I must have gotten through hundreds of derwent coloursoft pencils, the pigmentation is brilliant. For amateurs like me, they really help to show different tones and gradients. Great video!
+Lisa Hock, thanks for the suggestion...I've heard this before and I'm glad to hear it from you as well. Maybe that pretty little pencil will sneak into my next Amazon order 😉
Lisa Hock I was thinking about picking one of those up. My white prismacolor arrived to me with the wooden barrel split halfway down the pencil. Some of my other prismas are splitting to.
I think there might be some user bias sticking the Prismacolors into the top 3. The Caran D'Ache Pablo has both a nicer gradient and a more even colour by the look of your swatches.
+cddewey, thanks for your feedback. I’m going to do a follow up video soon and I think I will do more coloring with each of the top 10 plus another entry that I purchased. Should be interesting.
Please try Faber Castel Albrecht Dürer..they are Walter Color Pencils...but my favourite of all. Plus for me is sharpening a big point that is why I don't like the Prisma Color
+moscha perle, yes I agree about the points of the pencils...especially when doing detailed work. I would love to try those Albrecht pencils. I will move onto water soluble pencils when I'm done reviewing these.
Bruynzeel is a really famous art brand here in the netherlands. They have all sorts of art supplies and it’s pretty affordable. allot of students get their graphite pencils if they want something good for art class.
My opinion is that the crayola twistable is much worse than the cra z art one. I also believe the prismacolour isn't quite as good as some of the honourable mentions. I love prismacolour pencils don't get me wrong I just think you got a better gradient with the others
Grim Hood sameee! prismacolor pencils should be in the honorable mentions because is really perfect! I have tried with other colored pencils but the prismacolor is the better pencils
+Carmelle Lapointe, very good question...I was pondering 🤔 recording a similar video dedicated to the black pencils. Do you think this would be helpful to you?
I'd just like to say i'm SUPER appreciative and greatful for all of these videos you do, you put so much time and energy and care into testing art supplies and finding the best ones, and it shows! it saves us a LOT of time, money, and frustration and it's awesome knowing I have you as a resource before I go art supply shopping
Coloring Pages Bliss I'm 14, but I do art as well having a 48 set of the premier and 24 sets of the verithin. the individual colored pencils and sets , I can't denied the fact how affordable the Prismacolor are to get compared to polychromos and lluminanc sets and individual cost being expensive to buy.
Yeah, I have a bunch of prismacolors. I like their pigmentation, but the waxy surface means a lot of work to blend them. Needs a solvent or a blending pencil and a lot of elbow grease.
Some information on Bruynzeel pencils. Bruynzeel pencils is owned by Sakura, the company that makes GellyRoll pens and Pigma Micron pens. The Bruynzeel pencil that you tested is from the Super Sixties set which are the same pencils as Marco Raffine. The Bruynzeel Design pencils are the same as Marco Renior pencils. But the Marco pencils are available in larger sets than the Bruynzeel,.
I actually found out when I was poking around the internet, researching the Marco Renoir pencils before I bought them. The Marco Renoir pencils have the same numbering, font, barrel and core as the 48 (largest) set of Bruynzeel Design , plus of course, the Renoir pencils come with an extended amount of pencils, up to 100 ct. I got the Marco Renoir 100 ct set from Amazon. The Bruynzeel Pencils are marketed as more high end, with smaller more targeted pallets, with an upscale box on the Design pencils, its a sturdy cardboard box like the Caran d'Ache Luminance box, but has drawers with foam inserts with spots for each pencil, cradling them in the drawers. But, they are sourced from the same manufacturer of pencils as the Marco Renoir pencils. Also, the same goes for the Super Sixties set matching the colors, barrel and cores of the Raffine pencils, 44 of the 72 colors available in the Marco Raffine line and the set of 12 Marco metallic pencils, plus 2 graphite drawing pencils, a sharpener and eraser bringing the set up to 60 items in the Bruynzeel Super Sixties tin.
+Melissa Fisk makes me wonder if the China company Marco was copying the Sakura Bruynzeel company or are they indeed affiliated? Hmmmm. China has a habit of knocking off products.
The Bruynzeel pencils are now made in China, but still bear the Holland name on them because that's where Royal Talens, the original owner of Bruynzeel pencils, is from. I am guessing for some reason Sakura was allowed to keep the Holland name. Maybe because Holland is now a nick name/historical name for The Netherlands and not it's actual place name? The new pencils, made in China, are still widely available in The Netherlands and is still a favored local brand. They are the same pencils as the Marco pencils, as they are sourced from the same manufacturer in China. That particular manufacturer of pencils in China sources a lot of cheaper pencil sets (Raffines) that you see on Amazon. And, I suspect, the Crayola Escapes pencils are also re-branded Marco Raffines. Although, I haven't bought a set of Crayola Escapes to test this out since I have enough sets of cheaper color pencil sets, as I am sure a lot of us do..lol. It is not uncommon for a manufacturer of colored pencils to make them for more than one brand. I have tested and confirmed ,for myself, that Koh-I-Noor pencils are the same pencils as Blick Studio colored pencils from Dick Blick. ETA: Some of the Bruynzeel pencils sets are available on the Dick Blick website, and some of the Bruynzeel Design pencils are available as open stock.
Actually, Sukura acquired this with Royal Talens in 1991. They also own Rembrandt (as in oil paints, water colors and pastels) as well as many other brands. You can check their history on the website. The following is from Royal Talens website. (I always believe in giving credit where credit is due.) Check them out: www.royaltalens.com/en-gb/ Bruynzeel Since 1948, the Dutch company Bruynzeel has been supplying top quality writing, colouring and hobby products for the home, school and offices. With its wide product range, Bruynzeel provides an answer to every functional or creative question; whether this involves expressing your imagination through drawing, colours and painting or learning to write in a sound manner.
Thanks for another informative video I kinda discovered blending with a white pencil on my own accidentally and I use it sometimes more than a colorless blender due to the fact that the blender pencil does more of pushing the pigment deeper into the paper than mellowing the color out. But they sure still one of my new best friends lol
Just my opinion but I think any of the honorable mentions are better than prismacolor. The prismacolor has a splotchy appearance and not smooth, consistent color.
That was a very interesting, informative video. I always blend with my white prismacolor or Polychromos but I will definitely be buying the Caran d"Ache Luminance and giving it a go. Thanks for sharing.
For those who are checking this video out, I checked at the Dick Blick's website and you can buy the Caran D Ache Luminance White pencil all by itself! The Luminance lineup is finally open stock!
Thanks so much for this test...it is a much needed comparison. I had to laugh, because my "lists" were identical to yours, except for one...I switched the Prisma Premiere and the CD Pablo. I had been using Prismas since I was a teenager and first got started (I'm 60 now) and I always loved them passionately! However, when the company changed hands and the pencils I bought to replace my original set started to constantly and consistently break.( I put them in the microwave, I put them in the freezer..grrr)...my love affair was OVER. Yes, the intensity is nice...but I was spending twice what I would have before because of the unbelievable waste when the pencils would break. So...I switched and now have a set of Polychromos AND a set of Coloursoft. Yes...the rest of the Coloursoft pencils are as beautiful as the white..you will totally enjoy them. I have heard wonderful things about the Caran D'ache Lumi's....and although there is no way I can afford a full set (yea, right....waaaay out of my budget right now! lol) I think I WILL purchase one of the white pencils. I use white for so many things. Again...thank you for helping me to make that "white pencil" decision! lol God Bless!!! One of my favorite channels! (FYI....I still do USE my Prismas....when I color in books and need to take something with me, I know that I will get a nice result with the constant worry about accidentally breaking my loved Polychromos! I will continue to use them until I use them up. No need to waste a good colored pencil!
+connie ulrich, unfortunately that's not one of the many set I that I have in my studio right now. I will see if I can bring it in sometime in the future.
I think I would not like the prismacolor pencils. It looks like they come down too. . Spotty. I prefer very smooth pencils like polychromos.. sorry, my English is very bad.
Coloring Pages Bliss I did not mean that I think they're bad. I mostly draw very small, fine things, sometimes faces the size of my fingertips. I guess it would be not the best choice for my art "style".
Can't help but notice that the trio of colors and that blue you use at the end to demonstrate blending look like they'd be perfect for coloring a charizaed.
You make such awesome comparison videos. I know they take a lot of time and I appreciate it. I was surprised about the Derwent coloursoft. I have a few of those that I love but no white. This was very interesting!
Great video! Thank you! Another great white pencil is; Derwent Chinese White - 7200 - $2.09. I buy them from Blick. Here's the product number and price.
I have the polychromos , I realllllyyy do love them but the white polychromo is just .... SO TRANSLUCENT . they are just good for blending but if used as a white coloured pencil . They are just , you know what I mean
I was so surprised when I purchased the Derwent coloursoft. I’m not the most experienced with coloured pencils but finding I use them as my finisher pencil. I have the Caran D’Ache and use them all them time. Might need to buy more prisma colours! 😂😂 You should update this video. I’d love to see how the Derwent Lightfast stack up?
Well now Prisma individual pencils are $1.99. They've increased 79 cents in the span of two years which is stupidly overpriced. Not even the Derwents have increased that much ($1.69 each with an increase of 44 cents in two years). Caran D'ache: $4.71 with an increase of 62 cents in two years. Honestly Prismacolor needs to get their heads out of their own ass.
Guessed the two worst ones but for the second best one it went down like this: Her:You’d be surprised by this one Me: I don’t know, ima guess Derwents, I will freak out if I’m right. Her: derwents Me:AHHHHHHHHH
Thank you for testing the white pencils on black paper and the demonstration of blending colors with white. You go to a lot of trouble to help us improve our use of colored pencils.
I do a lot of charcoal pieces so I need a white pencil I can use for fine highlights and smooth tones. But the whites I’ve used army White whatsoever. Their more of a silver blueish color.
Although not a true colored pencil if one wants a real bright white for their art, I choose General's White Charcoal pencil. It is the brightest white one can get in pencils.
Fantastic review and comparison ! I too consider white my favorite color of pencils. I use my prismacolor white for most projects. I love what the Derwent and especially the luminance can do.Thanks for enlightening me !
Thank you, Jennifer, for raking the time to compare so many different pencils for us! I do have a question, though. Did you test any of the Staedtler pencils? If so, where did they fall in the grand scheme of things? I do love my Prismas. I have the small set of Derwent flesh tones, which literally take my breath away.
Great video. Polychromos pencils are my favorites. Can you use the Prismacolor White with them since they are oil based and the Prismas are wax based? Please keep making these videos. I've learned so much from you.
I know this was from 3 years ago, but I am surprised to see you missed my go-to White Pencil the Holbein White. I cannot say enough good things about it...It is like the Mercedes Benz of white pencils to me...lol... I would love to see you do another one of these adding some new pencils like Black Widow, Schpiererr Farben, Castle, Derwent Chinese White & others...
+Jenn Palmtree...yes I do! I'm hoping to bring in a few more requested brands if pencils first and then I will film a video dedicated to black pencils...which I LOVE and use all the time.
What would be a good and cheap white pencil for a younger artist? My current white pencils don't layer well, but I can't afford the "super cool" brands.
+lorrane thanks for your feedback. I made sure the paper had some tooth, and I felt like the pencils were sharpened. I would love to get my hands on the Holbein. They are in my Amazon cart...someday I will have some extra money to purchase them.
I have the Prismacolor Premier 132qty. I’ve been using Prismacolor for at least 20 years. I’ve had at least 3-4 sets. I want Caran d’Ache Luminance, Derwent Inktense and Faber Castel Polychromos. I really love watching your comparison videos. I’ve been drawing since I could hold a crayon/pencil. Edit: The lion in my profile picture I drew when I was 15.
