@@Dr.SyedSaifAbbasNaqvi I agree with your comment, but I think Bette ascribed too much blame to Crawford for her Oscar loss. Anne Bancroft gave a superlative performance in "The Miracle Worker", and the subject matter was much more profound than "Baby Jane". Hollywood has always liked to reward serious films.
If I'm not mistaken, this is her first public appearance after having fought against a cancer, had four strokes and a broken hip... Nothing could stop the unsinkable, invincibile Bette Davis! What a great woman and artist!
I think that it wasn't the strokes nor the cancer that killed her . But it was the lies and betrayal of her daughter. When she wrote that horrible book about Ms. Davis which lead to her dieing
*insert tears streaming down my face here* I may only be 22, but I'm such a fan of Bette. I really wish I had the honor to be alive during the same time as her...let alone meet her...even if it was only for one year of our lives that crossed paths. Thank God we still have her AMAZING work on film. (Side note, I would have LOVED to be in a room with her and just talk for hours! I honestly feel like I would be able to play off of what she says and just appreciate having someone else with the same sense of humor (or whatever you want to call it) to talk for hours with (assuming I would have had the chance) ♡ *wipes away tears*
she looks pretty good here! My favorite actor ALWAYS - The GREAT Bette Davis! The stroke and cancer didn't slow her magnificent mind one tiny bit. She is what a legend is all about. I miss her very much.
WHAT A TROOPER...AFTER ALMOST DYING FROM A STROKE, THIS LADY MADE A FANTASTIC APPEARANCE AT THE AWARDS...THE STROKE TOOK ITS TOLL...BUT SHE WAS STILL DEAD ON...MISS HER....
I remember how as a little kid I used to spend time with my grandparents in the Caribbean. They had only one television station on the island, and they used to show one of the really old Hollywood movies every Sunday afternoon. They called it the Sunday Matinee. As a kid growing up in a culture that didn't focus much on these classic films, I was the odd one out in my family who took a liking to them, and Bette Davis was one of the first actresses I remember from those movies. She was one of a few from that time who are simply unforgettable. Some people are just bigger than life, and she certainly was.
Bette died three years after this appearance in France. Other celebrities that have also died in France are Jim Morrison, Anthony Bourdain, Olivia De Haviland, Oscar Wilde, Josephine Baker, Marlene Dietrich, and Princess Diana.
Her ironic look when she says, “But everyone knows how mean I am” was very touching to me. This was a few months after her daughter’s vile book was published. It makes me glad that book was never reprinted by the publishers and got consistently bad reviews. Bette’s own success and incredible reputation had the last word.
It's interesting that Bette's opening remark is about missing applause from an audience. In one of Bette's most famous films, Eve Harrington says applause is "like waves of love coming over the footlights and wrapping you up".
I went to see an evening with Bette at the London paladium many years ago but although we had opportunities to speak to her via a roving Mike I sat with my mouth open staring in awe the entire time magnificent actress the best of her era xx
Yes, you should standup , applauding, and bowing in front of the queen!! This is someone who loved her craft, more than money, and fought for, her entire life!!
Its a shame people got to get old, isn't it? What else sucks is the fact that people can get better by learning from what people did in the past, but I honestly do not see any actress today that can grab your attention or act with the intensity as Bette.
Bette Davis with her art, has pulled more tears out of my eyes, more heart pounding thrill, more excitement, more pain, more empathy than all others actors combined. I fell in love with her abilities when I watched Now Voyager the 1st of many I have watched and now want more and more. She brought it. Love her.
She made one more memorable film after this appearance, "The Whales of August" with Lillian Gish, Vincent Price and Ann Sothern. And she worked right up to the end, starring in the 1989 movie "Wicked Stepmother." She clashed with the film makers and left the project during filming.
I love Bette Davis so much, ...no one can take an opportunity for her to talk away from her before she's good and ready,...Sidney Pollack was very gracious...lol
It's such a joy to go down memory lane and watch these Oscar clips of years ago. Sadly, today's awards' events are lacking the same elegance and prestige.
Everyone knows of the never ending feud between Bette and Joan Crawford, but there at the last she said the actor she hated working with the most was Faye Dunaway.I guess it was a well kept secret for years .
You won't believe this but I must tell you anyway... On her birthday last year which is the fifth of April, I was then in my kitchen and I was looking high up to the ceiling and said; I wish you a very happy Birthday my dear Bette Davis, I love you and I always will!" And then I saw her arm holding her cigarette appeared in the front of me for a few seconds!!! I was sooo surprised and happy!! It was her sign that she heard my wishes from the "other side of the rainbow"!!! :D I was soooo touched and thrilled that she heard me!!! This is a priceless moment in my life! xox
I remember watching this with my mother that night. And we both thought the color purple was better and should have won. The kiss of the Spider woman is still one of the most underrated movies ever. All hail Betty Davis. 👍🧐💕🏆🇺🇸
