It’s important to note that if your interface is solely powered by USB (like my 2i2), you have to use the dongle that has both the USB A female AND lightning female. That way you can have power coming in through the lightning port while you’re recording. Otherwise, your interface will not receive enough power.
Thank you so much. This is the only video I found after a frustrating search that helped me record video and sound on my iPhone. It's always those little quirks of the equipment that drive me crazy and you pointed them right out. I'm using my brand new Scarlett Solo third-generation to record videos for our church RU-vid channel. This is our only connection as a congregation. So, It's really important. Have a great day!
Great advice man-works like a charm👏 To help with no interruptions or possible disconnects put your iPhone into ‘aeroplane’ mode before opening the camera/video app. 👍
I have watched more than a dozen video's trying to figure out how to do this!! Yours is the only one that seems to make sense. Thank you!! I'm going to try this today- hope it works!
Here is an update from my attempts to do this with a Tascam US-4x4. I first ordered a generic camera/lightening adapter and it didn't work. I ordered the official camera/lightening adapter and tried it. The first few times it wouldn't work. The camera app would even stop recording after I hit record. Then after leaving it connected for about 15 seconds before hitting record it started working on my Ipad. I then repeated this on my Iphone 8 and it worked flawlessly! Thank you for this information and add the Tascam US-4x4 as an interface that is compatible with camera adapter and Iphone.
Good point - sometimes the interface needs a little time to boot up and start talking to the iPhone before you start recording, or else weird things like that can happen!
So I have a presonus and got the apple brand and nothing happened, then I see this pop up in my OS to update my the adapter and then i click it and it says updating “Apple usb camera adapter” and I had no power. As soon as it’s done updating I have power and my presonus audio interface turns on and I can finally hear myself through my headphones and it sounds SOOO GOOD!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Also -with iPhone 12 and update, it works in ANY app, like TikTok, Smule, or camera. It all works!
I have presonus, and rode nt1a .. i always wanted to try using it for live streaming on tiktok.. as per show in the video, to have it work you need to connect the usb camera adapter only after opening the camera apps right? So is it the same when trying to use it for tiktok streaming? I cannot try it yet, just saw this video now. I will order for the apple usb camera adapter tomorrow! 😅😅
Yes! Thank you. I have the Focusrite 2i2, and it works, but like Shnapps12 pointed out 2 years ago, you will need the dongle with the lightning jack so that you can power your iphone while recording. Otherwise there doesn't seem to be enough power going to the Focusrite. My next video will be recorded with my Shure 55 mic. Finally!! Can't say enough thanks.
Tascam US 20x20, iPhone 8+, worked fine. Thanks for the video! I was trying it last night when the adapter arrived and getting no sound. The order of operations is indeed the secret.
Thank you for the video. I tried it and it works better than expected! My setup: Behringer X1204USB Mixer connected via original "Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter" to my iPhone SE (2016 with iOS 13+) then I use the "Moment Pro Camera App" which has a VU-Meter built-in for proper level setting. This setup never loses the USB Connection to the Mixer even if I go out of the camera app and back in again. The audio of the video even gets played back to the mixer in video replay mode. It works great!
I have encountered audio latency in the iphone videos I took. This means the video and the audio signal is not in sync. This had to be somehow expected. The only way to compensate it was so far in the video postproduction software "shotcut" which I use. There you can set the "Sync" value of the audio to a negative millisecond value (in my case -140ms). Then I export the video and it looks okay.
Yeah getting vocals in that way has worked no problem, through my analog mixer, but why can't I get the music through another channel to work?? I'm grateful for any help, thank you for the video
Thanks for the help. I also found a way to bring in audio while recording a video on iPhone. You need first pro camera by moment app. Works best letting you monitor incoming audio levels and mic gain control. Use a small portable MP3 player and connect audio to trrs to trs sliter to get two mic in audio and mic and one to monitor with headphones. Then you get quality audio in the video while recording a pre edit video
It worked perfectly with my steinberg ur22 mk2 - brilliantly explained! Thank you so much for this from Stockholm, Sweden. Time to make some live looping performances.
I’ve tried this exactly and the Scarlett is on and is indicating that it is picking up sound but it’s never recorded with the video on the iPhone. Any ideas why??
This video saved me HOURS! Thank you my guy. I used a M-AUDIO Interface by the way and it worked. The camera part should be included in the INTRUCTIONS lol
This process works on a UR44. Using this procedure you get sound out of both L and R. If not followed you get sound only out of L side. You can edit later in software and set audio to Mono.
Hi Oh yes! I am using a Zoom L-8 Mixer with wireless inputs from both my Roland Taiko-1 electronic drum and headset Microphone. I have a wireless out to my PA speakers. The mixer is set to IOS USB output via a cable that plugs into the Apple adapter and I turn the Lightning plug goes into my iPhone 12 Pro. Oh YES - CRITICAL set up video on camera plus set up Mixer AND ONLY THEN PLUG MIXER INTO CAMERA!!! Works like a dream, fabulous. My wife and I have a Taiko-1 each and have doubled our inputs to the Mixer and all is good.
It works like you said. I Order thr USB 3 camera adapter from Amazon same day delivery, so I ordered the fifine mixer with built in interface but I forgot that my Rockville Preamp PPA52 which has a built in usb interface on the back panel and followed your prompts and works like a champ. No more using that 2 cent mic on the phone it self.
Hey buddy. You rock. This is EXACTLY what I needed to learn about my usb interface/iPhone. You described it perfectly for the non-tech-savvy crowd. One quick question: if I wanted to use my (scarlet) interface with an app such as Zoom for a live broadcast, then what should I do? Open the zoom app and then plug in the interface to the iPhone? Would this pair the two? Help! Online gig is on Thursday and I’m trying for the best sound I can get. Thanks 🙏
Using iPhone 12, recording through Scarlett 2i2. Works great with the adapter with lighting and usb like you said! Thanks! Only thing is listening back to the video with headphones audio only plays in left ear, can’t find a way in settings to fix that. Hopefully no one will be listening with headphones!
Hey Bro, just tested my Yamaha MG10XU and it works fine just as you said. You need to follow the proper order. Its awesome, thanks! I have an iPhone 11 btw
Russ, I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on using GarageBand on my phone I like to use my mics. All the tutorials that I read are too extensive. What I need is a simple result in recording vocal and guitar. And then layering other acoustic instruments if I get that then I know I can go further into it. Keeping it basic like you did this video explaining everything was very very helpful. You rock.
My scarlet interface pans input 1 to the far left and input 2 to the far right. Does anyone know how to change this so everything goes down the middle? This isnt a problem in garageband as you can chose the input but I can't record video with it
that's because the soundcard isn't input on the phone as an asio so having two inputs just made the soundcard as a stereo device having 1 and 2 pan left and right
Thank you so much Russ this totally works. I use it all the time. Keep doing these informational videos they’re very easy for me to follow and they work.
Great video. Only problem for me is …..I’m using a Boss Katana 100 into a Roland Rubix interface. It WORKS, but it sounds kinda crappy. I wanted to make guitar lesson videos and not have to use my DAW to sync audio with a video. I was hoping I could do it all in one step and record the video AND the audio simultaneously. It works, but the Katana sounds like crap going into the phone and amazing going into my DAW.
Hey - i'm using a behringer (umc22) audio interface with my condensor mic and followed the set up into iphone. My problem is that it's only playing through left channel in headphones- how do i solve this? Thanks!
Can you make an updated one for recording music to tik tok? I see everyone doing it and I am so lost. I can play piano, guitar and sing but I cannot figure out the technology part of it. And you really made this easy for me lol
Thank you! This was very helpful. Thank you for the detailed explanations. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while but I’m just bad with technology. I just happen to own an IPhone and an interface. Lol.. thanks again!
Do you need an interface at all if your mic is usb-c to usb. I would think the Apple camera adapter would be good enough plugged in to give enough power to run the mic. I am using the HyperX Quadcast S. Great video.
I have a Roland Quad capture. I tried to use the 1/4 inch monitoring jack into my iPhone 8 using a 1/4 inch to lightening adapter cable. It didn’t work haha. I had to buy an iRig HD with the lighting cable factory fitted but the preamps are so noisy it’s upsetting. I think the focusrite Scarlet gen 2 or 3 is what I will buy next. It has pretty decent preamps and doesn’t need a PC to make it function. So no more having to keep reinstalling corrupted drivers haha. Seems like every time I want to watch a movie on my computer my bloody Quad Capture stops working and I have to reinstall the driver, kills the mood for wanting to watch that movie you’ve been dying to see haha. Tho my 10 year old Quad Capture is a very good sounding audio interface, very good preamps and very high sample rate and bit depth capabilities.
I am able to connect my Scarlet 2I2 with my iPhone. The microphone is only able to be picked up when its connected on the 1st input, the second input is dead. Is this normal?
I can’t wait to try this!! I want to record my performance from my daw to my iPhone 11, but in stereo!! Then edit it afterwards instead of syncing it. Wht video app do you suggest?
Brilliant! I use an old iPhone 6S which I have rigged up as a fixed station. As you know, it has a headphone jack. Would you be able to suggest how to connect the focusrite in that case?
I’m sure that this is in the comments somewhere, but has anyone had issues with only the left channel coming through on playback, particularly when using a 2i2?? I can only find videos regarding how to fix it while using a computer. Thanks!
i followed your instructions but it doesn't work on a Yamaha Audiogram 6 audio interface. I was using a condenser mic and i activated the phantom power. Is there something else i can do about it?
Thank you for making this video, Sir. Got one question actually. I tried this method with my audio interface which is Steinberg UR12. Connect it to my iphone with with your methods but I have a problem. The iphone stock camera app is recording only left audio channel. I guess it is because the camera app detects the usb interface has 2 channels and handle it as stereo inputs. Does anybody know how to fix this? I mean we don’t have the option to change the audio recording setting in the stock camera app. But it works flawlessly with garageband since garageband has the ability to choose audio preference.
sir, i’m assuming you’ve connected your instrument or mic into both channels to be able to hear it on both sides? yes on garage band you’ll get to change audio preference, but on the video app, what i do when i’m connecting a microphone only, i use a dual XLR male to XLR female connect it to 2 channels of my interface and connect the mic to the other end of the splitter which is the female or you can connect your existing mic cable to the splitter itself. that way, you’ll be able to hear your mic on both ssides not only on the left or right. another thing i do is connect the left and right output of my small mixer into channels 1 and 2 of the interface. that way you’ll surely get the sound on both sides. on the mixer it’s where my keyboard and microphone is connected. it worked fine on my case. i’m using a 2 channel interface :) hope this doesn’t confuse you. just trying to help :)
Allan Gonzales hello Sir, thank you for your feedback. I got what you mean and will try that way if it solve my problem. For now, I recorded the video and audio separately and join then later in the video editing process. A little bit longer steps, but it works for now. Anyway, thanks again!
Hey man thanks a lot for this really helpful video! I’m wondering if i still need the USB hub as other people said that i need the USB hub to power the audio interface
Hey thanks for this video it’s been really helpful. I was able to record electric guitars & bass with the iphone camera using a microphne into the mic input (input 1) on the scarlett solo, but so far have not been able to record through the instrument input (input 2). Would you have a solution for this? Thanks again
It’s the app that you are using. Anyways this comment is year old. Garage band uses 2 inputs. Current stock phone app tfests the two as a stereo pair. Kinda good in some ways but to fix it in post.
well, at the least i’m glad that i’m not the only one who’s encountering the same prob. i’m using audient evo4 and i have to do the same procedure to make it work. but the thing is, my previous interface which was presonus iTwo, it would work smoothly without the workaround. if only i knew this would happen, i should have not exchanged my audiobox for an evo. LOL. but i wonder, if i update my IOS, i’m thinking maybe it’s gonna work? lemme know if you’ve tried that and if it worked. thanks a lot. thanks for the info.
Great vid! Does anyone know how I can use my preset guitar sound (using an audio interface on my Mac with Logic) and record that lovely rich sound directly into my iPhone whilst recording the video of me playing it?
Looking forward to trying this with the focusrite 8i8. Anyone able to record multi tracks / multi microphones on their iPhone / Ipads? Sorry, if this is a stupid question. Is there a video about what apps to use and how to hook it up? Currently, using MV88+ and Motiv app on my channel.
