The latest part of my series "Beth Harmon vs. IRL Beth": facing the strongest version of Beth ever, at age 22, rated 2700 -- just a couple of hundred rating points above my peak rating... No big deal! xD
◾ Part 1 is here (young Beth): • Am I the real life Bet... (It also features what I think of The Queen's Gambit and where the name "IRL Beth" comes from.)

Who, what, where is the Beth Bot? Is it just a name for a machine one of her crew used, to play against her? Sorry, I'm new here. I'm 74, been away from serious chess since the high school chess club, in 1964. I'm saddened the notation has changed.

Beth Bot is a formidable opponent! I am not experienced with chess, so I don't see what Beth Bot is plotting, but.. I think that's the point! Even an experienced player can't see. I see that one of this bot's biggest strengths is setting up lots of options (or knowing lots of options?) without making obvious moves to telecast. Beth Bot has options on the table and can be dynamic along multiple lines, lots of backup plans and a good sense of which to execute at a given turn. But many are sneaky and look pretty innocent. (Or I'm reading too much personality into an AI!) Good match, and very entertaining/educational to see someone step through these moves! Thank you! I want to start playing now, I think.

I was hoping you could get some co-ordination for the queen and knight - it reminded me a little of a blindfold game I had decades ago when my opponent had pawns on h6 and g7, king on f8 and queen on f6 and resigned when, with my queen already on d7, the game ended Ne6+ Kg8, Qe8+.

I'm sure you've explained it at some point, but how do ratings work? Thanks for your awesome content!
@marcosc9130
@marcosc9130 3 года назад
For Official FIDE ranking there is a method where they give or take points for your rating based on the rating of your adversary, and/or average performance in case of titles (an IM has to perform a certain number of points in a competition against IM's and GM's to get a norm and be able to one day become a GM, but that's another more complicated story) but overall that's pretty simple, let's say you are 1500 rating and you play an open event, an for some reason you are able to keep playing till you face Magnus Carlsen himself on the final, considering the huge gap between you obviously you are expected to get destroyed, so you are likely not losing any rating in case of defeat and getting a ton if you win or draw, in his case he will get a huge blow if loses (enough to probably just take him from the top spot of #1 rated player.) Of course real life is less dramatic, and usually the pairings are evenly done so the game is as close to 50/50 it could be, but it happens sometimes that players from very different ratings play each other, like Magnus against that kid recently, that's why also no one ever broke the 3000 Rating yet, cuz once you are #1 you get less and less rating even if you keep winning, cuz the rating difference means you are likely to win anyway, even if you're playing the #2 ( I believe Magnus was 40 points-ish above Caruana once, so for ratings purposes that's a lot, and so as crazy as it looks, he would get just shy more than nothing for every win against anyone in the world, since his rating was high enough that no match was considered close to 50/50. That's what makes Bobby Fischer difference of 125 rating from #2 highest astonishing, since the gap ratio one has to perform to even stay on the current rating is crazy, since this difference is almost what makes IM and GM's apart, it will never be done again. TL;DR: There is a mathematical formula where they put Player 1 rating vs Player 2 rating and use to the difference to determine how much each win/lose in case of win, draw and defeat.

Around 58 minutes in i was gonna say after Qg6 and with the expected response Qh1+, you couldve moved your king to g4 to stop the queen from moving to h5 and gotten the perpetual check. Though the likely h pawn response to the g4 move would cause a lot of headache. A preemptive King to g4 then to f5 while leaving the queen alone would've opened up some interesting options too, with your king protecting the eventual Qg6 check. Kg4.h5 or maybe a black Qd1, your knight prevents the queen check after f5, the a pawn promotion wouldn't have been fast enough to respond to this. A black pawn g7 move would stop the advance of the king but would make the perpetual check even easier. Feel free to point out some errors here I'm pretty new and most of my learning comes from watching this channel lol.
