An owner overview of the Bestop Supertop installed on my 202 Ford F-150. I show the topper inside and out, and go over all of the features and flaws of the Bestop Supertop 2. I also drop the top and time how long it takes to drop it.

Without, the outer layer fencings as added security, you only need three tie points at the very centre's top on the underneath supporting layer as the canopy itself holds everything down afterward. The maximum amount of of fencing required would be 4×6 or even 3x6 (the 6' being the longest truck bed). Unscrew the hose connectors, take out fencing, and retract... The fencings I use are black rubber/plastic coated and they roll up quite nicely for a hideaway... my process with a hand ratching for the three hose connectors and fencings' removal process added a couple extra minutes than standard time. If you chose to add fencing to the outer skin for added security, naturally, that will become more complicated process which probably would take 15-20 minutes to remove I suspect.

Fix for the rain on the roof. Line the top and/or bottom of that tarp with black duck tape, it’ll add extra protection, will still be flexible when folding the top, and it will stop the water from leaking through.
@timothychung4811

Here is my trick to solving your rain pocket issue. I use wire mesh fences in black over the frame's rood form to cover up the entire spans; don't worry about the side as there is no weight bearing issues.Tie the fences to the frames with those hose connector ties- aluminum and screws... the fence allows for even weight distribution and added security. If one is worried over easy cut to the tarp, add an outside layer of the same fence, but tuck the fence under the rails. Naturally, you'd have to loosen the secured brackets to allow for some room. I would also imagine that you'd have to leave enough distances of fencing on the inside so that you can secure it with addition tie downs for a tighter fit. As you tightened the fencing, you probably would have to tightened the main bracks slowly... repeating the process until everything is tightened properly? Lastly, use tin nippers to cut accordingly add the ends for symmetry with the canopy. Add bonus, dependent on the color of your tarp, the fences can be sprayed painted for one's own pleasure of contrast- eg- red fencing to contrast with black.. Sorry for the blabbin, my imaginationjust went wildly....

Thanks for the thoughts. I would be worried about how that type of mod would affect the ease and ability of folding the top up. I think it might be a good idea if you never plan to fold the top.
@timothychung4811

@@keepercity The only time I add fencing to the exterior is when there are projects that requires a bit more security. I just use plastic coated fencings underneath the tarps with 3 tie points at the center top of the frame. My fencing diameters are roughly 4×5 as I have an Avalanche. The tie downs are just to prevent shifting from vibrations. The tarp traps everything else after. Unscrewing the hose tie connectors that I use to tied town the fencing to the frame takes about a minute as I use a hand ratchet screwdriver. Pull out the 4×5 fencing and retract. No worries of molds or nothing.

Put a 2 dollar pool noodle in between the top of the canvas and the two poles to help push up on the spot that fills with water to avoid the sag. The noodle will be easy to move but also hold itself in place only costing a few bucks. 7:25

Are the zippers a PITA due to hard to access or zipper stiffness? Have you tried waxing the zippers? I do that with my ice hut to keep them from freezing. Speaking of ice hut, that's the main reason I want one of these, the hut doesn't fit under my tonneau cover. A hard cover is out of the question, nowhere to store it or take it on/off and I'll need the ease of up/down giving access to my 5th wheel hitch in the summer months. Also - the tailgate sealers work really well. I had one on my old 150 and 250 with tonneau covers. The bed would fill with dirt from driving down dirt roads and the seals helped tremendously! Safe travels!
@keepercity
@keepercity 3 года назад
It's not so much the actual zipping. Once you get it all lined up the zippers run up and down just fine. It's getting the zipper started that's the issue. It seems in freezing weather, the fabric contracts just enough to where it makes it a chore to pull the two zipper sides together and line up the tangs. To complicate things, there are J hook tracks on the top sides of all the windows that have trouble staying together while you are trying to line up the zipper and they tend to fall or come apart right when you get the zipper going. The last obstacle with the zippers are that there are thick fabric flaps that lay over the zippers to give protection and a little insulation which is awesome. But the problem is because the flaps are so thick and of good quality they also protect the zippers from your hands. It's impossible to zip together with gloves on, which means in freezing weather you will be wrestling these things bare hand. With all that said, I would still buy this top again because it fits my application so well. Mainly protecting my dog and gear from the sun, and dust, and providing shelter when I sleep out of the bed. And it folds down and goes away when I need the bed for hauling large objects like lumber, furniture, etc. Thanks for watching.

How does your dog handle the heat in the bed? I want to get one so I can take my dogs on camping trips, but am concerned the bed would get to hot in summer.
@keepercity
@keepercity 3 года назад
If he is riding back there and the weather is hot either the back window comes off or the back and both side windows are coming off. There are some trails I run where the dust is really fine and gets everywhere, so when I have my dog AND gear with me on a trip, and I want to keep my gear dust free but also shelter my dog, he rides in my backseat. I have a canvas dog cover for this situation that I keep stored under the seat. I've only had to do this twice, usually my dog and gear are good back there with just the top up and the windows zipped off. In the winter windows are on and he is nice and warm back there. Hope this helps.

I've gone on multiple day trips into the mountains during rain and it has kept things bone dry on the inside. I do mention in the video that for some reason when i have the truck parked in my driveway for more than a few days of rain, there is something about the angle my truck will sit at that will create a spot on the top of the canvas that will eventually pool water up and eventually it will seep through if I leave it long enough. Hope this helps.

@@OrganizedMud try playing with the adjustment levels on the rails. If you have ut set where the middle cross bar is not level with the front crossbar, you can create a sag in the middle of the top that can create pooling. The back window is definitely a pain. If Bestop was smart, they would really work on improving the way that back window opens and closes. It would be awesome if there was a good way to close the back window while you were inside the bed of the truck. Overall, how do you like this top? Would you buy it again?
@leetgif
@leetgif 3 года назад
@@keepercity I’m okay with for now. The side windows keeps coming undone from the top sliding clip/rail. Back window comes undone front the top every time I open the back window. Only thing the Best top has over the soft topper is that there is space between he can and camper, thus your able to see the third brake light 💡 inside the truck bed. I would recommend buying one on the used market for a few hundred bucks and if you like the the idea of having a camper shell buy a hard top. My 2 cents.

Are you able to close the tale gate and back window from the inside? From your video it looks like you wouldn’t be able to close and zip up the back window if the tale gate is up. Let me know because I am considering one of these for camping but if you can’t fully close it from the inside I will have to go with the Softtopper.
@keepercity
@keepercity 2 года назад
It's possible to close it up and get in but it is a little awkward. What I do is I get the metal bar of the bestop hatch locked in place and leave one of the zippers about 6" unzipped. Then I have to get into the bed of the truck ducking under the closed bestop hatch and I lift the tailgate up, stick my hand through the 6" open zipper and close the tailgate. then just reach and zip the zipper down. You have to leave a little gap so you can reach out and open the tailgate to get out. It's a bit of a pain and I designed a mod that will make it easier, and the softtopper hatch is easier to operate, but I needed the windows that the bestop provided. hope this helps.

@keepercity
@keepercity 3 года назад
Not for sure about this, but I do believe I have seen this style of top on a gladiator on the road recently, but I do not know who the maker of the top was. As to which is better, the bestop or softopper, I think it depends on your needs. If you plan to transport dogs or would prefer windows, and you like the look of the black frames as opposed to the chrome/silver frame, I would say go with the bestop. If you are more interested in keeping things sealed up, with no light or eyes coming in, and you don't mind the silver frame, go with the softopper. I will also mention that the softopper is much easier to open up than the bestop. The bestop is an absolute pain to open up, or remove the side windows. But if you plan to sleep out of it like I do, and prefer windows, go with the bestop. Hope this helps.

The zippers are easy to fasten once they are together so lubricant isn't the issue. It's the actual process of bringing both sides of the zipper together that is a PITA.
