I am currently wearing a custom Vaughn glove made for Daniel Manzato when he was with the Charlotte Checkers. It is based off a V3 and I have loved this glove since the first time I tried it on three or four years ago. I shoot in the Turco style and have done this for at least ten years or so with many different gloves with what has felt like many different breaks.

Hey Wayne!! Great topic! You should consider the stick you’re using too. I’m not familiar with the brand you’re using but if it’s a lower end foam core like a Passau, it won’t be giving you the proper balance, flex and consistent feel and can really change how, when or if you play the puck at all.

I have always used the Turco grip. For years I used a Reebok XLT, and I could shoot very well. I recently switched to a Factory MAD glove, but since I have, my puckhandling has been noticably bad. I wasn't sure for a while if this was just because I had been switching sticks lately, but now after seeing this it makes sense, because all the Factory MAD gloves are finger to thumb closures. Don't get me wrong, I love the glove, but it is so so hard to get used to a 60° angle

@VOGoalie
@VOGoalie 5 лет назад
Thanks for your Comment! Most gloves have built in palms, subsequently they have a permanent consistent "feel" to them. If you're looking a new gloves, your first priority is typically how it feels to close with your hand and/or how it feels in your glove's positioning in your stance. As a new goalie, it might take a little while for you to actually figure some of this out, so initially, just getting some gear and hitting the ice will help! Thanks for your comment and welcome to the crease!

Have you tryed not using your trapper glove but use your pad to leaver the stick. And flick the puck. I would use that to puck dump. You can get alot of power and height. But some times time wasting penalties. As it may go out of play or hit the roof.

Never considered glove break before. In my experience, the single biggest influencer on my packhandling came from my stick. First, the paddle size, and secondly, the type. For me, there is no better stick than a Bauer (think S2 pro, ultrasonic, even the old vapor XXX). That said, I don't spend $200-300 on sticks anymore but if you have the money, do it. Just beware that they tend to not last as long

1x vapor, overhand. i'm not a fan of it really. i've had it for a couple years now and it doesn't feel like it ever really broke in so it's hard to grip the stick well. also the reason is because its not seamless like the g4 or gt2 gloves so it has restriction in the palm.
@beau6113
@beau6113 5 лет назад
When I was younger I used a Vaughn T 5500 (late 90s model) and was quite a good puck handler using traditional grip. After taking time off I came back and moved into a new CCM EFlex II 860 catcher. I don't know what break angles each one has, but I immediately became a poorer puck handler. I also have significantly more pop-outs with the EFlex. I'm a palm closer and the EFlex feels like more of a finger to thumb. I don't like it, and really want to find a glove that mimics that old 90s Vaughn feel.
@VOGoalie
@VOGoalie 5 лет назад
Thanks for sharing! You're not alone in searching for that Old School feeling! I had a Vaughn Legacy T2000 glove and could shoot so much better with that! I think with gear evolving to be more protective as well as changes in size, goalies who played more than 20 years ago are old enough to remember how much mobility gear of that day had. Sure, we got stingers in our palms and on our arms, but that was just our way of "feeling" the puck to help with rebounds! But I also surmise that back then, gloves were constructed in a way to be more forgiving with the break in process, so you could kinda make it feel however you wanted. Today, everything is so hinged and rigid that there's no changing the feel.

Okay I was waiting for you to create this video. So for a while I was a REGULAR goalie, but a few months back I picked up goaltending again after 9 year hiatus... I was going over basic stick handling with my 3YO with our player sticks, and had an epiphany... question...Why does holding my goalie stick feel so awkward... especially when trying to shoot a puck? So after trying Turco grip/FULL RIGHT I knew I was right, and it's felt so good and natural. It literally matches how I shoot when I'm playing left wing. Literally I feel the same comfort and drive force when I shoot now. I purchased a Warrior Ritual GT (comes with an 70° break angle, and it works!!! Only thing that sucks is locally, and generally most Pure Hockeys or local retailers don't carry Full right gear. So it's always hit or miss... especially with sticks What are your thoughts?

I think most of us righties are comfortable catching with our left hand because we played baseball at some point. And naturally, it feels more comfortable holding the stick with my right hand while in my stance. The trade off though, is shooting left did feel strange at first. But I got better at it as time went on. Also, in my humble opinion, I think having strong stick hand is more important for making saves with an active stick (while in our stance or down in butterfly). Especially since we really only stick handle a few times a game. But again, that's just the trade off I'm comfortable with.
@AnthonyTCarter
@AnthonyTCarter 5 лет назад
@@bratprince11 I found greater comfort in blocking my 5 hole with the stick in my left hand... knowing if I needed to pass it or clear...I could slide it, grip it and fire the puck as I would as a winger or on defense. It just felt like home. LoL I know that's weird 😅

Honestly, I've always preferred a baseball glove type feel, but with the G4, the ability to have a different break angle is actually a really cool feature. @Mystninja

If you try to catch the puck with your eyes. You never will. My old goalie coach told me. Look at the shooters shoulders. And put your glove where you think the puck will be. Over time you just know where the puck is going and it becomes second nature. Try getting a tennis ball find a wall. Put tape a little bit of tape on the wall. You can't move out eyes off the tape. Learn to juggle the ball right hand to the tape to your left hand with out moving your eyes. If you get to doing it with your eyes closed move back or forward and start again. It's not a reflex drill. It's to help knowing where the ball/puck will end up. Even move the tape. But the time the ball leaves your sight you should known it's angle. You'll get more lucky saves. I never tracked the puck. I just get in its way.

I used to be ok at shooting the puck. After finally changing out of my 10 year old Koho 580s, I struggled with my whole setup as everything felt like it was built differently. I got used to some gear but could never catch the puck cleanly again for a long time. So frustrating. I finally found a Kenesky glove I could catch with again but I suck at shooting the puck now. I havent been able to feel comfortable with the Turco grip so I still use a traditional. My struggles with catching the puck were so bad that I would rather not play the puck than give up how well I have been catching lately by going to yet another glove. Maybe some consistent practice shooting will help. Can you really work on goalie puck handling on dry land?
@VOGoalie
@VOGoalie 5 лет назад
Thanks for your comment! I definitely think that off ice practice can be beneficial, but there's always the argument that if you're putting in "incorrect" reps, it will hurt more than help. That being said, just wearing my gloves with my stick, I can shoot pretty good off ice.... It's the addition of my CA, Pants and Pads that make everything so cumbersome these days! What C/A were you wearing with your older Koho gear? You're also right about things being constructed differently now. Some gear feels a little too over engineered (if you are coming from using 90's or earlier equipment). I think as we all age, we end up trading off certain things to retain others. In my case, I'm opposite of you in that m catching/ puck tracking to my glove side is so diminished (don't tell shooters) that maybe I'll just go full Hextall and act like a 3rd defenseman!

I’m not sure why you would want to change your entire catch glove experience (catching), just to be able to stick handle better? Find a glove that suits your playing style and catching comfort, then learn to stick handle with that. There are many ways to hold the stick in a ‘Turco grip’, most people think you need to have the stick running from the bottom crease in the glove, to the point of the T. That’s not the case.

Correct, due to the boot break, different pads can ride higher than others. I know that even within the ccm line up there are differences. Eflex is 34+2 while Premier are 35+1. Always good to try them on at a shop if its available.
@pyryhillosalo

Pad sizes are like shoe sizes, different manufacturers vary from each other. For example 33+3 Sher-Wood is the same as 36+1 Bauer. You should just go try them.
@VOGoalie
@VOGoalie 5 лет назад
Sizing does vary some by manufactures these days. An ATK could easily "fit" in different sizes in different pad makes and models. But generally, if a manufacturer suggests a certain size based on your ATK, as long as you measured correctly, it should fit! Additionally, these days, most pads have some slight leeway with strapping adjustments to dial in the fit. Hope this helps!

Definitely, stick material, size, curve all can contribute to one's stickhandling ability. I think it boils down to personal preference with regards to how a stick performs when making saves and when shooting and how important each is to any individual goalie. And catching felt surprisingly different, time will tell how quickly I adapt. Thanks for asking!
