What blows my mind just watching this interview... the stars from long ago seem to be way more humble, relatable, and authentic compared to Hollywood today.
Ben: Good point. Hallmarks of prior generations were humility and modesty. Most of the true Golden Age stars didn't come from a pampered upbringing - they are endured and I think were appreciative of any good breaks that came their way: Bette, Joan Crawford, Cary Grant, Charlie Chaplin, Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Ginger Rogers, etc.
@@AstralPixie I think it speaks volumes she wanted to raise her kids in the same modest environment she was raised in. You can tell she really appreciated hard work and putting in the effort for her kids to have a normal and rather strict upbringing. That generation was raised to believe you have to put in hard work, and if you do you will get rewarded. In the Golden Age of Hollywood you showed up, and if you put in the effort you would be a star. It was where dreams were made. That is not really as true anymore to the same extent. The celebrities in our culture increasingly come from more privileged and less modest backgrounds.
I love Bette Davis!! We will never have another actress this good . They can’t make two of the best!! She was absolutely amazing. I love everything about her.
Says a lot about you. She aborted two innocent lives. Have fun living in some fantasy world and I’ve had conversations with her daughter, B.D. You have no clue
I can't say ....or can't even put into words how much I admire this woman. She saw right threw that BS question about being a stubborn mule and got right to the heart of the answer wth sharp clarity. Fkn brains and brawn (tongued) and iron will. You can't help but be in awe of Bette.
People will argue and what not, however you cannot deny that someone like Bette Davis had that "Something" that made her unique and interesting and memorable.
I think Bette respected Mike's toughness and that he didn't defer to her as most people, men and women, did and she generously and honestly answered every one of his questions. This is one of the most honest of her interviews that I've seen. She doesn't pull any punches nor sugar coat the facts of her life and her attitudes. Also, she reveals her softness and vulnerability along with her toughness here which makes her very relatable and even endearing. Great job!
I saw this interview in Dallas Texas summer 80 in a bus station with twenty-five cent per so many minute tv on my way back to Michigan from Austin. Mezmorized, was I. My Heroine!
I remember as a child being fixated when a Bette Davis film was on television. She was no great beauty but she had an undeniable screen presence that has never been matched. You simply could not take your eyes off her. Had Joan Crawford not been so jealous Bette would have won the Oscar for Baby Jane. She deserved it.
After seeing this interview, I have grown more respect and pride for Ms. Bette Davis than I ever felt for her before. I adore her frankness and honesty. It is refreshing and inspiring. I love that she said she would “play anything”. That the physical appearance should not keep someone from choosing a part. What an example. Rest in Peace Beautiful Davis.
Aside from her phenomenal talent, I bet Bette was a hoot and a half to hang with. When l have been asked that question about who you’d invite to dinner party alive or dead, Ms. Davis always tops my list.
When she was working on a film with the Scottish actor, Gordon Jackson, she mentioned that she enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. He bought her a circular one and as she unwrapped it, she barked "Its a round jigsaw, what in the hell are you trying to do to me? I demand straight edges!" but finnished sweetly with "But Thank You kindly, all the same" He adored her ever after.
And she had a quick mind and a rapier wit. I've seen enough interviews with her, sometimes on evening talk shows, to be convinced that she could more than hold her own in a one-on-one even with such a a bon mot master as Groucho Marx and
Bette Davis is my favorite actress and Meryl Streeps favorite actress. She was professional, amazing actress and didn’t suffer fools. She’s determined…not difficult. Actors have her to thank for the accolades they enjoy today.
Just found The Dick Cavett Show interviews after watching Susan Sarandon portray ger in fictionalized Feud: Bette and Joan. I loved her roles before that very much. Wish more could have been offered to her in her 70's! Our loss, but tells the time of mysogyny.
Bette was a great actress , though not the greatest , if you compare her body of work to Katharine Hepburn's, you can see the difference ! It's very clear that Hepburn was much more versatile, she also could and did play the classics. Thank you
Bette was so very right about parents not being parents, parents who want to be best friends with their children, bid mistake! I miss Bette so very much, RIP
Correction, she never said that? She referenced tremendous blame upon her mother for her strict values placed upon her daughter relative to marriage & sex in tandem. If Bette had her choice it would've been to live together as the younger generation did hence she'd never married 3/4 of her husbands.
Unfortunately Bette words might have revealed what happened. Possibly she gave BD everything and BD became spoiled rotten. One word describes BD...UNGRATEFUL!
After just reading "MISS D AND ME" I have become such a fan and I am enjoying finding interviews and seeking out movies that she has appeared in. She may have been tough but she was truthful.
That book was written by a caretaker that took advantage of her in her old age. No caretaker should ever be in their ward's will except as a small bequest of gratitude. This broad arranged to get most of the estate.
Not the same song, but in accord is Mary Chapin Carpenter's "The Hard Way" in a rousing performance of women at a music awards show. Wonder if that songwriter had known the Bette Davis chosen epitaph!?
This what's been lacking for about 30 years: a real actress and a STAR... for the past decades all we got are one day flies... with some exceptions. When watching the Oscars 25 - .30 years ago (and going back later) people could identify all actors and actresses, directors, etc ... K Douglas, J Wayne, L Taylor, V Leigh, R Hudson, Y Brynner, etc etc etc ...
It's strange hearing B. D. Hyman, Bette's daughter, talk about her mother so graciously knowing that 5 years later she'd write a book, My Mother's Keeper. A fairly damning book about Bette. They'd never speak to eachother again.
Sometimes your children turn against you completely, sometimes you know why, other times not so much. Dont ever assume the children you bare will be loyal, it just doesn't work that way anymore these days of 2022.
Of course she (Barbara) would speak highly of Bette; either she appears on the program, meaning she speaks well of her mother or not appear at all and offend Bette. I am certain that Barbara's back was against the wall.
B.D. Is a bit...odd. She posts videos to RU-vid from her 'ministry' in Charlottesville, Virginia, and a few years ago, she posted a video about witchcraft and said her mother, Bette Davis, practiced witchcraft and that she witnessed her transform into a satantic figure with animal claws and claw at a door in their home. If anyone thought before then that B.D. Hyman might be a reliable source, it may be time to rethink that.
I love the old Hollywood actors of the past. Their personal lives weren't spewing 24/7 on Social Media distracting from their actual talent. Actors/studios controlled public perception and protected their brand. Made it more exciting to go to the movies to see the Stars.
Betty Davis was a real gal because she was not afraid of the truth. It seems to me most people never really know themselves, but Betty did.....she faced reality which I admire.
Miss Davis had more talent for life than most people dream of. Her acting was a gift and the extention of this multi talented , multi dimentional woman. She had it all 😅
Thanks for uploading this. I've never seen it before. I've seen almost all her movies and as many of her interviews as I've been able to find. I found this when I was searching for one of her movies I haven't seen yet. 👍
Bette Davis is my favorite actress she had stage presence and she was flawless up on the movie screen🎉🎉 Bette Davis had those eyes that held you captivated and it made you know who she is🎉🎉Bette Davis had so many acting roles ,because she could play any type of role that they threw at her. That's old Hollywood and she will be reminded long after she's gone 🎉🎉
that song at the end...this woman is the greatest of all time. what an amazing human being. shes a boss. she and Crawford, Garbo and Stanwyck changed the world.
*A good percentage of our lives is spent doing things we loathe. Marvelous! It puts starch in your spine* I miss that we no longer have tough dames like Bette and Joan. DIscipline and manners -- not bad things to prioritize. "Parents are afraid of their children, they're so overzealous about being loved every minute". *Thanks for everything, Bette* P.S. Jeez, "Satan Met a Lady" wasn't that bad.
@@philomalley1510 Say what you like, but Bette Davis wasn't perfectly sane either, and probably abused her children too. Always Bette, always Crawford.
“Sharper than a tigers tooth is to have a thankless child!” Bette gave her so much, a beautiful wedding, even though she thought BD was to young at 17 years old. Bette Davis was an excellent, beautiful actress! RIP
I wish I were born in the 30's & 40's when the world was a very different place, there's nothing like old Hollywood , today's Hollywood can't even compare with the old Bette Davis and Joan Crawford days..
An abvously good actress, but i dont understand what they meant way back by calling her un-sexy looking, i mean just look at the pictures of her on the Magazines at 15.24 !! She looked freaking adorable!😮
E N: If you can’t interpret her cynicism in stating that’s her favorite line of dialogue then you need to rewatch this again. She’s laughing at how empty and stupid the dialogue is.
@@jaykauffman4775: It was not a skiing accident but her role as POW where she injured her back which led the production, which waited for her to recover, to move on. Yes, it was fortunate that Davis did the role as she was excellent and she received the Oscar for she draws you in. However, she was freelancing at this point in her career, Anne Baxter was contracted to 20th Century-Fox and saw this legitimately as an opportunity to move into the leading lady category (she received a Best Supporting Actress award four years earlier for THE RAZOR’S EDGE. Then there was Gloria Swanson in SUMSET BOULEVARD and I think those three split the votes and Judy Holliday in BORN YESTERDAY got it because Eleanor Parker didn’t have enough support for her role in a prison movie (she goes from innocent lamb to tough b***h.
Great actress she had guts they don't make actresses like her these days . She was my all time favourite actress Spencer Tracy being my favourite actor ❤
"Parents n children"....can either be a fairytale or nightmare.....No such thing as a perfect parent...ya make it up as you go along drawing on life experience & prayer.....I have a great/solid relationship with all my children today.....god knows it was one hell of a rollercoaster ride....U cry, U worry, U pray.....but I wld not change a thing...The never-ending saga of parenthood has been the greatest joy!!
I read the book, and relate to how she felt. Unfortunately, their relationship became strained over the following years, then estranged. Odd and sad how that plays out in many families. BD should have waited unti her mother's passing to write the book.
Casually talking about abortion (in 1980 no less) is legendary in itself. Talk about full transparency. Love her or hate her she never shied away from the tough questions.
