Better than a brush hog - Gas powered pull behind brush mower

In this video, I give some much needed attention to our favorite brush mower we've ever used. The MOTT T-38. I install a brand new Harbor Freight Predator engine as well as a new pulley and belt. After that a little demo in the neighbors yard with a good blooper towards the end.
These things rock for homeowner and land owner use. Compact, reliable, shreds everything and easy to use.

My family owned the Mott mower company until 1983. Nice to see the flails still going

I was lucky enough to get a T-38 to fix up! Now I can pull it behind my Cub Cadet 100. Can't beat the old iron

nice unit…was making walking trails thru virgin bush…ax, chainsaw, and an old push motor to mulch. this would have been nice to do the finishing work! cheers!

The hours I wasted as a youth, screwing around with Briggs, Tecumseh, Wisconsin etc. . .engines. I'll never get that time back 😵‍💫 Honda clone engine swap is always the way to go.

Nice unit. If it were mine I would offset the the tow bar by like 4ft like an agricultural mower.

I have a very old Mott attached to my cub Loboy. I had to change all couple hundred hanging flail knives one summer. It was actually really cool. Are you here in Pa or somewhere else ?

For the T-38, where do you purchase your replacement knives and flails? Looking at a similar one for sale. Thx.

There are a couple companies that make replacement hammers. Just do a quick Google search you'll see them. Not the cheapest thing in the world but as long as you're not running over boulders all the time they should last a fairly long time after you replace them. Absolutely love this machine.

Yeah, the carburetor is weird on those Briggs some weird up draft design I nicknamed the Saxophone. It would be pretty obvious if you looked at the overall shape of it when removed as a complete assembly from the engine block. On the bright side, you made an American product even better powering it with a Japanese engineered, Chinese made engine. If you are going to repower any of your stuff, you can't go wrong with a Honda (or clone) engine as the American companies (Except Kohler Command) kinda suck.

This type of mower might be good for my land. I have too many bumps and inclines for my brush hog. Does this type of mower work well on small rolling hills?

ya that thing may be nice for small twigs and tall grass if your going slow enough. but my 26" Dr brush mower with a 15hp overhead cam motor would do bushes and small trees 2"-2.5" in diamitor ware that flail could not. and I can fit in smaller places and do more stuff that the flail could not. don't get me wrong flail mowers are nice yes but I prefure my Dr brush mower over that small flail any day. just personal preference that's all.

@@downstateradv oh I know what they can do but I wouldn't do anything much over 1" tho for small bushes or small trees like poplar, oak or even pines. you might do damage to the knives. I know what there made out of and trust me there not no ware near as heavy duty as my Dr brush mowers blade. I've already done some small bushes that were a tanged mess and about 2"-3 In diamitor and that was pushing it for sure just to cut down the base. the rest of the limbs mulched up no problem. made a mess but looked good after it was all cleaned up tho.

Agreed. But for that application they do a great job and take up way less space than a Dr or similar models.

Flail or hammer knife mower is the name I've mostly heard them called.
