This is my go to to clean crystals with calcite over growth that is not enhancing the crystal. all you need is muriatic acid, and plastic bucket or tub and water.
For Iron oxidation and build up I use Iron out and soak the crystals for a day or 2 at room temperature. do not let the iron out solution get too cold with the crystals it will turn the iron black.

Might be smart to transfer overflow into another bucket and soak more crystals in it. Then in the end, neutralize the acid completely with waste calcite, or at least baking soda befor pouring it into the environment. Just saying.
@Jacquestherock...houndrookie
Just an FYI...you should let people know to add concentrated acid to water not water to acid.

Awesome 👏🏻 I watched a gal the other day and she was using the blue Lysol cling toilet cleaner. She was so precautions. And I was like I don’t even use gloves when I use it to clean. I prefer your information. Cause it’s clear you know your stuff. Anyhow I can back you on being careful. You may cringe but I was found and not very bright. We had my uncle build our home. He put Satillo tile down but didn’t finish it. Because he wasn’t charging us for a custom home. So he told me what to do before finishing the tiles. And it involved Muretic acid. It was not ventilated I didn’t even have the door open. Needless to say it did cause me to have a bloody nose and dizzy. So please everyone be careful. I also didn’t use gloves. No it didn’t burn my hands but they were very dried out. Thank you for posting this video.

I've found some crazy cool rocks in lake Havasu, lots of chalcedony, agate, huge chunks of jasper, and this marble looking swirly rock that kinda looks like jawbreaker it is orange/pink/ white swirl. I love watching your videos Elle, I've learned alot from them😊

@@nancygaxiola5412 if you are on the end of town that Walmart is on, and craggy wash would be on your right hand side as you go out of town like you are headed towards The Bunker Bar, up the hill/ highway on your left is a guardrail with a entrance, it is a little hard to find but it's the first driveway after craggy wash on your left and it is blm land, that blm land has chalcedony, red jasper, and agate all over the place. I searched at craggy wash and I didn't find anything. It's super weird that just a mile away has all that other stuff lol, I found a little bit of chalcedony at Sarah's crack as well but it's such a big park I didn't have much time to look. Good luck I hope this helps!!!

Always acid in water , and not the contrary; the reaction could throw acid outise of the bucket

Where's your backing soda to stop tbe acid from hurting your crystals ? You didnt neutralize it?? That's probably why they fail off and you l9st some .. water doesn't stop acid activity

thank you for showing this i was wandering, now i have another question, why do we break the geodes apart if hydrocloric acid does that job ? just to check if there are crystals formed in the geode? or is there another reason for it?

So what is it that i keep doing wrong that is making my geodes seem to still have a layer on crud after acid baths? Maybe i leave in too long? I do rinse really well i know that. Uggg But this video both triggered me and made me giggle. Triggered because even at 10 15pm im about to head out back and wash more rocks and the giggle because you aare literally the only person i have ever watched handle the jug of acid exactly like me! I mean from start to rinse was like watching myself. No gloves nothing but my hose and multiple plastic buckets and landscape rocks to dump on. Oh and the super duper excited narraration as well!!!! Too awsome!

Hello there. I found this gray rock that has quartz like bits to it. It feels heavier than it should. I think it may be a big quartz with a layer of gray crud on it. I put it in vinegar and it bubbles. Is there anything else I can do to get rid of the gray crud?

What are the crystals you are cleaning? If they are calcite, why aren't they dissolving with the acid? I'm wondering what rocks I should and shouldn't use this method with :)

And/or caves. Read the story about out how Kartchner Caverns was found. That is a heck of a story. Also walking around in a hilly part of a mountain close to the same area, I bent down to pick up a rock and there was air coming up from out of the ground from just a small hole. I went home and looked on my topo maps and found out it was owned by someone, a mining claim. Never looked into it any further though...also up there were fossils....I don't know fossils well but they were there! A round metal plate that it had been excavated (or I don't really know what they called it), by the USGS. Lots of cool stuff up in those mountains...we call it Crystal Mountain because there are a lot of quartz crystals all around that one side of the mountain. Unfortunately my body is in no condition to climb up that mountain anymore. Lots of stuff up there to find though. I saw what I'm pretty sure was blue lace agate in the ground that I could not dig out though.

Wow! Interesting info, but I doubt I'll ever be in those areas of the West again. My parents & I did 2 cross-country auto trips, back-to-back years after my dad retired from teaching. One year we followed parts of the Oregon Trail, from WY to OR stopping in different locations & deviating at times from the trail. Picked up random stones, anything that had color or patterns I could see, in various stops along our way.

I've used a similar technique to clean up some beautifully banded calcite. If you are ever interested, there is a place on BLM land that contains some incredible banded calcite. I'd be happy to share the location!

Thanks for your video on cleaning the calcium crystals and ? crystals. Never having taken Chemistey in either high school or college, videos on cleaning minerals is especially important for me. I have used Iron Out in the latter 1990's for cleaning Herkimer diamonds some of which were in vugs of dolomite and had small calcite crystals also on the dolomite. Not knowing how long to soak the rock/crystals, I probably left dolomite in the acid too long as the rocks' surface changed from smoothish to really rough. Wearing long rubberized gloves, removed dolomite from acid soak to another bucket with baking soda/water mix to remove acid, and finally a plain water soak. Several years later, when I was on Facebook on a Great Lakes Superior Agates site, learned about using CLR for cleaning LSA. Have also used this method for cleaning agates and other semi-precious stones.

I've got a real nice plate that I dug up in Arkansas. Unfortunately it's loaded with sandstone. You can see the crystals through holes in the sandstone, but I'm not sure how to get rid of it.

I’d rather go the natural route and just use water. Anything outside of H2O is compromising the quality and properties of the crystals.
