I’ve been soaking found wood since October (2 1/2 months about) but I change water every 2 weeks with the first wash getting a tiny splash of bleach to sanitize but so that it will be cleaned away before being close fish. It hasn’t failed me yet but I’ve never tried boiling in the 2 years I’ve been using wood I find outdoors because this works for me
The way I did it for my big peices of wood for my 180 and 300 is go to theisens and get one of the big steel bucket feeders they sell.. They are roughly 23-25" around in a square shape, and use a turkey fryer burner to boil the bigger pieces! Works perfectly for these bigger pieces and much quicker than just letting them soak in water. Some of my bigger pieces would have taken a month+ to get water logged just soaking like this.
Use some activated carbon in you're tank after adding new driftwood, it helps to get rid of any remaining tannins, and remove/replace them during filter changes! 🙂🐟🐠
I found a large piece of driftwood on the beach and want to prepare it for my freshwater tank! But I’m extremely nervous to cause stress or harm, so you have any advice on “wild” ocean drift wood?
@@bellagrace3498 hopefully your fishies get better. I like animals and i know some people are like me and see fish no less than a puppy. Hopefully my log i bought at goodwill was used in a fishtank before, because it definitely looks like it. Imma take every precaution i can though. But yea good luck to you and your fishies 🐟
I found some nice wood when I was camping, I want to put it in my aquarium but the wood is 48 inches long so I cant boil it. Is there any other way I can clean the wood to make sure all the parasites are dead? I've been soaking the wood in the tub for a week now with a couple water changes and I've been using the hottest water setting temperature for the tub. Thanks
phil peterson You can you janitor grade bleach or chlorine tabs (like you use in a hot tub or pool). Then let it sit out for a few days... In my honest opinion, I just wouldn’t use it. You have NO IDEA what’s inside that wood
I boil crazy amounts of water and fill up a tub just dumping the boiling water onto the wood but this is the last steps for me I let it soak in cold water for a week and now Ive soaked it in boiling water and changed it three times
TEFANET OE Should be ok - Most store bought wood is pretreated for any fungal/bacterial antibodies or parasites. This preparation is moreso for removing the tannins and soaking the wood so it won’t float. If you want to take the next step, follow the instructions in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ryfzAqXcPqQ.html I used it on rocks but it can be applicable to wood.
I do the same thing except I add salt to the water as a disinfectant. I put a pretty good amount in and stir it from time to time. Rinse wood before adding to tank. Good video. 😃
I have boiled my driftwood several times and it's still turning the water brown. It's much lighter than in the beginning but I'm hesitant to put it in the tank as I don't want it to turn my water brown. How do I know when it's safe to add it to the tank?
Did your driftwood ever got smelly? Do you know how to get rid of it? Mine is in a big plastic box for like 2 months, still doesn't sink, but my bathroom smells like sewage from it...
I unfortunately did not clean my wood I rinsed it and put it inside my tank now the wood made my whole tank Yellow 😩. Is it bad for my turtles? Should I change the water out? This wood is safe for tanks bought it at a serpentarium store.
You should be fine, just monitor your pH levels. Normal water changes over time will help bring the tannins level down and naturally go away in 6 months to maybe 2 years!
i soak woods for a 1-2 weeks and most tanins goes away..although some woods leach tanins way longer..but if you use seachem purigen you can getrid of the excess tanins too
@@spiraleena9237 my solution is wash it clean and leave it in the sun or in water for a few days. It should kill it all off. Theres just no way to boil large pieces. Unless you somehow own a witch cauldron....
Hey there I know this is a relatively old video but I’m kinda new to the hobby and just bought some wood from my local pet shop , I’ve boiled it as much as I can and the deep tannin colour is gone , I’m assuming it’s been baked prior to buying and I’ve been soaking it for about 3 hours but the colour has gone is it safe to add to my aquarium now or do I still need to let it soak ?
It should be safe after you boiled it. Tannin isn't actually dangerous for your fish tank. Really depends on if you like the colour that it gives to your tank.
Winona Howard Tannins are actually pretty healthy for fish and aquatic animals, after all they are natural! Now tannins and driftwood a can lower pH, which could kill any animal. Test the pH and you’ll have your answer!
My petco driftwood is going into two weeks now in the water container and still makes the water brown. I dont think itl ever be ready for my fish tank😢
I did not know to do this, I already glued some plants to it, so I don't want to pull it out and boil it. I just did a few water changed to lighten the water color, I'm fine with some tannin. Any big problems other than possible pH? I rinsed them for a while like the rocks
Probably won’t get a response but I’ve had my wood submerged in a bucket for almost a week it’s not a very big piece but still floating it’s frustrating!
REALLY controversial opion, but if you have a really large tank (150+) you really dont have to purify it, just wash it clwan and leave it for a few weeks to let microorganisms die out. Thats what I have always done. Another factor is if it is small fish, dont so this with those cause they are sensitive, but it wont hurt large hardy fish. Same with rocks, as long as the rock is a nice kind with no bad minerals, just wash it clean and leave it in the sun for a few days. Again THIS ONLY APPLIES TO WOOD THAT LEAKS NO TANNINS AND SAFE ROCKS.
I got some cool pieces from a saltwater beach but I have a red ear slider in a 75 gallon fresh water tank (obvi) and they too big too boil. Will this method work? Any tips?
A piece from outdoors vs a piece purchased in a store, which has already been treated is veryyyy different. For a piece like that you have to watch out for the level of salt that leeched into the wood as well as some other bad things that may be in the wood. I would steer clear.
I have a fair sized piece of aquarium wood that had been used as the base for a large rack of antlers. It has been soaking for over a week and I change the water every day. It still floats so I put a weight on it. I even have drilled a number of holes with a 9/16" bit. which will be a good hiding spot for the shrimp I wish to get Is there anything else I can do or should I just be patient?
Did you ever get it to sink? Lol I have a large piece of wood I cant keep it from floating even after using a large rock to keep it pushed down, once I pick the rock off it always floats back up!
@@kaitlinwaitlin8554 I used Gorilla Glue Gel to stick several stones to the base of my piece of wood and that kept it down. Eventually it will become waterlogged and stay down for good. This should work for you.
Hello, i got a big piece of driftwood in the woods near a lake.. I bought it home yesterday, i washed it with extreme high pressure water, theres no mud on it, its perfectly clean.. But its too big to boil it in a recipient, Is there any ideas how to make it safe befire adding to my tank
I would recommend not using it. Wood like that is usually infected with parasites, fungus, or bacteria. No matter how well you clean it, it will probably still carry something.
I let my mopani wood sit for two days changing the water in between and still got brownish/orange color but I think it’s because we have a heater so it’s kind of like infusing tea 😢
It could happen for months actually! Most of the tannins will come out in the first 1-2 weeks though. After that, you should be good. It’s not terrible to have tannins in the water, it’s actually good for the fish!
I lillerly don't even know anymore Over time the amount of tannins will lessen and ultimately stop. This can take 2 months, it could also take 1 year depending on the type and size and density of the wood.
IT would be nice to see the update on how did it go after you placed that driftwood? did you buy this from pet store and wash it for 48hrs or is this an actual wood from outside in nature ? I want to add driftwood in my 10galon goldfish , they are doing just fine without anything in the gallon but water and get feed everyday ........ But i m concerns that if i add driftwood buying from which store is safer ?? and would it actually drop ph if so how can i prevent it and whether if i add natural plant would balance the ph I lost 4 of them in 3 days thanks to petsmart to selling sick fish
I bought some driftwood from Petsmart and even after weeks of pre-soaking it sill turns the water tea colored. They definitely don't do any kind of treatment to their wood before selling it.
@@LongIslandFishGuy I used a fishing line to tie it to a rock and it's still hovering for more than a week now lol. I don't know what type of wood, I just bought it from the aquarium store.
So when soaking your driftwood in tapwater, is it normal for a foul smell to be present after 4-6 days? I soaked it in a bleach solution for 4 days prior to using normal tapwater to steralize the wood..
I'm confused. I saw where you told someone on here that you wouldn't used driftwood they found at the beach even if they soak it. But the video says to just soak your driftwood a few days and its good to go? Maybe I missed something. I have some years old driftwood I've been saving but I don't know what I need to do with it now. Do I have to bleach it or no bleach or should I scrap the whole idea altogether?
Most store bought woods are baked or already treated to some degree. If you walk on a beach and bring home a piece of wood for your aquarium, chances are that that wood is loaded with bad bacteria. For something like that, you need to either boil it, use a bleach solution, or something! Just soaking it won’t do it.
You can boil wood in a metal garbage can by putting it on cinder blocks and building a fire under it. That is if you have a place to do it. I've soaked some wood like mopani in a tote for up to a year. I change the water once a month.
Ralph Bonifacio It really depends on the size and density of the wood. Gotta get that deep brown color. This video would be better for you if you want to boil it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t2t7GzWXVRE.html
Man, I've been soaking a Malaysian driftwood for about a month and the water is still turning brown. Yes, I've been changing the water every now and then. What should I do?
Help!! Still waiting to hear back on the Malaysian driftwood I soaked for 2 wks. It still turns my aquarium water black coffee BLACK. HELP ME PLEASE!!!
I found myself having this problem when I got the big pieces of wood that I put in my 29 gallon a while back. I ended up water logging it in the aquarium, which was a mistake. It killed some of my fish and the water was cloudy for weeks.
I spent $100 for a Malaysian driftwood. I soaked completely, rinsed, soaked some more on & on for over 2 weeks escalating my water bill. Tannins were still leaching so I gave up. A few months went by & I thought I would just set up my new tank & hope for the best. I put some cleaned black sand in, a few Val grass plants & some new rinsed off plastic plants. The water turned a bit dark. I have the hob running full speed with lots of floss that I change daily. 4 days later it looks like black coffee. I spoke to the pet store & was told to boil it for 8 hours... WTF!! Can you please help. No way can I boil something that large.
Water changes will help clear up the water. The initial release of tannins is always the worst but after 1-3 months with weekly water changes it’ll get better and better. The tank will only get cleared of tannins after maybe 1-2 years, but it’ll be much less after the initial 3-6 months. Tannins actually are beneficial for your fish, so don’t worry! Just monitor your pH!
I did boiled too to mske it litle bit quick. May i suggest for pick old aged wood if you can, or may be wood that already dead for long time n got heat from sun also better less tanin
I bought driftwood from a fish store and I put it in a tank with fish in it already. Next morning I wake up to dark water with the whole gang floating...was it the wood?
Yanji Jay Whelp, that’s a very good reason as to why it’s like that! I’d 100% remove it from your aquarium because it’s also probably harming your fish.
