Couple of tips from 2022. Setting the video system to NTSC will allow selection of 1080p 30fps (I'm in the UK and have no problem using the video files). The other tip is for those that shoot events and want to easily separate your photos - use the 640 25fps setting and record a snippet video of yourself stating what class/group/session is next, then order them by date when viewing on your PC to easily sort into relevant folders.

my 70d produces grainy video no matter how I configure it, I have iso at either 160 or 320 sometimes auto, changed around many settings but grain & poor quality all the way, my little panasonic G7X compact produces far superior results, any known reason for this ?
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 6 лет назад
What are you shooting with it? Time of day light etc?....auto iso !never! No matter what settings you need enough light! What’s the max aperture on your Panasonic?
@RogerBaileyOnCars
@RogerBaileyOnCars 6 лет назад
thanks for replying, I think I've figured this out !! so I updated firmware but no change, then I just reset the camera and voila ! fixed, it turns out the only movie record size my 70d will play ball with is 1920 30 IPB all others mess the image up, sd card is sandisk extreme pro 95mb/s - so here's a top tip, if in doubt hit reset ! Thanks again, I've seen other people with my same problem on forums btw. My little Panasonic is amazing, I leave it on auto usually :) it goes down to f1.8 hope now my vids will improve a touch

Because the shutter still needs to move, video lets say 30 fps is just 30 still pictures in a second each individual frame still needs to be exposed the correct amount!
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 9 лет назад
if you are shooting in any environment thats not sunlight and you put it too high you will start to see banding on the screen because most lights actually flash really fast (too fast for the human eye) but slow enough for the camera to catch!

I just got my Canon 70D two days ago. When I first the auto focusing work perfectly but I am not sure what happen today. I can't get it to do the auto forcing again. Do you know how to fix it? for example, If the camera focus on my face then I put an item in front of me, then camera will focus on the item in front of me. when I put the item down, the camera will focus back on my face by itself. For some reasons, it won't do that any more. are there any setting I need to adjust it?

+Kawaii Kate check that you have your lens switched to autofocus not manual and if that's on go to your auto focus set to face track hope that helps

Hi. I tried to video a school play yesterday and ran into a couple of problems; I want to have another go. Firstly, the video was broken up into 6 min chunks. I assume this means it's better to video for this purpose in IPB rather than ALL-1? Secondly, I can't change the shutter speed to 50 - it jumps from 45 - 60. Would it be ok at 60? Thirdly, and this is more of a processing question, how would you suggest reducing the file size once the video is finished as they are huge - 45MB - about an hour's recording. I am more stills than video as you'll see! Your tutorial is great - thanks for any help you can give.
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 9 лет назад
60 should be fine but if you check in your settings menu you should be able to change the increments in which you can change shutter speed. I have never shot in IBP but I would imagine being more compressed it makes smaller files although if you shoot more than a 4GB video file it will still split it into smaller files! And when you say it was 45MB for an hours video are you sure it's MB because that's very small for an hours video! Let me know and I hop this helps!

Your audio is not peaking. You'rw good on the yellow area as far as you don't hit the 0. The problem is if you go too far up, you may not have enough margin if somebody suddenly raises their voice. But for normal speech you could have easily set up your volume 6 to 9db higher. If you never hit the yellow, your signal to noise ratio is being compromised. Thanks for the video.

Should I upgrade from a t2i (550) to a 70D? I mainly do video (short films, web series and probably events) and photography (street and looking to make some wedding and event photography) or should I invest in lenses? THANKS!
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 9 лет назад
tattotoro It all depends on whether you think the auto focus would really enhance your workflow/quality if you are happy to continue manually focussing in video mode then i would say stick with the t2i and invest in Glass (lenses) but if you really want the continuous video autofocus (bare in mind only certain lenses are silent) then the 70D is a good option although there are other canon options now which have the same autofocus capabilities! i hope this helps!

Quick tip: If you shoot in slow motion and you're shooting at a higher FPS, do not double the FPS for you Shutter Speed. For example, if you're shooting at 60fps, you would naturally change the shutter speed to 1/125th second (there is no 1/120 on Canon cameras); however, because one would not want to experience choppiness during video editing, increase that shutter speed to 1/250th or even 1/500th of a second (depending on lighting and the amount of flow needed for video). Hope that helps :)
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 9 лет назад
Thanks for adding this tip....with the 70D at 1080p the best frame rate your getting is 30fps so your not likely to shoot slow mo unless you change to 720p

Great video, quick question, why do people usually set the ISO to 800? I’m from a photography background so I’d automatically set the ISO to 100 and light the scene? Thanks
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 4 года назад
The iso depends on the camera and picture profile for a HDR profile on my new Sony 125 is the lowest but if i shoot LOG 800 is the minimum iso i can use for that so I'm guessing for most its the lowest in their specific camera style, if people want a best settings for the Sony a7III please let me know by hitting the like button

I just took a look at my camera and tried to re create what your saying shutter speeds on cameras go in 10's from 30-80 in video mode on the 70D so I can't see how you have got a 1/45 shutter speed just double check your reading shutter speed and not aperture which could read 4.5 let me know it this helps

What settings would you use to shoot a big night-time stage show with lights that are continually changing and a lot of dancers and things? I am hesitant to use manual because the lighting and movement doesn't stay the same.
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 9 лет назад
***** I would say use manual mode With a slightly closed down aperture for more depth of field (more of the stage in focus) nd put your ISO into auto so that it can automatically adjust to the lights but you still have control over aperture and shutter speed! it might also be worth going in to your camera menu and capping your ISO limit too 1600/3200 to save yourself the hassle of overly noisy video!

Why is ISO 800 the standard? Seems high. ISO creates artificial light so shouldn't this number be as low as possible while still maintaining adequate light? So wouldn't you want ISO 100 on bright sunny day?

What I meant by this is try not to go over 800iso I read recently that your best base ISO is actually 160 even over 100

george thank you so much. now, i have a question for you...what is the best lense for me to use outside shoot for my indie film project. i am using canon 70d with EFS 18-55mm. everytime i use this lense and set my manual into 24 or 30fps the result of my footage are not so clean and kind of blurry. is it because of my lense? thanks george again you are so talented.
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 9 лет назад
Are you using manual focus?...is your lens clean? It could be that your missing focus or have a smudged lens. It could also be your sharpness level on your picture profile try raising it!
@gilbertyuga
@gilbertyuga 9 лет назад
+George Slade wow! you reply my question. THANKS A LOT GEORGE!!!! YOU"RE VERY NICE!!! one more question...regarding white balance...should I use white sheet of bond paper or anything white color and use this all the time during cut to cut filming in the same site or just once?
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 9 лет назад
+Gilbert Llantino Anything white will do i have a pure white cloth i use you can buy things like amzn.to/1QtUAWO and you only need to set white balance in different lighting situations.... So every time a light changes or you move spots if there are multiple scenes shot in the same lighting you should be ok! if your struggling with white balance the auto usually does an ok job! and your welcome are sure you share my videos with you friends and consider becoming a patron if you enjoy them that much! www.patreon.com/georgeslade?ty=h

Hi! :) You mentioned in this vid you were going to do a video specifically to touch base on af modes. Did you ever do it? :) I clearly understood your explanation about focusing, but I wonder, if I need to follow someone walking, or shoot a scene that requires more movement of the subject, what should I do? touching the screen in the middle of the movement will make everything messy and not fluid! hehe. Any tips? Thanks! (i found one of your vids named "Fast Autofocus for DSLR Video" but it's for things that don't move much. Thanks for your lovely vids, they are SO SO useful!!! :)
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 9 лет назад
Hi thanks for the nice comment...I haven't done that video yet it is still in the pipeline....how you shoot that depends on the type of movement really....for example if your shooting wide and they are moving from left to right in your shot you could use the face tracker mode as they enter shot touch them anywhere and it should do a good job tracking them...if you have the camera moving aswell, it may even be worth manual focusing a focus puller helps with this but they can be expensive once the video is finished I will upload it straight away!

what I am hoping Canon would come up with is a firmware update for my 70D that would keep it from dying if I record a lot of videos with it, a misfortune that has happened to a lot of users already as can be read and seen about in the Canon forums, in youtube, even in facebook. I chose to buy this model because of its awesome video capabilities (AF in video ) but now I am afraid to use it for video. what a c__p!

I don't have my camera with me atm to tell you exactly where to go but do a quick search on youtube/google and you should find details on where to find it!

The Canon EOS 70D has a very large defaults, when it is used in video mode for sequenses a little long it boils then the internal electro card is off, it displays error 80, it costs close to 300 euro to repair it, c Is a very frequent failure and the major of those who opted for the Canon EOS 70D have had this problem, think 1000 times before buying one and learn about the forums

@GeorgeSlade1

@LunaMysteriax 9 лет назад
George Slade Oops sorry for the lack of details. I am trying to do self portraits for beauty/hair related photography. I have both the kit lens and the 55-250mm stm lens.
@GeorgeSlade1
@GeorgeSlade1 9 лет назад
ThisOwl Ok well if you are having problem with motion blur set you camera in either sutter priority TV or manual, make sure you shutter speed is above 1/250th and set you aperture and iso accordingly to correctly expose the image, set your focus with whichever lens to face recognition using "live view" and make sure your timer gives you enough time to get in frame! hope that helps let me know!

Why is ISO 800 standard?
@matthewmosley7275
@matthewmosley7275 8 лет назад
Don't listen to him, 800 ISO is way to high!!! Your image will look super noisy... A rule of thumb, is to never really go over 400 ISO, try to stay at either at 100 or 200 ISO

To try and get all the words out in the right order before I mess a sentence up (honestly), Sorry for the speed I will take that into consideration in the future. Feel free to watching it and keep pausing to find out what you need!
