Best Way To Turn BLACK Into ANY COLOR in Photoshop [Including White!]

Learn a unique, easy-to-use, and powerful method to black into any color that you want (including white!) in Photoshop.
The challenge with changing black into any other colors is that you need a lot of control over the brightness and contrast.
Most techniques use a single Hue and Saturation Adjustment Layer to create the color swap, which can get you good results with dark colors. But if you want to make black into a light color,
then you will wash out the image when you adjust the brightness.
In this tutorial, I am going to show you how you can use
two layers, one that controls Hue and saturation, and another that controls brightness and contrast to turn black into any color in Photoshop, including white!
I think that this method gives you the most control,
and most importantly the best results!

I watched 3 other videos on changing Black to any colour. They were all - do this, then do this, then do this. The result for their particular example image was not bad but not great either. Your video also said to do this and then do that but, the difference was that you explained why to do it and what how we can have control over most any image. What a difference that made !! Thanks Jesus.

Coming back to this as it's been a while since I did this and my brain was struggling to remember what to do with a photo that still had dark areas. This video is the best method I've ever seen and you explain everything so clearly. You really are an excellent teacher and I'm so grateful for your channel.

I see a lot of people using a adjustment layer to change a color and that is very bad, this method is better you can see color running to the dark bits. Anyhow I still think changing channels with channelmixer is the way to do it and if you cannot reach the color by that calculate the channels you think you need to get it in the ballpark with a selective color on top to pinpoint the right color. In this way understanding color how it works will get to your brain and that's the problem these days with photographers
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel 4 года назад
That method works as well! Thanks for sharing. Also, using a gradient map would work. As long as you can control brightness and contrast separately you should get good results.

I have been using this method for some years now but with a curves layer instead of a levels layer. I find that you get less pixelations and ugly smearing in the shadows by using a curves layer, especially when you're not using a high quality stock image. I also use 3 layers instead of 2. The bottom layer would be a black and white layer to get rid of any existing color before changing it. In addition to that i might use extra color layers in combination with blendif to change color tones in either the highlights or shadows. Also, you're breathtaking.
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel
@PhotoshopTrainingChannel 4 года назад
Thanks for sharing, Spuddy L! Yeah, curves would get you better results. Levels is just easier for beginners to understand. Also running the noise reducer in the camera raw filter can help in some cases.

I knew how to change colors, but I only did it on things like walls and such as I learned I would quickly lose the the texture, I never thought of doing it this way at all. The retention of the fabric folds and crinkles is a game saver.

Cool thing. Is working fine, but do you also have an advice how to change restshadows? The problem is that the blue then mixes with the shade of the other shirt or with the skin tone of the other person at the edge, i.e. in the shadow area. How can I adjust the shadow?

Thanks so much! I'm pretty comfortable with layer masks and adjustment layers, but was never able to get my dark colors to light colors or vice versa. I did find that with my jet black, pitch black, etc... (leather texture), even though it had plenty of creases in it , it required one more step. I lowered the opacity down to 50% and voila! ... a perfectly purple leather texture, with none of the texture diminished.
