We are so fortunate to have Gordon Brown as our Prime Minister during the financial crisis. He flew around the world to get global agreement from world leaders to stabilize the markets. A giant that we are indebted to for his commitment. Times were better under Labour, and they will be again...

@davecross4493
@davecross4493 Год назад
@@stevenhull5025 While Gordon Brown could have sold at a better price (he is not a soothsayer), for the vast majority of governments across established economies, there is no real point to holding gold. The purpose of foreign exchange reserves is not for the state to manage wealth on behalf of the country. People should do this for themselves. UK reserves should only really be used to underpin monetary policy, and to halt any possible crisis such as a significant run on the pound, not as any kind of sovereign wealth fund. The trouble is that gold is not well suited as a state asset, as its value is very likely to drop as soon as it is deployed as a government intervention mechanism. The market is of course very different to that of two decades years ago, and any government selling today will not have anywhere near the same impact. But this doesn’t change the cold hard truth that gold is a market best fit for sophisticated speculators, not the state.

At the time Brown (despite his impressive intellect) made a few clumsy gaffs that cost him a lot of 'popular' and media support. He also (IMO) made a serious mistake, and lost significant authority, in Scotland during the indy ref by standing alongside people that were less than credible. But in saying that, he was always a great and respected political thinker and strategist, and by all accounts a genuinely good and compassionate person, and we could really do with someone of his quality now - regardless of political party, but TBH I don’t think there are any people with his gravitas in government anymore, especially in these populist times - a great shame really.

If Tony is free to walk around then why should Putin face justice. It’s logical to ask this questions. When we see all humans as equal perhaps then we can talk about justice. The national trust have now withdrawn concessions required by primary legislation for the 1.8 circa severely disabled and blind who wish to visit these national heritage houses. The national trust was originally set up to allow access for the nation of the national heritage.Recent years they have taken on too many liabilities and have seen a drop in numbers of visitors to the sites. This as a trust gets tax exceptions for the public good the trust brings to all UK citizens. It is argued that they exclude the poorest in society and ignore primary legislation for access of the severely disabled they are in breach of their charity status. They are effectively a commercial organization which no longer qualify for taxpayer exemptions as a trust. The choice to the organization is to comply with the legal rules concerning the status of a trust and concessions.Or simply change their tax status to a commercial organization and pay full corporation tax.There are believed to be some twenty percent of charities who are commercial organizations in the UK sheltering as charities which are in fact commercial organizations. The voters are up in arms about this change and want the charitable status withdrawn immediately and full corporation tax paid to the treasury as a result.

Gordon Brown PM boasted to Gillian Duffy that he had reformed the welfare state and the poor could no longer live on his 'New Deal'. Gordon Brown is a son of a Govan clergyman, he's not a Fifer and he's not someone similar to the Duke of Fife, he's from the peasantry and just too clean for his boots.

He is a rare person who is wicked smart but has human emotions. A rationalist with the right level of compassion. I genuinely believe about 70% of the UK would vote for Labour if there were more people like GB in the party.

I think Boris does think long term, but not in the interests of the people, only of his party and their long term self serving agenda's which they push through in the background while scandals and wars etc provide a smoke screen to hide it all behind.

@@scooby1992 Agree, he thought he was the chosen one. But any Tory PMs policies stem from the partys one ideology and their goals of preserving power for themselves via cronyism, donors , electioneering, deceiving the public to hide the true picture about poor ethics and standards etc, which is why the next one who takes over can't be any different from Johnson and won't bring positive change and will just go after the most vulnerable in society and "level up" the rich and powerful even more, like all predecessors.

I think Gordon Brown was under instructions that in no circumstances was he to mention *Brexit,* or rejoining the *Single Market* or the *Customs' Union.* Brexit is the elephant in the room, and a large part of the reason why, with the exception of Northern Ireland, the UK economy has stalled. The UK is the worst performing economy amongst all developed nations with the exception of Russia, which has economic sanctions imposed upon it. Brown is well aware of this. Brown (rightly) campaigned Remain in the run-up to the 2016 EU Referendum and if it wasn't for Keir Starmer ruling out both rejoining the SM and the CU, and even ruling out Freedom of Movement (FoM), then Gordon Brown would have been as vociferous against the damage that Brexit is doing to the nation as other Remain campaigners such as Michael Heseltine, John Major, Chris Patten, William Waldergrave, etc.
