I think this could be a useful video for beginner and advanced artists. I try to show you how I go for various color relationships while modeling. At the same time, I demonstrate how it is I keep them relatively unified so things don't get too crazy.

Thank you for being so generous in sharing your knowledge. You're one of the very few artist who give detailed explanation while doing demo. I've learned a lot about color in portraiture. More power to you!

Love your artwork : so talented. Also, I love your dry sense of humour . Scott, why have you chosen the colours you use in your palette for your portraits? I notice you have no warmer reds or any blue. Thanks for all your help and advice. 👍

I would think no better than I can see with or without my glasses. I'd have to have a magnifying glass to examine these detail colors all alive model. Which wouldn't work for me at all. LOL how on Earth do you do it? Just beautiful work!

So helpful! Thanks Scott for these sorts of tutorials. Definitely gives me some ideas on how to progress in my oil painting. I’m curious - have you ever experimented with using a CMYK pallette for portraits? I’ve recently been experimenting with using primary cyan, lemon yellow, and primary magenta to see how wide of a chroma I could mix through that combination of a limited pallette and been quite surprised... however, haven’t yet tried it for a portrait.
@jorriffhdhtrsegg
@jorriffhdhtrsegg 2 года назад
Didn't find cmyk useful. There is a reason why red, blue,yellow are paint primaries is how paint mixes not necessarily physics and biology....its chemistry of pigment. (That said Y+M is a nice red but do i really want the high chromat magenta? Does magenta even get that high in paint? Isn't it expensive? Its not even a spectral colour with a wavemength Etc! CMYK is a good way to LIMIT chroma. Unless you use printer ink glazes. Mixing lines ARE NOT STRAIGH on a colour wheel.

Excellent work. Truly a Master. But why don't we EVER see talented artists worry about there palette drying? Their mixing is very thin. Mine would dry in 30 secs tops.

Your subject's skin has a ragged texture. Can you discuss why you choose to give your subjects highly smoothed out low texture skin?
@redangrybird7564
@redangrybird7564 2 года назад
That's his style and I think he doesn't realise that his portraits are so smoothed that look like plastic masks. He mentions at the beginning of the video that he has received that same criticism but continues to paint that way. Go figure.

@@redangrybird7564 the work is both impressive and lifeless. Reminds me a lot of late Ingres when he began doing devotional subjects and it became kitch.

@@DrWhom when I started to paint portraits the first advice I read was that the painter should paint the jewelry much larger, the face and body less fat and the skin less wrinkled. So perhaps having a very smooth skin in the painting pleases many older ladies whose prime years are long gone. Nobody likes a portrait that looks like a driver's licence picture, though we know we look exactly like that. Cheers.

For some reason my oil painting always shows the brush strokes no matter how thick or thin i keep my paint, why does that happen? I cant achieve that soft and blended look
@DrWhom
@DrWhom 2 года назад
try a more delicate touch. use an almost dry brush to blend in truth, blending is a bit kitsch-y in fact, you can achieve a highly naturalistic look without any blending - see tips on channel Draw Mix Paint
@StrawberryLegacy
@StrawberryLegacy 2 года назад
What kind of canvas are you using? A painting on a rough canvas will never look as "soft" as one on a fine textured one.
