them in the fire to cut down on garbage being hauled too.

I have found if you spray paint your tools with a bright color they stand out if dropped at night or forgot on the ground and make yours stand out if someone has tools like yours also if you paint them with a bright girly color they tend to not get borrowed by someone on a long term basses

That "cheap" folding hand saw looks like a Bahco folding saw, they are great and well priced! Most bushcrafters and hikers should always have one of these.. They are the best bang for buck compact saw i've ever used! A great asset to have in the cab.

Nice! I tend to bring too many tools....and they ride in the back of my truck in a drawer. I like the idea of having. A condensed set in the cab. I'm going to start doing that.

Just went back and rewatched this one. I keep a hi-vis vest under my seat. Very worthwhile when you have to pull over on a highway and deal with a tree, flat or breakdown and traffic is a risk. I have also used them to mark unmovable roadside hazards.

Thanks for the video. We seem to have a similar set up. Radio/tools/air pressure stuff/hat/radio/flashlight. I really like the little DC flashlight, I might get one. However, I tend to carry a head lamp as well as a flash light, which is very useful both on the trail and at the campsite because you can talk AND use both hands.

I like to bring a combination compressor/jump charger and all the tools I know my vehicle will use. A day spent researching the different types of fasteners and their size that your vehicle uses is time well spent. Nothing is worse than an easy fix and not having the tool to do it with! My Jump charger has an inverter in it as well, so I can charge stuff while I'm driving without draining my battery, one of the most useful gadgets I carry.

I have the same Gerber machete and Bushnell binoculars. Good gear that serves me well. Scott

Best additions to your tool set I highly recommend are, a rolled up length of heavy fencing wire, and maybe some thinner stuff, a good pair of pliers to twist and cut the wire with, and a roll of good quality duct tape. You would be amazed what types of quick running repairs you can do with those few items. ;)

I have my winch control in the pocket on the back of the passages seat so i can reach it easily nothing worse than trying to explain to someone where to fine the control when your not in the best spot with your foot on the brake also i have an emergency/rescue hammer mounted just under the dash in reach encase of a roll over i can cut my seat belt and smash the window

Lots of good suggestions there. Carry an easy to open water bottle or two. If cold nights have one that has hot drink.

I can't believe no ones said it yet, He's got a knife, That's not a knife, now that's a knife. Ronny think about taking a set of garden shears as well. Allows you to trim branches with ease from the drivers seat just out the window especially if you can't get the door open if your to close to something on a narrow track.

I just wanted to say I'm a beginner and your videos are really helpful. I did couple of tracks you suggested on your website. I started off with a trip to wilbinga, mundaring power line (the easier one), went to dale look out and the major one which i did a week ago was from Jurien bay to cervantes. Thanks for all the good pointers. Got bogged a couple of times at Wilbinga, being my first ever off road trip I didn't have any recovery gear. It was a stupid trip to do without any recovery gear but nonetheless it was adventurous. I didn't get bogged once while driving from Jurien bay to cervantes though I'm carrying all the recovery gear I needed. Lessons learnt.

Great videos, a few people have brought up some of these already but I was surprised that first aid kit wasn't there (I'm sure like me it's not something you use so it's tucked away out of the way). I keep a multi tool on me and an extra pocket knife in the door pocket, the hand wipes are a must (I hunt), and always have the shotgun in reach!

I highly recommend Fiskars, for everything really, they're brilliant. To those who aren't aware, to avoid pinching on your blade, when cutting, if the gap (the one left by your saw) is closing, then pull out the saw and cut from the other side. It means your cutting on the compression side (the direction in which the wood will fall when cut). You need to cut on the tension side(the direction from which the wood is being pushed.) This will stop you saw getting pinched and helps you identify which way the woods going to fall/go when cut, means you know which side to stand on so you don't get hit. Which could be disastrous on larger pieces, especially if you're in the middle of nowhere.

I carry an air compressor behind the rear seats along with some long heavy duty recovery straps. Have an axe under the seat when visiting bushes. Always have extra fuses and relays for all the electronics. Some fuel hoses and hose clamps(incase of emergency) others are in the video

nice knipex tools. great stuff. for flashlights just a recommendation from one that I have now and have been very happy with, Olight makes some incredible lights at a reasonable price. Nitecore as well are pretty good, I haven't actually had a problem with the nitrecore lights I have, but I carry the Olight M1X Striker with me everywhere everyday. Only light I've owned that I also carry at work (electrician) that stands up to the abuse of drops from ladders etc. And runs on rechargable batteries or CR123. And like others said, I always have a first aid kit in the car. also keep a leatherman z rex or benchmade rescue tool clipped to the visor. has a window punch and seat belt cutter in case of emergencies.

Good ideas, Id agree and say you definitely need a first aid kit. But also if you don't have in cab winch controls, a winch controller is handy to have in close reach.

Eh Ronny, been 4wding around the south west for years now and just subscribed...awesome vids..another good tool is a small container off batteries in various sizes mostly AA. AAA. Just for torches and I carry 2 of those little UHF radios you have and they seem to go flat just at the right time oh and dont forget central locking batteries if you own a push to start engine 4x4 you might have trouble starting it without 1

kind of small tool chest, that gets it all done? i carry a pelican 1510 and worry its not enough..fyi i also drive a land cruiser and is pretty reliable.

How about a tablet with satellite internet of sorts? Always good to be connected I reckon. Maybe you should get satellite internet and stream a trip live to RU-vid. I know I'd definitely watch.

very good tip for tools inside cab versus in trunk somewhere where its hard to reach them, like i do. but why you didint had knife there? i think good folded knife is must too. then pack of wet wipes. they best when i get my hands dirty and just wanna wipe them fast and drive. i use those wipes later for some more dirty stuff after they dry.so i keep them in case even after i use them.

I always carry a roll of garbage bags in the door pocket, that way you always have a bag for rubbish handy, wet clothes etc. used garbage bags to tie things together at camp when you run out of zip ties!

might sound random but BBQ wipes.. they work awesome for after working on your truck and you get greasy hands cleans it right off..

I always carry a pocket knife writing pad ( for locals how to get there instructions ) and pen and pencil , sharpener optional . also a 750 ml brita water bottle with filter and my camera . PS like the tool kit set up .

I find the machete very useful. But here in the nanny state of Australia you have to prove justifiable reason to be carrying one. Yes, even in the bush. If you forget to take it out of your passenger compartment, after you're done camping, you'll get charged for carrying a weapon.

I would recommend a head torch rather than a hand held torch. This will allow you to go hands free

Hey Ronny, love your videos and you are really inspiring me to build an off road vehicle. I'm thinking a Toyota Tacoma most likely. I have a question. Could a person live and travel in a vehicle full time for say a year? I'd love to come to Australia and drive from the East coast to Perth in the West and maybe circling the entire continent. I was thinking of pulling an off road trailer with a roof top tent. Can a person find free places to make camp or do we have to pay camp fees? Cheers from Canada

regarding the saws. i do not like the Fiskars saw. it is to flimsy and can be unreliable when the nob is not realy fastened. bucklander or a good sized Silky saw are realy good. MCQBushcraft did make a good review on saws, maybe you can find some suitable information for you there.

do you have air compressor and air tank on board? i plan to make it on my hilux

I don't see a tyre compressor. Is not required to inflate the tyres once our journey is complete?

the orange saw you have is not a no name its a Baco Laplander and is better than the fiskars and you can get replacement blades

if I may make some suggestions I would get a different machete I have seen those break apart and for me at least here in the US I usually carry my pistol with me while off road happy Wheeling

Fiskars has a very good warranty, I chipped my blade on my loppers and I called them up, they sent me a new blade no questions asked.

Here in Nevada USA I carry in my off-road Ranger a Ruger AR-556 and a Taurus 1911 .45 ..... because I can. Have you or are you going to do a vid on RECOVERY? I carry the usual heigh-lift jack with attachments, 2 snatch blocks, tree strap, snatch strap, tow strap and a 12K lb. winch with synthetic cable with wireless remote that can be mounted on the rear bumper.

If you buy a torch, at least buy a lithium iron powered one, and yes I carry a universal use charger it will also charge Nicad batteries as well.

A firearm is always within reach when I’m in the driver’s seat. Used mine many times as I work on a ranch for shooting predators and varmints.

The machete is probably not the best suit for your needs, it's more of a chopper than a slasher. Try a Latin style machete. Much more efficient than the parent style for clearing vines

What do you do for work Ronny? Always wondered as you're a pretty practically minded bloke.....but you're always 4wding so wondering how you fit it all in!

through a shit ton of trial and error, ive come up with everything i need for a weekend trip with mates. now im looking into more of a week long trip, might have to buy a bunch of things that require 1 person to set up. your videos are helpful and entertaining. i watch different 4wding channels and you make the top 3 in my books. where do you prefer to buy gear, brand names, online ect?
