Love Betanzos!!! First time I went to Betanzos I was 10 years old. It was in 1968 and it was market day. First time I tried the Teta Gallega cheese. At that time I fell in love with the Galician accent and was proud to understand Galego. Been back another 3 times back to Betanzos as the old town is so interesting. Happy to see that they have respected the old part of Betanzos, but surprised to see the outskirts with blocks of flats.... normal but not very nice. Thanks to take me back on a memory trip. Can still the Gallega farmer dressed in her traditional.costume wearing albarcas (clogs). Also remember that all the food producewouldbe difficult to sell forso-called sanitary reasons.

Very nice video of a very nice town and I might add, many residents of this town found their way to central Florida, EEUU. in the late 1800's and early 1900's to work in tobacco factories. Many of their decendents became well known such as acclaimed New York Writer, Jose Yglesias (THE GOODBYE LAND). In that period many of these folks from small aldeas were suffering from shortage of food and farming was exgremely difficult, hence migration to USA, Argentina, Cuba and Mexico.

I have been to galicia , it is beautiful, we went to o,grove a small Pueblo. Very friendly and really clean . Very reasonable prices to . Loved it , we sailed to Santander and drove down through cantabria , fantastic scenery! Would definitely go back .

Fantastic video Stuart.What a lovely place this is.. So much to see and so clean. As much as would love to experience this in person, I think I would end up being carted off on a stetcher.😂 Far too many steep hills for me to manage. Shame the fish market was closed. I would have loved to have seen all the wonderful fish and mariscos that Galicia has to offer. Thanks very much for sharing this experience with us and I very much look forward to your next adventure. Un saludo.

Hello Stuart ,I'm enjoying these videos as l cannot visit even though l live in Spain, most interesting so much history in those buildings ,l had noticed how grand the road surface looks very old tiles l guess, good they have kept traditional materials to maintain the look and history . Stu, Betanzos is a prosperous overnight-stay town on the Camino Ingles from Ferrol to Santiago, one of the oldest but shortest Caminos....I stayed there en-route in June 2021. Lovely place, also famous for authentic tortillas, indeed, I think there is some sort of competition every year.

Great video Stuart, thanks. I’ll be in Galicia next week visiting relatives that live in an aldea near Santiago. If you were still there, I’d take you around to see the 4 houses, one is the house my father grew up in in early 1900’s, the church, the fields and of course, the cows.

What a pity Stuart that you passed by, just to the right of that supermarket that you see at this moment 05:43 is the Rabizas bakery, perhaps the oldest still open in Spain, dating back to the 17th century. Maybe next time.

I was in Betanzos the week before, walking the Camino Inglés (Ferrol to Santiago). I love Betanzos it's such a pretty town. Thank you for the video.

Liked. As many of the other comments here, I have made a visit around 20 years ago to Galicia, and it made a great impression. Went to A Coruna, Santiago, and up to Cedeira and to the top at Cabo Ortegal. Would go back in a flash. I am sure Galicia, and indeed Spain, has many such hidden spectacles, so I would encourage you to keep these wonderful videos coming, Stuart. Best wishes.

Thanks for this insightful presentation. This town seems a little hidden gem. The church ⛪ Santa Maria de Azougue, you mentioned a piece of art above the door 🚪, it is called a " tympanum" depicting the last judgment. Nice romanesque style is that church.

Stuart, Thank you for this lovely walk about. Betanos is a clean and historic small city. It is good to see the Council’s investment into the infrastructure. The architecture of some of the older edifices is really interesting. Did there look to be an array of active businesses in those storefronts? While the renovation of infrastructure in the cascos historicos is necessary, I think it is a pity that the old setts are often replaced with slab paving. I get that there are budgetary restraints, but it does rather change the ambience.

My father is a shoemaker and every time the council changed and old stone paviment for a new one he was happy because more money arrived home. Women broke their heels in the new ones. Those stones for pavements were shaped with an angle since ancient Rome and architecturally a pavement was like an arch to support weight, like the stones making up the arch in the door that appears in the video. New pavings are not like those and have to be changed every 10 years or so because they can't withstand weight. And they are heel-brakers. Sorry for the digression

Very nice town, bit too much graffiti, but that's Iberia. Architecture very similar to the Minho area of northern Portugal which borders Galicia.

Why do you seem to always pass comment about Graffiti on this channel? This particular video published did not show any on statues, churches or council buildings. Noted some on signs of obras/works notice and where the Rio was. What's your solution for eradicating it, or do you think it's a society problem? Regards.

Ferrol is Francisco Franco's home town. Are there any reminders of him? I wonder. Perhaps he was kinder to Galicia than other regions.

Not really. My uncle was put in a concentration camp after the Spanish Civil War, for being the equivalent of a shop steward in the merchant marine. He often said he had a first rate education from intellectuals incarcerated with him. It was not unusual for someone picked out and executed without cause. Also .... other notables ..... Fidel Castro's family origins are from Galicia.
