Long ago, I interviewed a veterinarian who suggested keeping a good rotation of proteins and flavors of wet cat food, so that they don't get stuck on one thing. So mine have quite the variety.

Have you ever fed your cats Churu lickable cat treats? If so have you ever done a video on it? I work at Chewy and I get my cats the chicken flavored ones, they love them

Yes, I have/did. I’m not a crazy fan of all the ingredients. But I’d feed them if they weren’t eating. But if they have the appetite then I’d rather them eat healthy things. So I feed raw.

I give my cats a mix of three foods, they eat mainly tiki cat and weruva and unhealthy fancy feast once a week. I eat takeout once a week so I give my cats fancy feast once a week lol so we both are being unhealthy

@@Floppycats haha btw, some people come at me for feeding my cat mainly fish. But the vet had told me my cats have a poultry sensitivity lol. So that’s why I feed them mainly tiki cat which is primarily fish

I'm a first time cat owner, I always buy different foods for her to try. Thought that if I found the right one, she'll love it that one and eat it forever. Thought I might upset her system by giving loads of different options each month. But after seeing your pantry, i feel alright and it's not bad to continue what i'm doing.

i am no expert - but this has worked out well for us over the years. there are some folks in the comments of this post that wouldn't agree. raw is best, in my opinion. check out catinfo.org to learn more.

U have good brands there and I agree with variety for various reasons. My cat loves the Waruva pouches the best of any food and I've spent tons of money on her picky and sensitive self. I throw so much away because she won't eat. Its stressful because the only kind she eats eagerly (even purrs when she sees pouches) and eats completely, but she gets soft stools and diarrhea. Its so difficult to waste so much money and it go down the disposal. I'm guessing your cats are not so sensitive picky?? Thank you! I subscribed.

Hello, I have a question I don't see brought up a lot. How did you get your cats used to the rotational feeding different brands/protein sources? Lots of people say you need to gradually transition from one food to the next over the course of a week, but it seems like you don't do it that way. How did you get to that point? Did you have any issues with GI upset due to the constant brand changes? I want to rotationally feed because its not only good for a varied diet but it's also great for the wallet when different brands suddenly go on sale too. I don't want to be restricted to one food if I can help it.

I don't fully recall, honestly. Maybe I introduced one new can at a time? i think we might have had some diarrhea, but again, don't recall it being bad. i think i also used probiotics at the time.

How do you introduce the new foods? I only feed my cat purina pro plan (pate) currently and his dry food, but I want to start to feed him nulo (3 flavors; shreds). And I want to feed him tiki cat (3 flavors; pate). I also sprinkle dry on top because that is the only way he eats. I want to try this rotation diet without upsetting his stomach. Any tips?

How do I get my cat to eat wet food?? Ever since he was a kitten he just licks it but won’t really eat it. But the dry food he devours it. He’s just turned 2 and I tried giving him wet again and he still hates it. He loves the smell of wet food but won’t eat it...

How do you deal with sensitive tummies? If I don’t slooowly switch foods over several days (even same brands, diff proteins) they end up with soft/sticky poops that stick to their butt fur.

luckily mine don't have that problem - probably from probiotics. but you can always transition really slowly - below is from our page: www.floppycats.com/best-canned-cat-food.html In most case a 7-day transition is ideal, but in drastic changes 10 days or more is suggested 2-3 days: 75% old food, 25% new food 2-3 days: 50% old food, 50% new food 2-3 days: 25% old food, 75% new food Following this plan gives your kitty’s digestive tract the needed time to adjust to the new food and minimizes the risk of an upset stomach.

yes, my cats won't eat tiki - or they'll eat like a can from a case, but that's it. tiki has a lot of chicken and fish in it - i try to keep more of a variety of proteins than i can get from tiki. but not a bad food.

Your feeding routine sounds very similar to mine- the Ragdoll boys eat a variety of flavours and generally from two different brands. Dry food-wise again I have a main food that they generally have but do change slightly from time to time. Madame Ratty my ten year old little black moggy will eat anything including peas off my plate if I'm not fast enough!! Thanks for sharing! :)

@@Floppycats She's such a scratter! As tiny as she is (especially compared to the Ragdoll boys) she will eat pretty much anything and if the boys leave their food, she'll eat theirs too. As she plays outside and runs up and down trees all day she's super tiny and burns off everything that she eats!

Hello. You have lots of different wet foods - when you feed your cats, do you calculate calories (as cans from different manufacturers will have different values) to vary the amount, or you just give four cans and that's it?

No. I don’t count calories. That would drive me insane. If they finish 4, I just put a 5th one down. Never had a problem with my cats being overweight on wet food only.

@@toshchakfox not necessarily - think you have to think things through and feel good about what you're feeding. i am trying to transition mine to raw now because i want them to have the best, but at 13 years old, i suspect it will take some patience and time.

I love your idea of alternating cans. I’m going to start doing that especially as I have one picky eater. I feed Tiki and Weruva but I need to buy one inexpensive brands as it’s getting hard to afford buying all expensive ones now. 😢 What brands that are cheaper (under a dollar a can) are passable to feed my cats? I know Purina and Friskies are not ideal. Is Fancy Feast a bit better? Thank you for your time!

Gosh, I am not sure. My cats are on raw now. I always wanted them on raw because that's the best diet for them. Have you considered raw? There are so many bad ingredients in a lot of those canned foods, so it's hard for me to say any are OK. And raw is cheaper than canned food. If you can consider it, I would.

I don't recommend giving your cats or kittens fancy fiest or fresikies because if you check the ingredients it says meat by products. Meat by products is very harmful for kittens or cats especially corn aswell. Remember, cats are carnivores. Do they eat corn in the wild? No. I know from my experience with my kitten. After doing alot of research and even from an advice from a veterinarian, after 3 weeks of giving my 3 month kitten cat ingredients of a cat food "Whole Paws" from whole foods, my kittens fur looked better than ever and he was so energetic and happy. You can check out they ingredients for the one brand cat food I just mentioned.

Does anyone have suggestions for picky cats ? I have two kitties but one girl she just eats kibble and I give it to her because at this point i don’t wanna starve her I tried wet food weruva, Nulo, fancy feast, whole hearted petco, tiki cat. I’m trying wellness core I’m really hoping she does like it but I’m trying she is about to turn 4 years old I’m afraid she won’t change her taste and I know kibble is convenient but is not good for the long run I’m concerned throw any suggestions please 😭

Hi Jen! My ragdoll is 7 months old and he constantly asks for food. I give him half a can of wet food + 100 grams of dry food in the entire day. Still he gets so hungry. Our vet advised us to give him approx 70gms per day but obviously he is eating much more than that. Is it normal for him to have this much food? Your comment will be much appreciated. just say no to dry food - and kick it to the curb when they are young! check out catinfo.org to see why i say that. my veterinarian always told me to let a growing kitten eat as much as they wanted - as they go through growth spurts. of course, i have never had weight problems with my cats when they are NOT on dry food. dry food usually causes overweight issues. i would also look into a raw diet - as that is the ideal diet for a cat, in my opinion.

So im now just trying out weruva for my cat I’ve been feeding her wellness for awhile now, i wanna try to give her to try to feed her both of those brands but i was wondering will that cause her to be over weight? If so how can i maintain giving her both without having that problem.

I never had a problem with my cats’ weight when they were on wet only. Just make sure they’re not eating crappy kibble or crappy kibble like treats.

I give them both dry and wet food. The reason I give them dry food is because this dry food has an ingredient to neutralize 47% of the allergens in cat dander and saliva. It helps with lowering my allergies to cats, it works. If I eliminate this dry food, I start sneezing more. Some dry food can't be that bad, can it?

Finally! Sheebus. So many videos on what brands are not good for cats, what their cat likes to eat, what food to feed the cat as in dry or wet. blah blah. but literally none of them tell you the brand which is annoying >:d Like tell me the brand, not the calorie calculations.

Ha ha. I get it. But it’s so subjective. Ultimately it comes down to what you can afford and what your cat will eat. I’ve switched mine again since making this video. They stopped eating some of these flavors. I still think they’re great foods. But honestly, raw is best. If mine would eat raw, I’d be pumped

So you feed 1 cat 2 cans and 2 packets a day? I'm still trying to figure out how much to feed them. I guess I'm really not feeding then enough (1.5 can a day). I just took my grandma recommendation, because she has 3 cats and the don't seem like their too hungry all the time and they are all pretty healthy

It depends on the cat - some cats weigh 8 lbs, some weigh 17 lbs. Your vet can help guide you to how many calories they need a day.

Hello, I have a ragdoll cat myself, and I need some advice :) She's about 11 months old (turning a year old in a few weeks), and has been basically living off only Royal Canin and Hills Science diet dry food her whole life. I used to get her wet food when she was younger, but stopped because most of it ended up in the trash (she eats half the amount I put in her bowl and leaves the rest. The wet food in her bowl always ends up hard and dry). Btw, she's a VERY picky eater! I occasionally give her cooked salmon, fish, beef, pork, e.t.c. but she rejects everything! I really don't want her growing up on just dry food. Your cats are all so fluffy and healthy, and I'm looking for a bit of advice haha. Any suggestions for what I should do? Also, would you say that Royal Canin or Hills Science diet dry food is better? Do you suggest any other brands (I don't really have a budget)? Thank you so much!!

Yes - I would read catinfo.org/ and feline-nutrition.org/ - getting them off of dry food is quite the challenge. Sorry - I think both Royal Canin and Hills Science diet dry food are not great. Those sites I listed explain why.

Maybe check out Young Again cat food if you are going to feed dry. Their food has only under 5 percent carbs I believe.

you are so right I adopted a 9 yr old cat who only ate a certain dry food all her life. I believe in wet food so it took me several months to find something she would eat. Phew so I thought then they stopped making it. So she didn't eat for 5 days until I could find another one she would eat ( and yes only one she would eat is Fancy Feast natural salmon). So I'm glad you advise to change it up!

@@Floppycats we bought at least 10 different cans and tricked her to eat the fancy feast by putting her pure salmon treats on top and throughout food. right now looking to get better quality cat food for her, she likes Pate, so checking out Castor and Pollux salmon pate. trying to find a place to order just 2-3 instead a case and if not liked have to pay to return. what I won't do for my Lucy!

In dealing with my two new ones, I am done with their ultra rich "baby" foods and now on to "kitten" food. I agree with you that there needs to be a variety...btw: my hubby calls my "dry food addict" - "the little crackhead"....not funny! However, he is eating more wet food. Anyways, they're doing great!...and LOVING eating once again! Their little tummies seem to be on the right track. This is another great video that I can learn from. Thanks, Jenny! no, they don't - they are very used to the switching - and that's why i do it - so their guts are used to it. but you can always ease your kitty into it - like add one tablespoon of a new food to their old food - and then slowly increase over a week - watching their litterbox - back off if they have diarrhea. does that make sense?

@@dee_b_wildin with my cats, no. I just give them new food when I want to because they’re used to so many brands/proteins. And no, they just eat whatever I put out. So they could eat half of one can or a whole can. It’s up to them and works for us.

I was always told and still told that you should not constantly switch foods and that they should get 1 brand only and if you do switch foods you need to do it slowly over a week or 2 .

Most certainly if your cat is on one brand, then you need to switch slowly over a week or two. But if they’re used to multiple brands/proteins, then that’s not as necessary. The one brand/one flavor thing can be dangerous over time if they won’t eat anything else and that flavor is discontinued. Think I sort if explained that in this video. I just would offer a new flavor and if they went for it, kept it in rotation. Mine have been on a rotation for a very long time - I've certainly wasted a lot of food in the process. You have to make sure their gut can handle the different proteins too. So maybe try probiotics?

i tried wellness on mine in the beginning and they didn't care for it. so i didn't really continue. i like the NZ foods so much too, so i just prefer to keep them on what they're on. i did buy some wellness for my parents' renal failure kitty - and he ate it well.

@@Floppycats Too funny! I'm just switching my kittens over from kitten food to adult food and so far they don't want to touch the NZ food, but they love the Wellness grain free food. I'll keep trying for a bite since the NZ is expensive, but if they continue not to eat it, I'll donate it. It might have something to do with the texture, since the Wellness appears more moist.

I’m not a vet or a nutritionist. I can’t guide you there. At the end of the day it’s about what they’ll eat, what you can afford and what you feel comfortable with. I think a raw diet is the best. Trying to transition mine.

Ommg I thought I was crazy for switching food. My cat is sooo picky...he won't eat the same foood! He likes to have different taste. If I feed him the same thing all day he just ignores it until I give him a different one...he doesn't have diahrea.

thank you for asking for clarification and sorry that wasn't clear. i give them 2 cans in the morning and then 2 at night....and if those are all done, then i will add a 5th can overnight. so it's 2 cans per cat per day. but i know chiggy eats more than charlie does! does that help clear things up?

@@Floppycats Your cat eats so much more than my cat. I also have a ragdoll she will be 2 in April. I’ve been feeding her raw food along with some Ziwi peak and the Feline natural. I’ve been reading how dry food is not good for cats. Anyway she has hardly been eating and she has lost a bit of weight. I took her to the vet because I thought she had sore gums. The vet said she has a little bit of redness along the gum line. Asked me what I feed her, she said maybe it’s too many types of cat food. She advised me to buy Hill dry food which is complete nutrition and it’s the dental cleaning food. I thought oh no I don’t want to go back to dry food. Any way I bought the pack and she eats it on and off through out the day. I also give her the raw meat patties which I thaw out. She always leaves it. She doesn’t even eat an entire patty. I cut in half and she leaves it. Those Ziwi peak cans she would only eat half of it for the entire day. She has loads of energy wants to play all the time. Since Covid I’ve been working at home and she always follows me has to be near me. So she will sleep next to me all day while I work and not eat. I’m keeping an eye on her weight. The vet said cats do well on dry food. I don’t know what to believe anymore. Too much info too confusing.

@@Floppycats Thanks for the link I read it. I’m amazed at how Vets don’t know this info. I’m from Australia and most of our Vets stock only Hills. I’ll use up the Hills dry as it’s too expensive to waste. I only tried as she wasn’t eating much wet food. I’ll go back to buying some Ziwi Peak and Feline Natural. I currently use a brand called Big Dog for Cats. It’s frozen meat patties and there is also Leaps and bounds also frozen meat patties. The vet said the crunchy dry food helps clean their teeth.

that doesn't really help with gut flora. would a cat, if it were fending for itself, only eat one kind of mouse every day, day in and day out? it's sort of illogical, if you think about it. i think vets gave that advice at one point to make their lives easier.

@@Floppycats it does sound illogical, but as someone who is still learning, it sounded plausible at the time and I just had no reason to change my thoughts on it. Idk what's in cat food. It's supposed to be super unregulated, can food does not really compare to wild caught. My concerns were maybe the additives of the different brands might cause problems not variety of diet.

@@TheSlickIzzy That's fair - and you're right, not all canned cat food is created equally. Yes, you have to be careful about which brands to choose - as I have done in this video. But mixing brands that you're OK with, is fine. And as I think I said in this video, you don't want your cat to become so picky that s/he only eats one kind of food - because if that food is discontinued or like people are having problems with shipping shortages now, you're not up shit creek without a paddle.

@@Floppycats , no. It was not sarcasm. Generally speaking, people think if a cat eats what's put in front of it, its good for them. They get certain breeds of cats or dogs because their fashionable or cute and care very little to research what they need for optimal health, physically and emotionally. My cat (Gimbal) means everything to me, so I've done a little research and learned some things. He gets Feline Naturals canned food. Looking for a good alternative dry food as well. Anyway, i hope i wasn't being harsh or too critical. I enjoyed the way you organize their food. Cheers

I just found this video on my home page. Very informative. I can't afford a raw diet yet. I feed my two kittens, nine months old, a mix of different brands and flavors, for the reason you mention. I don't want them to get too picky. I also add some raw ground beef or chicken and beef bone broth several days a week. Once a week, they get a raw egg yolk mixed in too. Thank you for posting.

@@Floppycats Thank you. Yes, I use fresh, locally sourced beef and chicken. Organic eggs from free range chickens. To switch to prepared raw, is more expensive. If I prepare my own, requires supplements, that are also expensive. Making a slow transition. I hope to switch to a raw diet by the time they are a year old. They are eating much better, than before I found all of this information online. I didn't even know, what I didn't know! Thank you so much.

Weruva is a hit with Andre’! I bought the Rainbow pack and he licked the bowl completely clean. I was feeding him Royal Canin Maine Coon wet food. Needless to say, we won’t be buying him RC canned in the future. I still put out RC Ragdoll dry kibble to free feed between morning and nighttime canned feeds.

ha ha ha --> a veterinarian with years of experience told me that story. and i am pleased with feeding my cats this variety - i have operated my website for 13 years and cannot begin to tell you the problems people have from having their cats on one food, one variety. i mean, think about it - does a lion only kill one type of animal and only eat that? no. cats fed the same thing day in and day out have stomach issues - because their stomachs aren't used to the variety.

@@Floppycats Of course variety of cat food is good for them. But cats in their natural environment would only eat a selection of different preys that existed there. They didn't have a choice of 100+ preys to choose from that they carefully rotated every other day. They hunted what was available, and they were good at hunting and was available to them. Some cats might've never eaten fish for example or duck because those did not exist in their environment. Point is, some variety is good for them, but excessive varience in diets and feeding them things they might not have hunted in the past might make them worse off.

the best food would be one that contains few ingredients (like around say 3-4) which are mostly meat. When that's not possible manufactures cook the meat and lose some vitamins and such so they add a lot of artificial stuff instead of the nutrients they lost (including preservative btw but I don't have an issue with those). Cats have been living on those for decades and even hundred of years so those are ok to feed your cat but be on the lookout for the good stuff in the paragraph above. And BTW: Cats do not need sugar or carbohydrates (which are sugars). any grains such as corn, beans, potatoes and more are basically carbohydrates. in percentage wise those should be in the single digits (when even %10 is approaching the lower limit of too much carbohydrates which is at the range of %10-%15) so that's the basic about food. and btw in nature cats do not eat fish (they will eat one if they can but they have no ability to catch fish)

the only difference between kitten food and regular cat food is the amount of fat. my vet always told me to just feed my kittens as much as they wanted to eat. they go through growth spurts, etc. but i think you can feed adult canned food now, if you want - in fact, if i were you, i would try raw! check out our page here to see why - www.floppycats.com/best-canned-cat-food.html

Hi! Does this list take into account the grain free ingredient recommendations from your previous interview with Dr. Hofve (e.g. taurine levels, carbs etc.)? My vet suggested I move away from grain free without providing the research behind ingredients. Listening to your interview, it sounds like grain free isn’t bad as long as the ingredient/ nutrient calculation checks out. I’m a little lost in all the details Dr. Hofve discussed. Please help. My ragdoll loves Wellness, Nulo, and Tiki Cat so far. She also loves the Whole Life treats you recommended. Thank you!

No, it doesn't take into account that. Although Dr. Jean did mention the Life’s Abundance Pork & Lamb lifesabundance.com/floppycats in that interview. So that one does. I am not sure of the others. The more I learn, the less I worry - as long as their main diet isn't dry food. I really don't like to talk about nutrition since I am not a veterinarian - also, I never recommend - you said I recommended above, but if you listen closely in my videos, I never say "recommend". I cannot. I don't know your cat, your budget, your lifestyle. All I can do is share what we do and how my cats react, etc. and then let cat owners make their own educated decisions from there. But I am glad your kitty likes Whole Life - I do think highly of that company.

@@Floppycats yes, but you know so much more than I do about all things cats ☺️ Maybe I worry too much as a first time kitty mom. I’ll add the non grain free Wellness that my vet recommended to the rotation also, but I won’t stress about this topic anymore. My kitten loved most of the things I bought from your list of favorites. I’m excited to try a few more from the food flavors that your cats enjoy. Thank you for getting back to me.

@@cristinastoia1 you're welcome. if i had a kitten and only a kitten, man, i'd do raw. that's based on what i have learned. mine won't transition to raw easily or they would be on it.

@@Floppycats Raw might work for her. She always comes near me when I cook from raw which tells me the smell attracts her. Hmm, I’ll have to give it a try.

sorry to hear that - ultimately the best canned cat food is the one that your cats will eat, fits your budget, etc. i personally believe that ziwipeak and feline natural are the best ones out there - but i am not a cat nutritionist - so not sure if you should pay mind to what a fellow cat owner thinks?

My cat loves Weruva but he has these soft pasty poos that stick to him making a mess every where...how I know this?.. I did a test and definitely was the culprit...no more!
