BETHNAL GREEN - AUTHENTIC East LONDON. Old Fashioned Pubs, Traditional Pie ‘N’ Mash

Bethnal Green is in an area of East London. Historically, the area was run down and considered one of the least desirable areas to live in London due to the lack of aesthetic appeal and high crime rates. These days, the area is considered safer and has gentrified somewhat with the influx of upmarket restaurants, bars and hotels. It even boasts a two Michelin star restaurant, Da Terra located off Cambridge Heath Road.
In recent years, young professionals and trendy types have been attracted to the area due to its relatively lower cost of housing, close proximity to central London and popular hangouts nearby including Shoreditch, Hoxton and Columbia Flower Market.

In the video, we focus on showing you the area within a short radius around Bethnal Green Station including the high street, Pie ‘n’ mash - a traditional East London staple, council estates, the infamous Blind Beggar pub frequented by the Kray twins in the 1960s, shops, cafes and eateries.

I'm actually Irish (My dad was a Londoner) but I lived in Bethnal Green for much of the '90s. Hasn't it changed??!! I don't mind saying, watching this video has been, as Bullet Tooth Tony would've said, 'emotional'! Clear signs of gentrification here, lol! There used to be a lot of graffiti when I lived there but now it's gotten *completely* out of hand... so to speak, I mean I actually quite like it, tbh. Used to be, the amount of graffiti was a measure of how urban an area was (tower blocks, chavs, junkies, The Sweeney). Now it's a measure of how 'Urban' it is (note capitalisation, quotation marks..! ie, directly proportional to the amount of *vinyl* record shops, barber shops where you won't see change out of a fifty, chi~chi, avocado - toast - serving cafFAYs, and ears you can poke your finger through!) Clearly, much of the graffiti was written/painted in broad daylight. That would 'not have flown' in the Bethnal Green of yore, you would have got your a7se kicked! (Do it on the wrong premises, youd've been left for dead!) -so, unless Repton Boxing Club has been finishing off the training of some of these graffiti types... That mysterious Allen & Hanbury factory in the one~time industrial estate near the (overground) station appears to be a hotel now. Back in the 'day', one would sometimes encounter the odd brasser in some of the back lanes around the area (occasionally of indeterminate sex!), Certainly, crack and other hard drugs were to be had in the area; but remarkably, it doesn't appear to be *that sort* of hotel! Funny though, I always thought that funny 2 - storey structure plonked on the top there, probably housing for the winch machinery for the lift and/or a water tower, would make a *great* penthouse, and in all probability that is now what it is! It rather looks as if the 'avocado toast' joints have put the run on the workshops of the panel beaters etc from under the arches... One wonders where, now, are bank robbers meant to repair to for the 'divvy~up'! (Joking of course - a reference to the episode from that great noughties Channel 4 programme, 'The IT Crowd', which I rather suspect was filmed in the area). Interestingly the greasy spoon places and, in particular, the pie & mash places (what's *in* that liquor?!) which, even in the 90's, I feared would soon be a thing of the past, have hung on well! And I thought the threat, such as it was, was from the picture - menu, 'Burger, Chipsanna - Drink' places, I never figured that 'Tuna~Melt' joints would ever be a feature on the landscape! Re~purposed industrial estates and the ubiquitous graffiti aside, the Three Colts Lane (5:20 - 5:50 approx.) seems to pretty much as I remember it. Same garage, same barber, same caff, it's almost like it's an inner city conservation area or something! (Is it??!) Finally, and sorry for striking a bum note, but any area as lively (or as 'lively') as Bethnal Green is gonna see it's share of the old yellow, Met. "Seeking Witnesses" signs, but the 3 Colts Lane footage reminded me of one murder that was a little different to your usual gangland shooting, or "words were exchanged" fracas - outside - nightclub - gone - wrong incident; the dreadful murder of a perfectly harmless little old lady, already deeply in the throes of Alzheimer's, at her home in the local sheltered accomodation 'facility', by some 'squirming brain' monster in one of these 'push~in' robberies. The reason that it particularly made an impression on *me* was that my granddad was a resident in the building at the time; but it is known that her death was *particularly* violent, even as these things go... As there doesn't seem to be any reason *not* to remember the lady's name here, it was Mary Lazenby; the Fuzz, to give them their due, *did* put a lot of effort and resources into the case, but sadly the investigation is no further along today than it was 20~odd years ago, at least as far as *I'm* aware. Anyway, for those that managed to hold out 'til the end, sorry if I went a bit overlong on this!

Respectfully, there doesn't seem to be much housing to be seen at 8:17 ... 4:17 , perhaps?

I stayed here in 2016 for a work visit with CQC. Went to the Salmon and Ball and thought that the name was 'modern' like the 'Slug and Lettuce' etc. Had no idea of the history or the two poor guys hanged outside in public. Great area thanks.
