That leaves you with a regular old egg sucking leech.

My father in law has been making his own flies his whole life. He’s obsessed with fishing, their honeymoon was a fishing holiday 😂 he even made a lake for fly fishing g which he opened to the public, his flies are just a work of art, truly beautiful. 🎣 🐟

Happy to help! I'll work to start to get more Bass videos out for you. There are a lot of fun ones to use and tie. Think I default to trout because It's what I know best and also easier to edit. But we'll get some more on here soon.
fellow Bass hunter from MICH...my 1st fly rod was a 9wt pflueger with a fast multiplier type reel that i had visions of fighting steelhead / salmon but i took it to a basslake with a homemade leech pattern fly, and had a blast hooking 3 pounders .... a helpful tip is make sure you get a " bass taper" fly line for your favorite flyrod, as it has a heavier front section to cast the larger flys and bass bugs like poppers ect. ....also, practice your casting in the yard, by letting out about 10 ft of line, then just swing it front and back , stopping at about the 10 o'clock to 1o'clock position and wait til you feel the weight of the line behind you, as it 'loads' the rod, then bring it again forward, ect. then just increase the length gradually til you can control longer lengths above your head... at least , thats how I learned! lol GOOD LUCK

I miss tying flies so much. Lost my eyesight and donated all of my thousands of dollars of equipment and material to a coworker. I hope she is enjoying it as much as I did.

For anyone actually curious about his terminology, it’s not made up as the “plumbus” comments might suggest. I’ll try to be as accurate as possible but a pedant could certainly point out errors or regional differences. A woolly bugger is a type of fly. The egg sucking leech is a beadhead woolly bugger. Beadhead means the fly has a bead as its “head”, in this case the “fish egg”. Marabou is a fashion trimming, usually with marabou stork feathers, that can be made as part of clothing or as a standalone accessory. It’s that white fluffy stuff in that one Marilyn Monroe image and the fluff on Cruella’s coat in 101 Dalmatians. The feathers, and term, is also used in fly tying. The feathers are naturally white but hold dye very well. Krystal flash is a flashabou from the company Hareline. Flashabou is a string-like material used in fly tying. I believe that it’s usually made from BoPET which is a tensile plastic. BoPET can be metallized, aka covered with a thin layer of metal, to make it glossy. It’s the material many commercial helium balloons are made of. Chenille is a type of yarn but can also describe fabric made from the yarn. It’s a cotton that gets its name from the French word for caterpillar, which it sort of resembles in a crude way. It can be used as the outer material for pipe cleaners, but isn’t the only yarn that can be used in their production. A hackle, when speaking about birds or feathers, is a specific feather on a bird. Saddle hackle comes from the back of a bird as opposed to cape hackle which is from its neck. The distinction between “hackle” and just “feather” is necessary as they have differing properties. Saddle and cape hackle are also distinct in their properties. Edit: Hackle feathers are erectile, much like hackle fur in mammals (think of a cat “raising” its back). Hackle can also be used as a verb for when you spin the feather around the fly so that the barbs of the feather stand erect around the fly’s body. Hackle “quality” is important when considering what type of fly you want. Some hackle is waterproof and used for dry flies. Hackle quality is bred for in domestic birds. Marabou is traditionally made from marabou stork feathers but I believe the term can be used for down feathers in general in fly tying, much like in clothing.
