It's completely digital, so really Dexed is just the synth's FM chip in a portable vst. Crazy how such an iconic piece of gear was able to be captured in a small, free program but, that's technology for you😁
@gasolineandwine
@gasolineandwine 4 года назад
Don't forget about the fact that there are hundreds, possibly thousands of presets from real cartridges of the DX7 available for download and use in Dexed. Hell, some of those files even retain the date they were made, dating back to the 1980's lol
@SianaGearz

@@angh3ll202 Things are never quite this easy. You cannot recreate Yamaha FM just from the chip datasheet, as the datasheet is deliberately a tiny bit vague and incorrect, so while functionally you will have something seemingly equivalent, the patches will not be really entirely compatible, and even capturing the chips with a logic analyser ran into some limitations - for more than 20 years, say Yamaha OPL2/OPL3 and OPN2 were not emulated 100% correctly. Finally some chips were decapitated and die-photographed by enthusiasts, and in a lot of hand work deciphering the pictures, ROM tables were dumped and quirks were discovered - i'm sure Dexed's developers learned from this too, but then the specific chips in DX7 were i believe not subject to the same treatment. I think the total recreation effort needed for these chips was not much smaller and potentially larger than Yamaha originally spent designing them, and i think the reverse engineering efforts will continue!

Get patch base for IPad. Buy the DX7 template for $30. Use an Irig MIDI to your 5 pin in and out. Set the DX7 to YES for midi receive. You can write, store, upload to/from the iPad. It’s unbelievable. Click, drag, move operators however you like. Manipulate envelopes. The program is so good, I bought the template for the Roland D550 as well. Feeling frisky? Install MegaDX7 to double your voice capacity too hehe. Click in a Yamaha BC1 breath controller. Then you will feel the soul of the original.

I've built my own "real-time" controller in Max/MSP using the sysex objects and reading the MIDI implementation doc, and it became apparent that the DX7 just isn't designed with real time in mind. Whilst I could change parameters without menu diving, there is a big limitation in which the sound doesn't update, and even sometimes glitches, whilst tweaking until a new key press happens. It is also sensitive to how much info can be sent at once, to the point where you can actually crash the synth! When making a DX7 controller you must be mindful of a "Sysex received" message that the synth sends back to confirm that the parameter was "digested" and is ready for a another sysex message. That's probably why Dexed lagged a bit because it is waiting for these responses from the synth. Yamaha probably didn't envision real-time control at all at the time as the MIDI spec was not entirely finished during development, so mistakes and lack of foresight was at play, leading to a half baked MIDI implementation as evidenced by the DX7's max MIDI note velocity of 100 rather than 127 (were they high or what lol).
@AudioPilz
@AudioPilz 4 года назад
Or the DX is just underpowered
@georgebarlow754
@georgebarlow754 4 года назад
Some of those issues can be avoided if you went with the DX7IID. Most parameters still don't update untill the next note played, but at least it won't stutter when you do so. The problem of crashing when you overflow the midi input is still there, though. I had to deliberately limit the data flow somewhat to avoid this. Still better than being stuck with menus, though.
@diglet553
@diglet553 4 года назад
@@georgebarlow754 Yeah I figured there was a serial buffer overflow at play because sometimes it would recover without needing to power cycle it. As much as the Mark 2 improves things, I prefer the original for the grittier tone, and for the SuperMax expansion board which adds a lot of nice features to the OS that you can't get in the Mark 2. Plus I prefer the look of the original, but that's just an aesthetic choice haha!

The DX7II lets you set the two data sliders (I guess that’s why it’s the DX7II 😉) to two performance controllers like LFO rate, depth, operator levels, etc. and it seems to be somewhat smoother editing in real time. Between that and several other parameters like setting the mod wheel to control any operator with amplitude modulation on (with a decent depth and fineness of control) you can create some pretty awesome detuning and “filter sweep” tones in real time without any outboard gear needed

Older versions of Cubase with Mixer Maps could do this, add a controller (knob, slider or switch), assign it to a command (controller or sysex parameter) and continue until you had everything you needed. While a sequence was playing, you could tweak the midi mixer in real-time and even set an external controller to do the manipulating of you preferred hardware to a mouse. This had its limitations, but was one reason I had more than one ST in my setup, one for playing sequences, one for manipulating sysex in real-time. If you were careful and had your second system synced with midi clock, you could record manipulations and tweak data so notes were not too jostled. I’d also have to route any MIDI that was to be manipulated through the second system, but that wasn’t as hard as it sounds with proper planning.

I naively attempted to make a real-time controller in Max/MSP back in 2005 at Uni (mature student sadly). I had a DX7 which I used as a controller and a TX7 with me and thought Id damaged my TX7 so stopped. I new about 5% of what I know now so was cautious and just wrote a horrific audiolooper performance tool which took noise from the room and made feedback loops (sounds cooler than it actually sounded, which ultimately ended up being a bagpipe emulator). This has been on my mind since and the last couple of years I\ve been improving my electronics. I got to be honest, this is a really good 'pose the question' vid as it explains the actual problem which I didn't understand at the time. The biggest issue for me was I wanted to 'grab' several parameters at once using translated MIDI CC and its just not up to it. I did wonder about working out what can be done by mapping a MIDI CC to an arduino and altering the breath controller or expression pedal inputs (tho cant for the life of me remember what mod/control possibilities that would offer - only got the TX7 these days).

I use the DAW renoise and the tool called guru (downloadable from the renoise forum) to control the parameters of my tx802. I like the work flow. It also works on my dx7. I still haven't given up on fm synthesis after six or seven years. Also, the dx7 as a midi controlling keyboard is my favorite, I like the feel. One breakthrough for me and the dx7 was when I started assigning volume output levels of the modulators to the modulation wheel. This can act as a sort of filter effect and lends its self to expressiveness

I use the Atari ST emulator Steem and Steinberg's Synthworks to program my Roland D-20. It's infinitely easier than diving through the menus and it helped me find sounds I never would have otherwise. And while I don't own a DX7, I do know there's a ton of Atari ST stuff related to the DX7 as well. Most of it can be found at Tim's Atari MIDI World. However, having said all of that, while you CAN edit patches and hear the changes in real time on the D-20, it's not a suitable method for actually controlling it. I'm sure the same thing could be said about the DX7. So this has me interested not only for the DX7, but also the possibility of doing something similar with the D-20, which could use some extra faders and at least a few knobs. Then I glance over at my ESQ-1 and start having similar controller thoughts! Yes, some knobs would be nice to have for that one as well!

Really nicely done, these deeper dives are pretty unique for youtube content ('bad gear' too, great format!). The yamaha keybeds are really nice imo as a master keyboard but you'll find the velocity values to be weighted pretty low, I filter older yamaha velocity with transMIDIfier (just output to a virtual port post-filter, that way any piece of software you want to use always receives a adjusted curve). You can also use similar programs and virtual ports to convert CC and program changes to SysEx too.

I dont even use the onboard audio hardware just the keys and have a cheap AliExpress Midi Control surface to control the synth virtually. An E! I think software is one area where FM can often beat hardware. I have the reface dx and volca fm but I find software can generally get the nastier or more complex sounds I want, as well as fast and varied parameter access. I'd expect eurorack FM modules to be ahead of software in terms of desired sound quality. I control my hardware FM synths in the DAW. For Volca FM I find the sounds created on dexed sound different when transferred to the volca fm so I use an editor called volcako. You can tweak sounds in real time with no issue and you learn the volca FM really fast. All FM synth behave different
@Aeduo

@@eremiteghost1572 Most FM synth including stuff like the DX7 and OPL/OPN are done digitally, so there's really going to be no difference to software as far as what's coming out of the digital side of the system, but I could see how one could have an appreciation for how the preamps and all that can make the output sound. I definitely prefer a hardware soundblaster for how DOS game music can sound versus how DOSbox tends to sound on a modern PC's relatively clean, less filtered output. Just too tinny and harsh. There can also just be differences in the implementations between different hardware and software devices.

I had Jellinghaus controller but sold it. Problem is not the controller, but DX7 itself. Smooth SysEx real time control is not possible, also because of structure of algorithmic synthesis engine and stepped values. It has no sense to try to change its behavior. Use the instrument the way it allows and which is the best for it. For the smooth real time control we can use other instruments. BTW - those patches in your demo sound (since 3:14 approximately) pretty well! I like bass and lead sound. Could you share the settings? Maybe in FB group?

Respect to the level of effort put in to make this workable ✊ On a serious note (I'll try not to smile), Korg's OPsix should be worth the wait. AudioPilz the Electribe 2. I’ve seen a lot of comments over the years of how limited they are, which is why Korg eventually added a firmware update with a Song Mode, but the most limiting FB aspects seem to be the 4 bar loop limit. And also the fact that the Sampler and Synth models are exactly the same under the hood but are limited in their function, because apparently some people have hacked their e2 and added sampler functions to it. There is also the very limited sample time per pattern for a piece of gear that came out in 2015...

Back in the 80s I had a CX5M (basically an MSX computer with a built-in DX9 synth), but even with the visual programming interface (from a plug-in cartridge that cost extra!) it was an absolute pig to program. When Yamaha admitted that the programmer and sequencer cartridges were fundamentally flawed, they expected users to pay full price again for the new cartridges. The damned thing was a total waste of money and put me off Yamaha for years. (It wasn't even a good MSX computer - it didn't have enough RAM to play most of the games!) There was a DX7 programmer cartridge available for the CX5M. Maybe that worked as advertised... but I have my doubts.

A synth with which truly nothing comes for granted. There are mods for Behringer BCR2000 or BCF2000 that can do the job, but is not intuitive, and also, because of modding, prices got high. It sounds simple enough so I'd make my own using a microcontroller. If you're just using controllers with physical midi connectors then that's all you need but if you want usb midi controllers, you need a usb host shield too. If you tell me which controllers you want to use and what knobs/sliders/etc. should to map to which parameters, I can try making a little prototype. I don't have a dx7 to test it on so I'll leave that to you.
@TaylorTheOtter

AudioPilz depends on how elegant I want to make it. I think I'd go with an ESP8266 for now because it's fast enough to reliably run multiple software serial inputs without having multiple hardware serial ports. Also I have a few spares lying around so that's nice too. I'd be using the Arduino IDE for programming since I've been messing around with midi in there lately so I'm fairly familiar with programming midi in there. If I wanted to make it elegant, I'd find an AVR with enough (hardware) serial ports and program it in pure C to make it run faster and more reliable. My Arduino Mega would work but that one's currently in use in another project of mine so I'd rather leave that one in there. Also it's a 5 volt micro and my usb host (MAX3421E) is 3.3v so if we want usb, that one won't work. Another reason ESP8266 + Arduino IDE (+ USB Host Shield Mini) is nice is that it's all common parts so if I put it on GitHub, anyone can make it. Better still, anyone can improve it. If you don't feel like making it yourself, I could probably send it to you but we'll worry about that when I have a prototype ready to go. For now, do you have any ideas about which controllers you want to use? I mainly need to know if they are usb midi or physical midi. The actual cc mapping can be done later so you don't need to choose the exact device yet. Also, sorry for making you read through all this. I just woke up so I'm too sleepy to make it shorter...

@@AudioPilz I have a working (in theory, that is) version for physical midi controllers. It works with a serial connection at the correct midi speed so I don't see why it wouldn't work with the real thing.
