Beta64 - Yoshi's Island 

If you're playing a Japanese copy on a us SNES, the cart might be thinking its a pirate copy, which is why it's erasing itself. Earthbound does something similar.

You can tell this was Miyamotos passion project. There is so much love and care put into this game that I haven’t seen since in any Mario game. The backgrounds are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in any game.

I think I know why the developers put a star on Raphael the Raven. Raphael the Raven's death animation is him turning into a constellation star in the sky. You see the star in the middle of the constellation. They probably put the star on him to make it visible when he died, but made sure it was invisible when he was alive by making it the same color as his body.

Could I just ask, what is everyone's problem with Yoshi's Island DS? I felt that there was nothing wrong with it, It is exactly the same style as the old Super Nintendo one.

The humor was fine. Everyone saying "don't try to be funny" can screw off, it's his channel, and he's still giving interesting information. It's nice to see a you have a sense of humor. I guess most people would rather you act like a robot.

*To everyone complaining about his skit/jokes:* Let me remind you that this is HIS CHANNEL, so he can do what he likes with it. Though YOU may not have found the skit interesting/funny, others may have. And throughout the quiz skit, he was still explaining things about the beta, and providing useful information, so I don't know what the fuss is about. On top of all that, the skits aren't even the majority of the video. Wow, people are so impatient.

it seems to me with the tree and mushroom they tried to implement stealth, and it didnt work so they got canned this might be a bit of a stretch but imagine this a section where you have to sneak past enemies to get past (maybe like the sign guys in yoshi's story so you can't just jump over them?) if they spot you, they smack you back to the beginning of the stage, but if you have the transformation and stand still, they don't notice you, so you can move past when they turn around i dunno maybe i'm overthinking it, i can't imagine anything else they could be used for since mushrooms and trees don't particuarly have any interesting abilities (and the mushroom has a sprite where it's just a mushroom, which gave me the idea)

I will always remember when my mom gave me this game as a birthday present! Surely was the best gift ever!

You absolutely don't need humor.

The Super FX chip could be defected. I had my game delete my save files. Tested the battery voltage it was just fine. It would boot but for some reason when you get to the spinning cylinder or the falling doors it would freeze the game.

well since you own the physical copy of the game, just download the rom and use it on the sd to snes or an emulator. since you own the game, it is legal

As far as the problem goes, a bootlegged copy of yoshi's island for GBA that i have does a similar thing (deletes my save files)

SECRET LEVEL 6-9 eh?

This is hands down my favorite Mario game ever. I got it at a flea market somewhere around 1999 and have stuck to that statement ever since. The control is amazingly fluent and spot on which enhance the game play to max. So there is no blaming the controller on this game. People use to complain about the baby and yeah.. it might be annoying. But when you master the game you rarely loose the baby long enough for him to cry. Anyway, great video. I really enjoyed some development on the backstory of one of my all time favorite games ever.

5:28 Thanks for walking us through that joke... Also, why do you explicitly mention Mario not being on Yoshi's back on the skiing sprite? They are 2 separate objects, so of course they don't occupy the same sprite.

Remember playing this at a friend's house, along with the DKC trilogy, when I was young. His mother sadly passed away before my 11th birthday and the memories I had there and at another friend's house during my preteen years, were timeless! I grew up with the SNES at the first friend's house and then the N64 at the second friend's house. It was between 1993-2003 where I had my childhood at both friends' houses. The second one was during the Pokemon craze of 1998-2001 and I'll never forget the time I saw the first Pokemon movie in theaters! I remember almost getting lost and crying because I couldn't find the family I saw the movie with. Thankfully I found them. I'm so glad I grew up in the 90s!

Are you sure your yoshi island cartridge isn't a bootleg? Bootlegs don't always keep saves

that baby mario crawling sprite is because in the beta version, when getting hit by an enemy, mario would crawl instead of floating in the bubble

I know that it's been a while since you've asked why the cartridge does this, but I remember encountering the exact same sort of problem when I was tilting my F-Zero cartridge once. This cartridge would always, always boot up and still does, but after a specific cartridge tilt that removed all options from the title screen, turned the screen black and white, froze the game and stopped the music entirely, it took me 3 to 4 different times to get the cartridge to boot. I feel that there is an internal connection error occuring with your Super Famicom version of Yoshi's Island...I wouldn't be able to figure out which pin it is for you as I'm no sort of expert on computer architectures or wiring for electronic devices, but if you were to have a friend that's good with said situations open the cartridge and do a full checkup of all pin integrity on both chips and connector, it would most likely explain it. Sure, a permanently flashed chip can have data loss of it's own over time, but extremely few cartridges for any cartridge-accepting console have approached such a fate just yet.

You're not alone. My Yoshi's Island cartridge liked to delete my saves too. It happened rarely, but it was really frustrating when it did that after I had finally gotten 100% completion.

I remember playing Yoshi's Island on the SNES classic edition nonstop! Those were some really good times

The star on Raphael was likely to assist in his death animation. After being defeated in the final version, Raphael spins and flies around before becoming another of the constellations in the background. The lone star that forms said constellation is in the exact same position. :3

I think the unused Mushroom Transformation was like a disguise allowing Yoshi to not be able to be seen by Enemies at the push of a button.

I can't find this video on beta 64's channel. Odd...

You can fix it by setting it from Mario to wumbo

Fun fact: Remember those jumping bird enemies with masks from Super Mario Bros. 2? They were meant to appear as enemies in this game along side the Shy Guys but were scrapped.

Baby DK's head looks really weird in my opinion lol I'm so glad that was taken out for sure.

It was interesting re-watching this having also watched streams of people playing an actual beta build from the gigaleak. It answers a few of the details here, such as the crawling baby Mario sprite. In the beta, Mario never went into a bubble when you got hit, but instead fell to the ground and crawled around until you pick him back up. Enemies would also pick him up and try to run away with him too. The crawling around glitches out sometimes though, so maybe the developers just found it too hard to debug this mechanic for all situations and went with the bubble instead because a floating bubble doesn't have to take the various terrain (or lack thereof) into account. The racing mini-game map has also been shown to be a game with two carts going along the tracks, and Yoshi transformed into a helicopter using a hook to collect eggs from the bandit's cart and drop them into the other cart, which is being ridden by baby Mario.
