Outstanding video Mark! The Simmod variable ND you were using looks so amazing that I had to enter the competition - and I really don't normally do that sort of thing. Fingers crossed for the 82mm! Also congratulations on passing 3k subs (since I last looked) Boom!

Mark Holtze for c300 I have matte box with insert 4x4 options, but for my dslrs I have some far inferior varisble NDs and only 77mm so I could really do with a high quality 82mm VND. 😁

Mark Holtze yes 3 stops but i often need half stops and depends what lens I use. Cine lenses work better with no in body ND but inserts are great. I just hire them when I need them for specific shoots as they cost thousands with the matte box.

Hi Wesley, thanks mate! I try to be fairly detailed in all my reviews, there's just no point otherwise. The idea is you give what information someone doing researching would want to hear about and let them make the final decision for themselves. Lots of examples because all this stuff matters when you're buying gear. Thanks for the comment and take care mate.

Right now I am using 77mm with step-up rings. For filter glass elements protection, I use aluminum alloy lens caps with in and out thread. I just throw the filter into the ziplock bag and I don't need extra carry bag. Based on your test, this ND is a high-quality product, including this astonishing features, like locking ring!

Hi Mark... SIMMOD only carries 77mm and larger. They look completely silly on an action cam like the GoPro. By the time you put an adaptor ring on (from 55mm to 77mm) it gets too deep and you can only shoot in linear. Vignetting occurs in SuperView or Wide.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 5 лет назад
I have a Simmod ring and it works fine on my full frame 49mm vintage lenses. Yes action cams require ND’s I would say, lens too small. What step up rings are you using?

@@MarkHoltze I have an aluminum cage for my GoPro Hero7 that accepts a screw in 52mm lens. I got the HOYA EVO antistatic 52mm CPL. But on bright direct sunlight the image is far too white.. I'm thinking of stacking a variable nd on the camera and the CPL on the outside. I want to keep it all at 52mm because of the space i have to mount it to my recumbent etrike. The larger lenses interfere with other components on the trike.

@@MarkHoltze Great looking forward to it! Lol you have an engaging style to your presentation and editing so I doubt anyone would complain. I came across a comment you posted mentioning that you prefer using SIMMOD's polarizer for stills? I've invested mostly in video work so it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on why one for video vs the other for photo. This is the nicest VARIABLE filter I've come across so far. I'm afraid of losing image sharpness so I'm really excited about this one. I am having trouble deciding between the 77mm vs the 82mm + a step up ring. I considered going for the larger filter for my 77mm frame to avoid potential vignette but am unsure whether the increased distance of the filter from the lens (as a consequence of the step up ring) might downgrade a little bit of the quality by creating a bit of a haze. Any experience with this? I will be editing in post, but I am kind of new to all this, so I'm not sure if that would be an easy fix or something to avoid.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 5 лет назад
Hi Angessa. Polarizers work well for both video and photo, the thing with a Variable ND is that is is basically two polarizers working together so in a weird way you get a polarizer with the variable ND. I almost never stick a variable ND if I'm taking stills unless I need to do a day time longer exposure because I can control the light with my shutter vs video where I'm stuck to the 180 degree shutter rule. Only reason, also with video I'm more interested in telling a story vs a still where I want to control as much of the frame as possible, but that's just me. Vignetting to some degree is going to happen with a variable ND. I would go for the size where you don't have to use a step up personally. The wider the lens the more vignetting becomes apparent. For example, at 16mm on a full frame lens i'll start to get a bit of a vignette/x pattern on this VND at around the 9 mark. I rarely shoot wide, but did notice it after i completed this video. The work around for me is when shooting at wider full frame focal lengths my max ND number may shift slightly. 24mm and up there is hardly any vignetting. What kind of stuff will you mainly be shooting? Camera? PS: The 77 and 82MM are both the same price now, so that might help with your decision? Haze can be removed with contrast levels, but I still think it's best to capture the cleanest settings in camera vs trying to fix it in post. It never really looks quite right. Again just my take. Hope that helps!
@agnessas5904
@agnessas5904 5 лет назад
@@MarkHoltze Hi Mark, yes this is very helpful! I don't plan to shoot wide as often and when I do, rarely will I go below 24mm, so it looks like vignetting won't be as big of an issue as I'd thought. I'm going to go ahead with the 77mm. I'll be using it on my Canon 80D with my Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2 and Sigma 17-50 f2.8 (x1.6 crop factor = 27-80mm). :) Thanks for all your help! Thank you for this video! I'm a newbie with BMCCP 4k + Art Sigma 18-35 f/1.8. I like all the scenes I shot indoors, but not outdoors. When it's not sunny enough, the footage becomes blurry. Yesterday, I couldn't even focus on some leaves on a tree + flat footage. I guess it happened that way because my camera needs a filter. I have a silly question: My lens ring size is 72 mm, but SIMMOD filters only offer other sizes, which means they are not made for my lens?
@laurikvo
@laurikvo 6 лет назад
Found you via Matti Haapoja and I'm so lucky I did. Great content and the filter looks so good. Both in image quality-wise and by the looks of it. Love when there is more thought behind the product that actually benefits it's users. After all: mounting, twisting and using that filter should be a breeze but more often than not it isn't. I currently have cheaper VND and have all the problems you listed and haven't used it much because of that (even though I should have). So if I win I would like to get the 77mm one.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 6 лет назад
Welcome and good luck! Ya the VND is fantastic. SIMMOD is an experienced commercial DP (who also loves shooting on vintage lenses) so he designs his products from a first hand experienced user perspective. It shows for sure! Matti could have used it on his latest video on some of those sunny wides ;) Thanks for stopping by and seriously best of luck in the draw!
@laurikvo
@laurikvo 6 лет назад
Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it. That experience really shows in the product too. I have thought before many times like "Is it really that hard to design a decent VND (or basically any other filter) to just work like it should". Turns out it is... Easy and effortless use should be the standard in every filter but truth really is quite different... Would love to see more videos about good filters but it seems that not many filmmakers are into making videos about comparing them or telling what really separates them besides price so most of the good ones probably get ignored. Also I feel like the little things like mounting, unmounting and storing them is what make their use not so convenient and not as popular as it should be.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 6 лет назад
Ya it was fun to dig into it. They have no reviews so I thought it would be a good time to make one for them. Variable ND’s are weird in that they’re just two polarizer working together to deflect light so there will be a point where the image is compromised. Just glad the danger zones for this are clearly marked beyond the range. ND’s are probably a better option but a pain when working in uncontrolled environments or time is a factor. Filters are a big thing and ya more videos on them might be necessary to help justify their importance to the image (especially video). They’re not “sexy” though in comparison to lenses or camera bodies so I wonder if that’s why we don’t see more. Deep dive on filters is DP territory. I know a few tier one DP’s who would have more educated opinion on them than me. A future video idea for sure. Thanks so much Lauri

Lee Brandt No! You’d need a ND filter with several stops darker than the max setting it offers, to achieve long exposure photos when the sun is bright outside! I just got mine and was very disappointed to learn, as this is reason why I bought it. :(
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 5 лет назад
He was asking about video primarily. vND’s are more useful for videography because of the 180 degree shutter rule. It works fine for photography generally but you need super dark if you’re doing long exposures bright day at a wide aperture. You can always adjust the F stop and iso down. Variable nD’s are convenient but they aren’t perfect.

70-200 Sony is 72mm. I would get the 82mm and ya as you said, use step up rings to adapt. At least it will work for your 24-70. Not many lenses are bigger than 82mm. They're both the same price now (77 and 82mm) plus they have a new case now. It's a fantastic filter. Value is insane for the price.

Smooth and informative - I like “the ND of the world” vid thumbnail and expected you to carry the pun to the more formal title. “Spin” was a close second. Oh well, can’t expect a reviewer who gives an iNDpendant, 2ND opinion on a somewhat uNDrated topic on how the product to LND a hand and rNDr good images, too. O.K., I’ll stop and hand it to the guy with cool shades and the maple leaf on his camera strap. On to a technical question ... Are the polarizers circular or linear? (I would expect “circular”, but you never know.) I ask because linear polarizers can cause auto-focus issues for DSLRs - the split light beam of DSLRs that lands on the focus sensor is polarized. Not an issue with mirrorless, where focus sensor is on the image sensor. Your vintage SLRs w/o autofocus sensor should be OK. Answer pNDing. 77mm

Hey mate, great video. I just received mine in the mail, and I cannot figure out how the locking ring works? As far as I can tell, the only component that can be rotated is the outer ring with the lever. The scalloped mounting ring and the middle glass piece don't move at all? Any help appreciated.

I've tried adjusting them, even used a filter removal tool to see if my fingers just weren't strong enough, nothing budges. I've watched 4:15 to 4:55 a dozen times, it looks like yours rotates, but mine is either so tight I can't move it, or it's welded.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze 5 лет назад
@@MauriceKindermann It MIGHT be closed too tight, I've had that happen myself and had to pry it open with my fingers. It was totally my fault, but sounds like yours is a packaging thing. Try to use your thumb and middle finger and grip the black middle ring between the locking ring and the ring with the numbers. Hold the filter so that the front of your filter is facing the right hand side and rotate the locking ring (the inside ring) FORWARD. Based on that orientation that will loosen it. You need a firm grip, try grabbing an elastic band for some help. Let me know if that doesn't work.

@MarkHoltze 5 лет назад
Depends what you're shooting photography wise. This acts as a polarizer and an ND so if you want to do daytime long exposures at wider apertures with longer shutter speeds it's nice to have some light control. It's definitely MORE useful for video because generally speaking we have to limit the shutter speed to 2x our frame rate as well as some log profiles have higher min ISO's.
@QwietStorm
@QwietStorm 5 лет назад

@@QwietStorm Photography is one of those weird things, what works for some, doesn't work for others. Given. you're doing longer exposures I think adjusting the amount of light coming into your lens is definitely helpful. Plus this one polarizes like I said, so you can select your polarity levels first lock the filter onto the lens and go from there. You can have no ND to MAX, it's nice for long exposures at faster apertures. Might help with your street stuff as well. The price on this IMHO is VERY reasonable, but you could always sell it back to the open market if you feel you don't use it often. Your call though mate, I rarely use it for photography myself, but I don't do long exposure stuff. If I did absolutely. I use it ALL the time for my video work, it's always with me.

"default polorization??" this filter isn't polorized correct? I didn't see anything in the description on the SIMMOD site about polorization. Also, my unit doesn't allow the middle ring (one with the arrow) to spin freely from the locking ring.
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze Год назад
VND’s are two polarizers working to cancel out the light. So you can dial in the polarity you want and lock it down from there. It’s implied knowledge a VND is a polarizer but what makes this one different than others is that you can specifically dial in the default polarity. Then lock it down as demonstrated in the video. Most just screw on and that’s that. Hope that helps
@atc576
@atc576 Год назад
@@MarkHoltze well i must have an diff version because there's only 2 moving parts.. the locking ring which is lcoked solid to the inner part/lens, then the actual neutral density outer ring. I dont see how you dialed the "default polorization" then tightened the locking ring without spinning the whole unit (locking ring) right out of where you just set it. Does your locking ting spin independent of the middle ring/lens?
@MarkHoltze
@MarkHoltze Год назад
You turn it until you get the polarization you want. You can see it when the reflections go away I. Windows. Then you turn the locking ring while to tighten. It should turn independently. It’s hard to explain, but the ring that has the built out parts should turn separately. If yours doesn’t it’s just screwed onto itself. Hard to trouble shoot it via text unfortunately.

@MarkHoltze 5 лет назад
Hi Lucas, I actually didn't do any tests at 16mm wide with this filter, I just rarely shoot full wide at 16mm. It does have a bit of vignetting at 16mm around the 8-9 ND marker I noticed after I posted this review. Probably the first thing I should have done, but I'm almost never wider than 24 and when I use the 16-35 I'm mostly on a super 35mm sensor. I'll do a quick at home test tonight to confirm. The 8-9 vignetting marker was on the Canon 16-35mm F4, but I'll try it on my Sony 16-35 Zeiss F4 and get back to you. If you're shooting wide at 16 in a bright sunny day you'll probably get some near the higher ND marks. It's almost completely unavoidable with a Variable ND. This one handles vignetting way better than the Hoya I had that was more expensive. Hope that helps mate, I'll get back to you tonight with what I find on the Sony lens specifically.

I mentione the X pattern at 5:26. With my testing the X pattern didn't become apparent until after 10 (MAX). That is to say the X pattern will slightly vary depending on what focal length lens you're using it for. The wider the lens the slightly earlier it will start. It shouldn't start before 10 (it didn't with me in my extensive testing and I use this ALL the time). So if it is for you, let me know what lens it is, what focal length is is and what camera you're using. Where is the X pattern coming in on. your lens and what focal length lens are you using? The ND filter just alllws you to shoot video outside at a wider aperture which I was you the shallower depth of field. For still images where you can change the shutter speed it’s not as critical. Video you need to keep your shutter speed locked to x 2 of your frame rate so you can’t really use shutter speed as a way to control your exposure for video. I haven’t seen how the ND filter itself impacts the actual quality of the Bokeh in any direct way.

Hi Jason, you can’t because of the lever. Because it’s a variable which are two polarizers the flaring/glare impacts the men’s differently than without it.

Thanks mate. Spend a lot of time trying to find stuff that works and isn’t super overused. Music inspires the pace and tone of a cut and treat it like an integral part of the edit. You use epedemic?

@@MarkHoltze Actually I really liked epidemicsound. but i cant purchase a single track for more than $100 (India Rs.6000). I know they work hard for music, & its amazing to listen, but for using with licence, it make no sense for more than $100. so i cant purchase them, & dont earn to much. I have option only listening to them. & like to make good collection tracks. - thanks

Ya the best way to do it is subscribe to their service for commercial use. But if you just want to listen to it, than ya don’t pay a penny ;). Will post that track for you tonight mate. It’s 12 noon here in Toronto so about 8 or 9 hours from now.

I haven't seen the SLR magic to be honest, curious how it performs against this one.
