Bette Midler was born and raised in Honolulu. She was 21 at the time "Hawaii" was filmed, and was studying drama at the University of Hawaii. That's how she ended up as an extra in the film.
While working at KGU AM-760 Bette Midler was an extra in the movie Hawaii. Also Ted Scott and Don Dolittle of KGU had speaking rolls in the Hawaii movie. I rented out my surplus DUKW for all the off shore filming of this movie at $100 a week for several months...
Even if Bette Midler was in this film in a brief, uncredited role, I have to point out that there are many testimonies that she is not a nice person to us mere mortals; she expects royal treatment. I read an account online by a retired police officer or security guard in California who said that when he asked her to stop doing something on a film set that was clearly a safety threat (I forget the particular circumstances), she barked back at him, "How dare you! Do you know who I am?" And this same officer said that she wanted no one to speak to her before she spoke first. This is just one testimonial. The fame obviously went to her head.
I know BETTE paid her dues for years as a background singer and actress and it sounds to me like this guy was way out of line ! She was obviously rehearsing and this clown figured he could actually disturb her becouse he thinks he knew better! She is a true gifted artist and if she senses any disrespect you are going to get it.Have ya ever heard the expression YOU DONT GO PULLING ON SUPERWOMANS CAPE !!
A friend carefully viewed his DVD copy of this sequence and got a number of very clear screen shots where Bette was immediately identifiable among the missionaries. I suspect those shots are very brief, though, so at normal speed it's probably hard to find her.
No worries...I found her in this clip and the other I posted where she's a seasick passenger. She's hard to spot because as you said she's an extra. Her costume gave her away. Enjoy!
if you read the description above, I say you can see the back of her as the Queen (visitor) kisses her... I never said that the Queen was Bette at all, merely stating she is in the scene. I know her film creds thank you very much.
@@ccthebrat Thanks Allison ! Now I spotted her right away and it sure looks like a young MIDLER to me !! As a side note,I was underaged but sneaked into the theatre to see THE ROSE and fell in love with her immediately. It was the first time not one person got up to leave at the end as that's when the song THE ROSE is sang as the credits role by!! A beautiful voice and talented actress she really is the real deal !!!
@@jymfysher7704 she is talented -- puts on a phenomenal live show & yes the Rose was fabulous... no matter how many times I've seen it (I missed it on the big screen --due to being 4 lol) but yea.. fantastic. And when we got a chance to meet her she was so nice and kind to us.
Someone posted that bette midler was born in Hawaii. The first article I saw on her in the ny times , bette midler says she was born in paterson New Jersey. I believe when I saw her in Passaic nj, she said the same thing. I guess it didn't fit her idea of a legend because every version of her bio says born in Hawaii. Her extended family was in bergen county nj for years. Not sure if they still are. And their resemblance is very much in evidence. Sounds like streisand's first bio: born in Rangoon, raised in Madagascar.

@@jaytops actually ... after I posted that two years ago I saw her on some interview thing and, sure enough, she copped to it and they actually did freeze frame it with an arrow pointing to her. And I mean it was super fast. So anyway I stand corrected.
i apologize; but your narrative did give the impression that the Bette was a major player in the film. It was obviously my misreading of your text. i am sure you DO know her creds very well if you were aware she was in this old film. i am a fan of Bette's, so no insult to her was intended. Thank you for posting the clip. i saw this movie when it was first released and it's a fave of mine. Please accept my apology for misinterpreting your post.
Her narrative did NOT give the impression that Bette was a major player in the film. That's you not paying attention correctly. I completely understood Allison's narrative and arrived at the correct conclusion which you didn't. Don't blame other people for your mistakes.
THAT is NOT Bette! She was a passenger and uncredited in the film. You are giving the impression that the "Queen" is Bette, and it isn't. You will not actually see her in this clip at all. My goodness! Look up her film creds and you will see that she was an extra in this film and had only one brief scene on the ship, and you'll never figure out who she is because it is likely that she is one of those whose back you see. But she is not the Queen.
