I hope you enjoy my product demonstration for what I believe is the best soft pastel travel box! These Heilman travel boxes are a safe and secure way to travel with your pastels, or even to store them at home for compact and secure storage. I often use my Heilman box at home just to paint from a different location than my studio.
PLUS... I experimented with a new Palette Layout with this "Mini" size Heilman Box. I really like it so far, so be sure to watch to the end where I demonstrate how to layout this new palette design.

Heilman boxes are the best pastel storage solutions available. I don’t have space to leave my pastels out when I am not using them. I simply spent all of my money on pastels and had ZERO money for any storage! So I built my own boxes. I did use wood I have had for other wood working projects, I did buy those swing clips 8 cents each and screws from my storage bins. I did estimates for the costs of supplies after I finished and I figured I would have to buy about $45.00 in wood, clips, hinges, glue, sandpaper too. I did not stain or finish the boxes at first. I did use the leftover house paint the contractor left from our house repaint this Summer, maybe $10.00 worth? I will use my sticks down to the nub! So if I am not good at smaller stick use, I will get better because they cost so much I feel that I must use them ALL! You created a wonderful video showcasing the Heilman boxes! I imagine that the people that are unable to make their own will save up for buying a box for themselves! They spent their advertising money well in sending you product for review and use! Well done Susan, I even want to buy a new box! (Just a FYI I cannot, next art supply purchased will be more colors of pastels or papers) Thanks Susan wonderful video!

Bless you for that great comment my friend. I’ve had to get very creative over the years since I didn’t have a budget for quality pastels, storage or other art supplies. I think that’s why I’m so excited now when I can actually buy something like a Heilman box! I love how enterprising Artists can be and you sure seem to have come up with creative options!

I enjoyed this! I'm thinking of starting a field box/going to a workshop where we'll paint outside, so it was timed well for me too. I see why people say the Heilman boxes are the best, you did a wonderful job of showing the features. It's so personal how we all feel color. I personally find red to be the warmest color. Either way you go from blue it gets warmer, so it gets really confusing. But since I see red as more warm than yellow, I'm in the camp that considers a reddish blue warmer. I usually say "reddish blues" and "greenish blues" because it's just more clear! It blew my mind when I read on Handprint that Bruce (the author of that website) considered yellow and violet neutral -- neither warm nor cool -- because they span the warm and cool transitions. Now I understand this viewpoint better. I definitely understand yellow to be the lightest value and violet to be the deepest value (at least in fully saturated versions).

To the Heilman's - you know what would be cool? A box for oil pastels. Oil pastels melt in the heat so we have to keep them on ice or paint from our cool car here in the South (or anywhere where there is a warm season). A box deep enough and insulated where one could lay ice packs would be great. Would work for oil sticks, too. :) This was great, Susan. Thank you.

Wow, I didn’t even realize that about oil pastels but it makes sense. That is such a great suggestion. Maybe Marge or John Heilman will see this post and figure something out!

Great boxes! I purchased the sketch box(imperfect) and the backpack this year after selling some of my other unused art supplies on EBay and FB. I was able to afford them that way since I’ve not been able to work for a few years. The quality is excellent and will probably outlast me. I like they way you arranged the pastels.

Excellent....very useful.Susan, how do you replace pastels if you deplete individual stick. Eg. If you finish pale pink...how do you buy only that single piece?

That’s such a great question and why I recommend to make a color chart anytime you buy pastels. Some pastel company send a chart with all of the pastel numbers for you to fill in the colors. Terry Ludwig is a company that does this. You can also buy the empty charts from a company at www.dakotapastels.com I’m about to run out of a couple of pastel colors I really love and sadly I can’t find my reference for it. So that’s why it’s a good idea to make color charts and create a notebook for all of your pastel colors.

Hi sweetie, I typically only use pan pastels for an under painting but I haven’t been using them a lot lately. Even though I know many artists use them often, I find myself leaning more towards the stick form of pastels. Hope that helps!

I think these boxes are a status symbol for pastelists. Or maybe they are just rich people who don't care to look for value for their money. Lots of quality boxes out there for far less. Richeson, eBay, Dakota, etc

You might be right… I love mine, but there are more affordable options out there.
