I asked a professional clerk in a running store how he determined how he selected Altra shoes. Turns out wider box are the best suggested shoe you’ll ever make. This is a great short vlog explanation. You’re buying shoes all the time. Go try on a pair. Walk and notice an immediate difference. Plus your toes can grab an inserted $100 bill inside your shoe box as exercise.

I’ve had a pair for over a year. 10,000 intentional 5 days a week. They don’t hold up well on the sole as for wear. However, the most comfortable walking shoe I’ve yet to walk across the slab. I had a NorthFace Ultra trail walking shoe (for walking on asphalt), I put on a few hundred miles intentionally fast walking all over daily and they were phenomenal. I had inserts which cramped my foot. I’m totally sold on Altra as they are from factory. Still sucks made in China. What up with that people? Take care of yourselves out there:

You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video! Great question, some people find these shoes great for walking and running. I use them as my everyday shoe as well as my running shoe. The key is that if you are not used to a zero drop shoe to transition into the slowly! 💫

Thank you, glad you enjoyed! Great question and it always depends. You want to look for what works best & feels best for your foot. The zero drop is good because it allows the muscles on the bottom of your foot to work how they want during gait or your activity. Verses if there is a lot of interface in between your foot and the ground. So if you have the muscle control or work on building it, yes, zero drop is a great option. Lastly, slowly transitioning to the zero drop to allow your foot time to adjust. Hope that helps & please let me know if you have any other questions!

Transitioning to zero drop shoes with wide toe boxes has made an enormous difference in how my knees ankles and feet feel. I wear almost nothing but my Bedrock sandals and Ultras now. Now if I can just find something dressier.

That is awesome to hear! My feet have been much happier in the wider toe boxes too! Have you checked out vivo barefoot or lems for slightly dresser options? They have some shoes other than sneakers & more casual sneakers too.

I have looked at those and some others. Right now I’m leaning toward the Tadeevo leather ballet pumps or the leather flats by Xero because they could be stretched if they area little tight across the instep.

So I am wondering about the trasition to zero drop shoes...my shoes are pretty shot and I need a new pair..i cant afford two new pairs of $150.00 running shoes at the same time atm. Why the slow transition necessary?? I do walk in flat flip flop all the time around the house..However not sure if that makes a difference.....I am wearing Nike Air walking shoes with a decent toe box, but was just noticing my toe box seems to feel tighter and I have foot pain under the balls of my feet and at center of my heels...of course maybe my shoes are just needing to be replaced...i am so torn between the Nike torch 4 and trying Altra'a...I am also considering Brookes ghosts..please help

The most important thing is that the shoes are comfortable for you. The transition time is just to allow your feet time to adapt to the change. Some people can transition faster. If you can, try the shoes on first and see what you think. I'm a big fan of altra's with that wider toe box

Hi, MSUNN, I'd appreciate if you can address the following Qs (summarized at end). Do these come in size D? And hold up to bad weather the way the top-quality Leather NewBalance WW574 did? Also, since these have newfangled shoelaces, how can they be adjusted to make room for [not just] prominent varicose on upper parts of insteps, [but also] edema at ankle? Also - do they avoid digging into protruding ankle-bones? ...To summarize my questions: (1) Size D? (2) bad-weather durable? (3) Newfangled laces vs. Varicose Insteps? (4) Newfangled laces vs. Ankle-Edema? (5) Dig into protruding ankle bones? Thanks.

The escalante does not come in wide, however their toe box is wider than most shoes. The Lone Peak 5 and Torin 5 models come in wide (side D). The escalante's durability has been great for me, but the outer knit mesh material is very different than a leather shoe. The escalante is geared more to a minimalist shoe to allow your foot it's normal mechanics and not as supportive or rigid as the new balance. This being said it doesn't dig into protruding ankle bones it's much more adaptable. All of the escalantes I have had have had regular shoe laces that I can adjust on my own. Hope this was helpful! @@DrMelissaOleson Thanks, the Torin 5 i didn't see size wide on Amazon,and Lone Peak only the green size 6 was wide, and limited stock. I still have some Qs, such as, are these Escalantes friendly to prominent varicose-insteps? friendly to ankle edema? They don't appear as if their laces are adjustable to allow for BIG veins and ankle-swelling.

@@minniyoutubasterI just discovered the Altra Mont Blanc style of shoe. They don’t come in wide, but the toe box in just their regular shoe is much, much wider than other wide sized shoes. I don’t know the answer to your other questions, tho..

Ill try the ultras. I have Whitten but I dont like the materual or look of shoe. They are comfortable. Lems I want to try. Along with Topo. Any other wide toe shoes. Would be nice if New balance mase a wide toe box. Always felt comfortable in those because I have flat feet. Do you know of any socks that have the wide toe box? I like ti wear socks in shoes and I feel sicks bunch up your feet though.

Flux is another brand of wide toe box shoes and for socks injinji or barebarics are wide toe box shoes.

@@DrMelissaOleson I just purchased a pair of Altra Torin 7s because they're stacked a bit higher than the Escalante and I can be on my feet for hours on end at work. I've been getting ads for Flux, but I'm curious about the cushioning and if they have as wide of a toe box as Altra (some reviewers say they don't so hmmmm). Xero makes some great zero drop shoes, but the lack of cushion wouldn't work as a work shoes (working through a metatarsal issue right now). Would love to know you opinion if you've used Flux, especially the Adapt Runner.

I've been searching for them too! I need a new pair. I have the 3 and do not like it as much as the 2.5, but these are my running shoes. For everyday shoes, the 3 works well for me. The big thing is looking for a wide toe box shoe and that are comfortable for you💕

There are different models of the Altra's that have more cushion then the escalente. There are so many different brands and types of wide toe box shoes it's finding what works best for your feet. I also love using toe spacers to help build up the strength in the bottom if the feet.

Great question! For my clients that have bunions, I have found Altra's wide toe box to be really helpful, plus enough room to get a toe spacer or correct toes in as well. They have a number of different types of wide toe box shoes that might work for you. If you are not used to a zero drop shoe you would want to slowly build yourself up to wearing them all day.

It really depends on your comfort, but I recommend the paradigm or the escalante to my clients.

I also recommend giving Freet, Barebarics, and Topo shoes a try. They're amazing. Much better than Altra and Xero.

Altra's are a wide toe box zero drop shoe, which is why I love them so much. It takes times to transition over into this type of shoe, however it allows the muscles on the bottom of your foot to work and build up strength.

Flat feet, Plantar issues, spent 2 years in horrid pain...i spent a fortune trying to get rid of the Plantar - nothing worked. The socks, the orthotics, the electro impulses and cortisone type needles ---- did my own research, found "Correct Toes" little device and then I bought a pair of Altra Torin Plush 4.5's a year ago. I wished I had done this sooner - --- They DO take some time to get used to the zero drop - i still have some achy days with my knee and hip, but the plantar is all but G O N E! I did happen to notice on the underside of both big toes, my toe has worn a complete hole in the insert and starting to go into the rubber. Time for new ones - I don't run anymore - I use these for working daily standing/walking on concrete floors. Any idea why my big toes are digging into the ground so drastically? Is it the zero drop or bad bone structure now? (I am 50 yrs old, male) Thanks :)

So awesome to hear you have gotten rid of your plantar fasciitis! So amazing! Correct toes and altra shoes are at the top of my list for my clients dealing with foot pain. You could be noticing the wearing patterns under your big toe for a couple of different reasons. You can look at how much flexibility you have in your big toe, where the weight is distributed on your foot when standing (heels, forefoot, outside feet, arches closer to ground), do you notice if you grip your toes, and then the strength of the tiny muscles on the bottom of your foot are really important!

(I did 8 yrs of martial arts - we grab everything with our toes lol)..I have just never had that toe hole happen with any other shoes - thought (maybe) the zero drop was making my big toe reach for more traction... great video and content. @@Crushin123 You could be gripping more with the transition to zero drop or you could be using the muscles on the bottom of your feet differently now that you have the wide toe box. With the transition to wider toe box shoes working on trying to spread your toes apart can be helpful to get the tiny muscles on the bottom of your feet firing up. Have a good one!

Great question! These are great for for both because of the wide toe box! More space=happy feet! There is enough room in these shoes that you can wear toe spacers as well. The wider toe box will help you start to be able to use your deep feet muscles and help prevent the bunion from getting worse.

They are minimalist shoes so it does take your foot some time to adjust and adapt to the soles. Those intrinsic muscles on the bottom of your feet do get firing up while slowly transitioning.

Yeah... You should NEVER wear conventional shoes like those Nikes that constrict and deform your toes. Donate of burn those Nikes, Dr Melissa. Her "logic": "Even though these are very unhealthy and uncomfortable and have literally no positive attributes over Altra, Topo, or other foot-shaped shoes, I'm gonna keep wearing them and constricting and deforming my feet because..."

I love wide toe box toes so that you feet can move, lengthen, activate how they want and a narrower typical shoe squished them so they cannot do this.
