Gear is an important part of videography and filmmaking but knowing what to buy and when to buy it is the key.
You don't want to be buying gear for the sake of buying it without mastering other aspects that could be very pivotal to your creation. Almost everyone is capped by some form of their personal budget and we must spend our money wisely and this is what I would do.
Hopefully this video will help you think more about the importance of prioritising certain aspects of filmmaking.

Buy a camera, I don’t care which. Start shooting, but more importantly, start learning. What’s between your ears is the most important piece of kit you will ever have. Learn how to read the light. Zoom, prime, crop sensor, full frame, none of this will make up for lack of knowledge. A beginner with a Red is still just that, a beginner.

one thing that i will add on, after u've purchased everything else... buy dumbells (or weights) and work out. You could do a typical 3 sets of 20 push-ups + 50 sit ups but dumbells will help out a lot more. Getting as "jacked" as u can within your time allowance helps out with actually shooting (stable camerawork for example) when u're running and gunning or climbing that mountain for a docu with your gear. Go for strength and not bulk.

If you get the FX30 or the A6700 then I recommend the Sony 15mm f1.4 and the Sigma 56mm f1.4 for portraits or the Sigma 30mm f1.4 as a general purpose lens.

I have that Sigma 30mm 1.4 (and the 16mm 1.4). They're great, but they're horrible for pulling focus. Pair them with two manual (vintage) character lenses and you're ready for many kinds of shoots.

00:00 📹 The video discusses essential steps for beginners in filmmaking and videography. 02:05 💡 Start with just one camera, focusing on its capabilities rather than constantly upgrading. 03:00 📸 Begin with two lenses, preferably prime lenses, to cover a wide range of shots effectively. 04:35 💡 Mastering lighting is crucial, with two lights being sufficient for most setups. 05:52 🌞 Utilize diffusers and bounce boards to control and manipulate light effectively. 06:58 🎙 Invest in good audio equipment, including a quality recorder and appropriate microphones. 09:45 🎥 Consider having a second camera (B camera) for backup and versatility in shooting setups. 11:14 🎬 Explore investing in anamorphic or vintage lenses for creative and stylistic choices in filmmaking. 12:43 💡 Invest in additional lighting equipment like LED tubes and different modifiers for versatility. 14:16 🛠 Purchase camera accessories such as matte boxes, monitors, and batteries to enhance workflow. 15:53 💻 Create a conducive working environment with a powerful workstation and comfortable workspace for improved productivity.

Ima just pop in here and say, 3 lights baby. 2 lights is the minimum, but 3 opens up all kinds of possibilities for subject separation and making sure your contrast ratios are bangin’. 300+ for key, and two 60 or 100ish lights for background and hair light. 2 lights will be good enough in most scenarios (sometimes even 1 light). But when you NEED that third light, you will be so thankful you have it as it can make a world of difference when you can’t select your own shoot locations.

What about cine lenses and sony e-mount? It looks like it's necessary to employ PL-mount to E-mount adapter. And it introduces new costs higher than lenses itself (about 3-4k). Otherwise it's possible to use passive adapter without contacts. Finally, AF and iris control won't work (if there is one in cine lenses). Then, focus pulling motor + focus puller is necessary :) Or maybe there is an easier way to use cine lenses?

Here is my list: Sound Devices Mixpre 3 II + a nice Boompole and something like an Oktava MK-012 and a pair of DPA 4060 Lavs California Sunbounce Pro (silver/white/black) Aputure 600 Daylight LED A big Parabolic Umbrella 3 C-Stands An heavy old tripod with a fluid head And then any camera (preferably a Sony ZV-E1 if you are on a budget) and a bag full of Minolta MC and MD glass That kit should cover basic filmmaking without sacrificing upgradability.

well i have the fx30 i upgraded from a gh5 and thats the sweet spot for my.... my favorated focal lenses are 35 mm and some focal lengths with a higher compression 75 or 85. for statement shots 14mm and higher... i am searching outdoor lighting and indoor. what lighting what is good for outside shooting with a battery and lantarn softbox and some practicals or lamps for the background.... what watt is good against sun light. with a small footprint or do they dont exist. like the 200w colbor 220r light. thats a nice size to take with my. not to big but is 200w to less... against the sun. i wait for the anamorphic lenses... to expansive at the moment
@JasonMorrisphotocinema
@JasonMorrisphotocinema 4 месяца назад
against the sun you're looking at 600W or higher to really start competing. And this is also paired with a fesnel to get extra direction. otherwise your best bet is work with the sun, diffuse the talent and then bounce light

Oeffff 600w oeffff that are big lights to bring with my. Gvm 650 pro is the only one at the moment... how is in my budget. But diffusion and bouncing is also a good idea. Way cheaper to start with. But still I think I need 1 cob 200w light and 2 2feet tube light to start with. For the evening shots. Lantarn with certains is what I need for great top lighting.

Its not really gear, but my pro tip would be, invest in full version of your editing software. Davinci or Adobe doesn't matter, but you will get so much more out of your shots. This can somewhat compensate for the vintage lenses and other missing gear. When you are tight on a budget but have some time to spend, you actually can get the look you want without spending too much in gear. Also, depending where you live, you should not invest in very expensive gear, specially lights and lenses. They are not ment to be bought by single persons really. Renting them can be so much cheaper and you can try out new things, but work with serious gear. And lastly, sign up for film university, usually they have really high quality gear you can use for free, learn so much about the craft and connect with other creatives. Even if you have to pay for, the ROI may be phenomenal :)
@JasonMorrisphotocinema
@JasonMorrisphotocinema 4 месяца назад
I completely disagree about University. I absolutely loved studying at University and got my film degree but I would not recommend it to everyone. My film school is one of the top academic locations in Australia but it is highly catered to the Film & TV industry. Learning specialty topics have been my own personal development outside tertiary study and actual hands on learning. I do agree that upskilling yourself is very crucial and actually getting out and filming is something I recommend all the time. I also must disagree on not buying lights. All someone needs is one really good key light and this will last years and the return on that investment is incredible. You do not need to try other lights. A really good COB light that has bowens mount is enough to use in almost any situation. This is why I said invest in extra lights down the track.
@simon_sky
@simon_sky 4 месяца назад
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thank you for your reply and opinion to my comment. Sad to hear that your university was not engaging creativity and own productions. So this may vary a lot across countries and schools! Still, I don't think buying any gear is an absolute necessity. Really depends on what you want to do. Sure, a good cob light is great, but what if you mainly work outside without power supply? I agree that it is crucial to experiment with equipment and gear, but I feel that too often on YT gear gets linked to success and development. In my opinion that is not true, and someone who can barely afford all of that, will be better off actually realising projects, than overthinking how buy this light, oh yeah that tripod, I need this and that. Maybe it's a bubble here in Germany, but for less than 100 bucks you can rent some serious gear. A Sachtler tripod costs 4€ to rent. It is just my own experience, and clearly depends on who this video is for. Maybe I got it wrong and it's much more about videographers that want to start their business as content creator (: BTW: in my comment I meant "very expensive gear", so this maybe was misleading. Very expensive for me is Cooke or Arri lenses, Arri Daylight etc. Sure to get some Amaran or Smallrig lights, there is nothing wrong about that. But nowadays RU-vidrs wave around with ridiculously expensive gear claiming "this changed everything". Not saying you are doing it! Hope you keep your way :)

Why advise to only buy Sony? I get the FX30 as a starting point, but surely if the viewer can't afford an FX30, you'd maybe advise them to go Blackmagic given the overall superior image quality - but the A6400???? Sony is really not that desirable for video at that price point.

Because I only deal with the Sony ecosystem. You can buy any brand you want, it does not phase me.
