In Larry Jordan's tutorial on this technique, he states, "Skin is actually gray. (You, ah, know this by checking out your dead skin in the bathroom when no one is looking.) What gives skin its color is the red blood circulating underneath. Because all of us have the same color red blood, the skin tone line represents the color of red blood under skin."
@@JuiceBlack If you shoot a skin coloured plastic manikin (black or white), it will not show up on the skin tone line of a vectorscope. Sam is 100% correct. I've had issues with women wearing crazy amounts of concealer as they are still skin 'coloured' but the vectorscope can't see through the makeup!
@@donmcvey In that case, have them hold up their palm for at least one scene/image. Human palms are much more similar between people of different ethnicity. If necessary, just use your own palm in the scene/image for each lighting scenario. Save the corrections and apply the same changes to all similarly lit captures. The idea is just to make sure you have a reliable reference skin tone to compensate for lighting/capture differences.
Being black myself this really helps as I would never have known what to do with my own skin when it comes to colour grading, probably every tutorial I've come across is tailored towards white skin more
@@massetozacarias5693 dark skin literally absorbs light and light skin reflects it. white people will be blown out and dark people will be under exposed. either get exposure for mexicans to balance it out or adjust exposure for different skin shades.
Check other tutorials as well, that are more specific on skin differencies. Hue and Saturation varies (not only Lightness) across continents and there are some standard numbers that you can base your correction on.
As I was about to say I need to see a black guy for this you pull one up. I commend you and your beautiful channel. This is why I've been subbed so long!
This video was just what I needed, I’ve been working on improving my grading skills and only started getting the hang off using vector scopes. I think it’s dope you also touched on grading darker skin tones rather than just lighter skin tones like every other RU-vid video. Channels such as DSLR video shooter, Matti Haapoja, Buff Nerds, YC Imaging, Creative Ryan have been my film school! I’m externally grateful for the information and insight they all provide!!
I thought making RU-vid Videos would be a lot more easier than my IT Job, but there is so much to learn. I will now have to sit and learn all about Vector Scope from your other video. Nice video.
Great tips a lot of people (myself included) forget to or just don't know how to correct those skin tones properly when grading. I especially like how you didn't only go for red but hit the yellow too as those spots are usually the most neglected.
For someone who rarely does colour tutorials you really do have the best colour tutorials on RU-vid :P. Thanks a million the yellows tip was exactly what I was having issues with in Davinci and I had no idea how to even google the issue and now it seems like an easy fix.
In DaVinci resolve we have a better way. Using a selection of the skin that samples both luminance and hue to isolate the skin. Also for new resolve users here that don't know, the skin tone line is disabled by default on the vectorscope. Enable it by clicking on the settings icon above the scope and check skin tone line.
This video was the best explainer I have seen yet on getting better skin tones properly. I had struggled trying to adjust the colors manually but this allowed me to get the color much better to true life and my next videos will definitely show the difference. Thanks again and I always enjoy watching your videos!
Great video! I usually just do a single adjustment point on the 'orange' section in hue vs. hue, so this extra step (if needed) is another great technique added to my arsenal. Thanks Caleb!
Such a useful video, thank you Caleb! I use Premiere Pro, and can follow up until you have to select a specific colour, then I just get lost in the HSL secondary tab 🙈 Would love to see how to do this in Lumetri color if you ever got the chance!
Another very informative video. I remember the days I brought your camera guide for my Sony camera a6300. It was worth it! To this day it helped me a lot. Thank you! 🙏
It should be noted that in reality not everybody has the same skin hue, and even the same person looks different in different lighting. Strictly adhering to a skin tone line on a vector scope will rarely equate to "correction". In the footage you took at your desk, for example, your tongue is skin coloured because you've "corrected" it, when it's _supposed_ to be redder. To my eyes, with your skin, lips and tongue being the same hue as the lamp, it looks heavily stylized (kind of like Made In Chelsea) rather than natural looking. That's the problem with non-global adjustments.
As a colourist, we avoid skin looking odd and I tried to not manipulate unfortunately most log to rec709 luts for example messes up the skin tones and that's where we try to "correct" the tone.
Great stuff. I really love the zooms and moves on this. What capture software are you using? Do you do the zooms and moves within the capture software or in post? Thanks! Hoping to bump into you at NAB. 👍
Thank you for explaining this in such a simple way way. Very useful. And I would agree that after that correction your skin tones look a lot better and more even. No more atomic Caleb from a few years ago!
If you will convert properly from LOG to rec 709, then colors will be remapped correctly and will be very nice. But if you will do it manually by increasing contrast, etc, then you will need to correct it.
Hey Caleb I know the M50 is more entry level but it would be neat to see a guide on that! I feel as though a lot of beginners would be very interested in your take on the picture profiles for video (or images) and hopefully at least some % of those would see the value in ponying up a few shekels lol. Thanks for your great videos
Hi, I have the Panasonic Lumix GH3 and I am wondering if your course on the GH4 can actually be applied in a fair bit of its content to the GH3 ? I understand of course that the GH3 does not do 4K, and I get it that they are two different models, but watching your promo video for your GH4 course the menu's etc. look very much the same. Thanks for your help, Johno.
I love how in-depth this goes! Isolating the skin with a mask just to deep dive into its color is a great idea. And noting that it's so important to get the skin tone correct before adding a LUT or a fun color grade.. good stuff!
Amazing! thank you very much for this video. been struggling with color correction and it frustrates me. thanks to you I got some clarity. WORTH the watch. also followed the link for using vector and lumitri. again amazing. 😁
Wow very cool video! Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to check this on my next edit to see if my skin tone is being graded correctly. Or rather... if I've been doing it correctly for my last 50 videos over the last year 😅
who else has a Sony A6400 and has to use the video passport color checker to make it look good? Even when i make the colors perfect it makes my skin look weird.
Great job Caleb! I just wish I had more time to do some of this for my videos. I also use FCPX but I certainly need to find that skin tone feature. Thanks for sharing brother!
Hey, thanks a lot for this video! 👍 Gave me a much better understanding for what is wrong with the GH5 colors. Those pink lips and/or greenish skin-tones in every single picture profile are just terrible! I however don't understand, why we even have to waste our time with this. With proper RAW-color-mapping shifting HUEs should not be necessary at all. I googled, and found posts about this issue already for the GH2. And in 2020 the S1 still has the same problem?! Will Panasonic ever fix this?
I'll be honest, it may be because of my screen, but the original looks more natural. I think most people look more pink than orange in real life. But hey, if thats what you like!
Amazing one. There was no clear step by step tutorial online for this topic for a long time. Thanks for your work! Wish there would be Premiere pro tutorial too :P :) and maybe the use of X-rite Video card, I believe it has skin tone batches on it. (Hope they pay you for your work though :) ).
I gotta ask! please if somebody does know the tripod 3:35 the mini one which has a head and a camera on it. Tell me what is it called or where to get it if can! Appreciation !
