BEST Way Use a Binder Clip as a Wallet for Cards AND Cash

I've seen far too many people say how great binder clips are as DIY wallets, only to offer no actual system or technique for using your cards and cash at the register to do normal stuff that you have to do with a wallet. So I sat down and played with a binder clip, cash, and cards until I found the best system I could for paying with cash and cards with minimal frustration. I've been using this setup for more than a year now and I'm very happy with it!

For people wanting to minimize, this is perfect. I’m often amazed at the dollar amount people spend for something to hold their cards and cash. I’ve used a rubber band for years but this is far better I think.

Take 2 old ,used shopping cards and tape each with aluminum foil and cover with duct tape. Make them the top and bottom cards of your stack . And you have added RFID skimming protection.

Seriously bada$$. I just started using a binder clip last week and I thought to myself "someone has put some time and effort into thinking this through logically and optimally." Best thing about the internet, I can instantly piggyback on someone's cleverness.

The problem of cards and currency was basically the last thing in my daily life that was a persistent annoyance. With this video you have allowed me to be one step closer to modern Nirvana. Thanks! Great system. side bonus is that the cash money covers your credit card number. My two most used cards are credit (almost nobody asks for my ID) and my Metro TAP card (which works best if it's on the outside). but I always feel a bit weird having my CC so visible (I used to use rubber bands). I do dislike having my bills visible but the convenience is worth it.

@Bentechnology Hey just wanted to say that I saw this video well over three years ago, stole a binder clip from work and have used this wallet ever since and loved it every day. Two years ago I received a very nice "minimalist" front pocket wallet for Christmas and it was literally the same size empty as my binder clip wallet with a greedy amount of cards in it. Just wanted to say thanks 👍

cool. I tried this idea out today, and already I can tell that it would be easy to misplace or even have it all fall out of my pocket. Someone else online had the idea to attach the clip to one of those retractable key ring things on a string. I did notice that when in a hurried line with lots of people behind me, I felt really fumbly trying to undo the clip and deal with putting change back in quickly. I figure over time that would be easier- it's just new compared to what i'm used to doing. One speed adaptation I'm trying is that I took pliers and bent the tips of the wire flaps out a little, so that placing my palm on the flat butt end of the clip, I can reach across and easily grip and pull back both wire ends at the same time. thought you might find that handy- it's easier than digging in under each end with your fingernail trying to pull it back, if that makes sense. Also, there is a faster way to put change in it. you don't have to take all the bills out and stack them all back up. You can just slide the end of the change bills under the open flap of what's already there, wrap them around the outside, and refasten the clip. I love that with the big clip i'm using, I can set the whole thing upright on it's in and it stays vertical. I just think that's really cool.

I use a card holder ( I use credit cards for everything, casback, points, purchase protection, dispute charges, etc etc) and I keep a money clip with 1$ 2$ and 5$ bills for tip money, I like keeping them separate so my valuables are a little more spread out

This is so good! 🙂I've been wanting to replace my ridiculously bulky wallet awhile. Especially as I get more interested in ultralight backpacking. But also with wanting my purse as light as possible. Its really annoying to me to feel loaded down by or posture effected by overly heavy or bulky purse or wallet yet I also like being prepared. So I find the ultralight backpacker mentality of thoughtful minimalism that considers every ounce takes research and planning but is worth it to feel prepared and light.🌿This video is super smart. My only issue is it is not waterprooof and no section for coins. I like all the money to be together and ready as one single unit to go in a purse, bag, or safely deep (zipper ideal) pocket. Waterproof is important to me too. 🌿Lamination on cards is plenty of protection. But there can be issues sometimes with laminating (or clear taping) certain cards like car insurance, vehicle registration, Social Security, Medicaid. Cause of their security features or something. That makes them vulnerable to moisture and tears to have them just be paper. So next I'm gonna look for good, clear plastic litttle single card insert pockets as lightweight as possible. 🌿Hmm that makes me wonder if a foldable, clear plastic insert pocket could work well for just the bills and still using this system. 🌿Either that or a lightweight, simple, waterproof (including any zipper being waterproof...I think its called seam-taping?) to go around this entire little binder clip packet.🌿Anyway of you have follow-up ideas or video on adding waterproofing and coun storage into this binder clip system I'd love to hear it!🌿Another minimalist tip is not all cards need to be kept cause the info is stored digitally. For example, my grocery store discount card info is found by typing my phone number. Library card I just show driver's license to librarian and they find my card number for checking out books, xeroxes, computer. I also had a bunch of outdated cards from when I lived in another state or had old accounts so I just cut them up.🌿
@flowersafeheart
@flowersafeheart Год назад
P.S. Thinking on it more, maybe I'll go with the 3.15" x 4.72" zip pouch by Fiordland Packs. About $12.13 plus shipping. It comes in abrasion-resistant, lightweight, waterproof laminates: X-Pac or Ecopac. Ecopac is I think more sustainable and low-toxic than similar fabrics X-Pac or DCF? Waxed hemp/cotton canvas would be more natural but maybe heavier and less waterproof? 🌿I guess the coins could just be loose in there and be sure they don't come spilling out when pull out the little binder clip package. But I'm very open to hearing other peoples' ideas.

This is almost like a magic trick you did with your money hahaha 🤣 yeah I'm from Australia and the concept of using money clips is foreign to us down under, us Aussie blokes generally just use a wallet but yeah the wallet does become bulky in your pocket, out of all the money clip videos I've seen this binder clip idea is most intriguing, I've learned something today, thanks mate I'll try it!! 😎👍🏻

When putting the change back into your pocket instead of the clip when in a hurry...keeps your change separate from the rest could serve as a way to reference the price of the item you bought or if they short changed you.

Seems like a trivial topic, but minimizing the junk in your pocket is a huge deal. I used just a rubber-band for a long time but a lot of fumbling involved during checkout.

Nice one. Simple approach yet effective. But the flip side to this approach is you can't use it in places where it is humid and people usually sweat. If you keep this is your pants or anywhere, the currency notes will be drenched in sweat. Even the magnetic strips of your cards might be exposed to sweat, which I don't know has any effects on the longevity of it or not!!

Been using binder clips for almost 15 years now. WAY more functional than wallets. However, I don’t see the need to wrap the cash around the cards and IDs, creates extra steps. Personally I just fold my bills in half and keep them on top of the cards & IDs, that way I can use any of it in one loosening of the clip.

I imagine those asking about coins must be Canadian or overseas somewhere, because coins in the U.S. are too small of a denomination to generally carry about. Most Americans simply pocket their loose change and then put it in the console in their car or the coin jar at home.
