Thank you for making original videos that no other production RU-vidr is making. I can always count on your vids being something refreshing that I haven't heard about before
I've been using this method for a while (volume control before input to fx). It's particularly cool when you stack and layer multiple racks. Here is a cool use that will give totally wild results using the same principles you describe here: Create an Audio Effect Rack and create multiple chains within it. Each has a different preset/iteration of hybrid reverb (for instance) with a utility before it control 'send' input. Optionally make a clean chain as well. Map the 'send' utility volume to a macro and make sure it is set = min -infdB/ max 0dB. Use some sort of random source (LFO mapping, the Envelope Follower, midi input) and map it to the 'send' volume macro. Have a different random source for each 'send' macro chain. This creates a constantly changing 'send randomizer' effect rack which is super cool for glitches/generating weird sounds and even great for layering quietly with a prominent sound. Obviously this can be applied to any effect and can be used in serial (random rack 1 (reverbs) feeds into random rack 2 (grain delay) etc etc). It's very fun. I think I discovered this independently (at least my weirdo application) when I was doing that generative project last year. Super cool! As always, great video. I have a hankering to make an audio effect rack for grain delay so I can create variations like you use here.
@@matttinklermusic Chain selectors work too, but the abrupt switching can be jarring for some sounds and doesn't work that great for reverbs. However, you can use chain selection randomization for more whacky fx like chorus, phaser and stuff, in that instance the abrupt changes make for really cool drum glitches.
I've been really loving how intuitive it is! :D Yep, done with a stock Ableton compressor with the threshold and the on/off being controlled by the macro. :)
I really like that 'return in a group' trick. It's a new one for me, and I instantly get the racks. But there is still one problem: when I use a delay on a vocal for only one word, I want the delay to go in one of my reverb sends. Unfortunately, this is not possible. The only way is to create a new track with monitoring on input and then choose the wet chain as input. But that's complicated and often disrupts my workflow. I would really like to find a good workaround that is 'preset-able'.
Hmm, I think the best way is probably what you mentioned, but I might be able to think of another way. You could probably set up an audio track with the routing to the return track already set up and then simply load it up from the browser, you'd still have to set its input from the vocal though. I guess the racks aren't really designed for that and mostly designed as a way to be able to use spatial effects as inserts a bit better. Definitely aren't a replacement for return tracks (I absolutely still use return tracks). Thank you for watching! :)
@@matttinklermusic Yea, that's not a bad idea. And you're right, returns are still necessary. I need to highlight that your racks are definitely a great way to break through the limitation of 12 return tracks. However, I would like to see Ableton integrate a function that makes it possible to send signals from separate 'in-a-rack chains' to the global returns, maybe in Live 12.
@@homesrap6893 Thank you! Definitely agree that would be a cool feature. You could also always create an audio effect rack on the return track, create a chain with a compressor on it and set the compressor's sidechain input to the delay chain of the delay rack then monitor the input. But then that's still just as much work as creating another track and doing all of the routing. Here's hoping for some kind of update in the future! :)
Hello. I buyd the utility and spatial racks. But they didn’t work in my ableton :/ I put it on my audio chain but ableton didn’t let it work. Do you have an advice or an Tipp? :))
@harold4437 What version of Ableton Live do you have? You will need the most recent version of Ableton Live 11 for some of the racks, and you will also need Suite for some of them too. :)
