Considering Universal are a multi-billon dollar company, you would've thought that they could've dedicated themselves to providing the fans and Blu-ray collector's with a nice solid case, considering the partial effort with the packaging. Obviously Universal think differently. Not like Indicator on the hand. Attention to detail and great hard boxes that look the part.

VERY interesting review Leon.... I have the other Studio Canal Carpenters on standard 4k and this version of The Thing would look better in a regular release for uniformity, I was kind of knew Arrow would win over the bonus features, so I knew I didn't need the limited edition, so after seeing your review I'm happy to have Arrow as my special edition and regular 4k as my... well 4k! 🤣🤣 I agree, that I can feel we are not "done" with The Thing yet, it's probably had the most incarnations of a release in Horror history 🤯🤯🤯 I'm tempted to wait for a sale now 🤔🤔 great honest review Leon 🤩🤩👍👍

Thank you, John! I think for a fan of the film, it’s worth picking up the regular release for sure like you have done, as this limited release doesn’t offer anything amazing outside of the soundtrack CD. Arrow went above and beyond with their release and the extras are almost impossible to beat there but I wish Universal at least had a retrospective featurette or a new commentary. I can definitely see Shout Factory or Arrow doing a new 4K restoration later down the line, it feels like one that‘ll be in the sales soon so I’d definitely hold off (although there’s always the risk of missing out on the slipcover!) thank you again, John 😃

I have the Arrow release as well as this set, so I'm not worried about the lack of features, certainly the 4K will carry over any filming inconsistencies so its clearly nothing to do with the restoration process. I honestly think now Universal has done this 4K that will be it for The Thing. I can get the benefit of the DTS-X mix which you didn't mention as a plus in the comparison in the full Atmos 7.14 system that mix is impressive. I would also add that Universal has even followed the Studiocanal design deliberately so its fits in better with those sets which also have OST cds included.

Great review Leon....The only problem I have with the Arrow release is that it's only a 1 disc edition.... hours and hours of extra crammed into the disc... imagine if the film had a whole disc to itself... higher bitrate...🤩🤩

Thank you so much, Roy! Even though the Arrow release is only 1 disc, it looks absolutely fantastic for the amount of content on the disc! Arrow knock it out of the park with their transfers and it has a healthy bitrate even with the inclusion of the extras!

I went for the Amazon exclusive steelbook as I’ve got the Arrow Boxset and I have the recently rereleased soundtrack from Quartet and Vinyl from Waxwork so solid on that from and the Thing prequel on standalone disc so just went for the more basic but with what I feel is superior art work steelbook option

Glad I didn't pull the trigger on these. I felt like the transfer would be underwhelming without DV. It's obvious any release without DV at this point is a cash grab for an imminent rerelease. Keeping my SF steel... Hoping it gets re released as an arrow 4k limited edition to round everything off.

Got mine arriving tomorrow from HMV. Always loved this film, but will be keeping the Arrow edition also which I wouldn't normally do, but the extras are much better on the older edition

Very interesting review Leon. Oooh, that's really dissapointing that there are no new extras in the box at all !. That's a bit anti-climactic for sure. The box doesn't look that strong either. It is actually cool that you get a disc with the soundtrack :). I have never had problems with zavvi yet about damaged packaging (YET). But it looks pretty dented. That sucks. And you're absolutely right, the Arrow release is AWESOME ;). Keep up the great work. Cheers mate !

I've contacted Zavvi regarding the issue so hopefully they'll get back to me soon, I usually never have issues with them but when you're paying £40 for an item, it's not great to have it arrived dented. The soundtrack being included is a great bonus! I'd highly recommend the Arrow version as the best so far! Thanks again :)

Mines coming tomorrow Leon and I do wonder if it warrants the £40 price tag. The Studiocanal boxsets are lovely so The Thing completes the reissues.

@@LeonTalksStuff Hey Leon I was going to say the best 4K boxset I possess is the Flash Gordon StudioCanal issue. The whole package is completely lush! The 4K disc too is superb, the best it's ever looked. Met Brian Blessed 3 times over the years, what a great bloke. In fact the last time at Ilkley Lit Fest he said "oh there you are Gary you've been a bloody nuisance all night!" 😀

Nice unboxing and review Leon. I cancelled mine due to the flimsy packaging and the digipak. I'm also not upgraded to 4k so I didn't see it being worth it. I want the arrow limited edition so I'm going to try and get that instead 😁

Thank you for this review, I might wait for sale or just stick with my Arrow copy. I was hoping that Arrow would release this in 4K since Tremors and Pitch Black were both great releases in my opinion. Do you know if this is likely to happen ever?

I’m not 100% that Arrow will release it anytime soon but it definitely wouldn’t surprise me if they ended up getting the license in a few years.

Not sure but I believe usa are having a few stock issues on this release so an OOP is a possibility. I have the same zavvi LE with spine crease but still recommend this release. In the end you get the 4k release and the prequel plus soundtrack which is a good album by morricone. As for picture I thought the hdr added a lot and the sound was crisp and being 1980s horror and the setting I think it's as good as a studio is going to do without a major restoration which i feel is unlikely in the current market. I am definitely keeping my arrow and universal releases for the complete edition

I think like the Studio Canal John Carpenter releases before it, this will eventually get a reprint as it's too popular of a film for Universal not to milk it more. I'm sorry your spine is dented too! It's a great release in regards of what's included alongside the original film like the soundtrack and the 2011 prequel but I just wish they had some new bonus features or ported over the Arrow/Shout Factory ones to make this a definitive release in that way. I hope one of the boutique labels gets a chance to redo this in 4K at some point though!

Without doubt the extras make the previous release. Not Included due to licence do you think ? That's a possibility in my eyes as I think the bluray in the box is the arrow release rebadged. I look forward to another remaster but I do think that's 5 years plus away based on anniversary editions or years since release. I am lucky that my disposable income allows for me to keep both releases. Saying that I still have the laserdisc lol

Can't see this going on sale unless they manufacture more as its sold out everywhere. Even on the WB website. I have it ordered and its on its way but I won't be getting rid of my Arrow release. I just think this 4K maybe compliments the Arrow release and recommend everyone buy the standard 4k version instead of going for the limited edition. The only thing of note that you would miss is the soundtrack cd

With the Studio Canal one recently going back on sale, I think it’ll get a reprint eventually but even still, I can see the standard edition going into a 2 for £30 very soon. The Arrow is still my favourite so far!

@@LeonTalksStuff I love my Arrow release but just watched this 4k release and to me I think it looks amazing. The HDR has done an amazing job on the film. I was a little disappointed when I watched your review but not so much now as I was happy with what I saw...Agreed it will probably get another release and I think Dolby Vision version would make it even better...I have a Panasonic UB820 and it's own HDR enhancer has done wonders for it. As you pointed out there are some soft shots in the movie that was down to the original filmmaking but I think anyone who knows the film will let that slide. As for the packaging, I just don't get why these big studios cannot make the rigid boxes for these. I'm happy to keep my Arrow release and this compliments that.

I was so ready to buy until I saw that it only had upmixes and remixed audio. No original stereo or the quadrophonic audio the previous arrow and shout factory blu-rays had. Hoping this drops the arrow set down some so I can buy that. I have the studio canal fog and while I can say it looks wonderful with a beautiful pcm 2.0 mono audio for the film it also has a very flimsy outer box. It was worse that the eureka boxes and way worse than arrow. I’d say it’s like the box that the recent Indiana Jones 4ks had which is fine but for the price you want actually quality on everything

I think for purists, the Arrow is still the way to go although if you just pick up the standard release from them, all of the same content is on the disc! The packaging for these Studio Canal releases aren’t the greatest for sure, wish they were the hard boxes that the Arrow releases have! I avoided that Indiana Jones release for that reason, I’ll be waiting for the standard releases for sure

The arrow release is a better looking set and far better packaging, this release is the like that Indiana Jones set quality, I honestly struggle why people are picking this up when the arrow set or even the arrow Blu ray is out there, the transfer on the arrow release is very nice, this is just a waste, sorry mate nothing against you but those who consume in physical media need to really draw the line with releases like this as lets be honest a 4 k with a slip at 20 quid would have been better value.

I don't think The Thing will ever look as good as Blade Runner or some of the other sci-fi films.. the quality is just not there. The Thing was a low budget film costing a fracton of what it cost to make Blade Runner which had a much larger budget.

I think it’s all down to the restoration and preservation of the original materials, something low budget such as Lucio Fulci’s Zombie looks absolutely stunning on 4K due to the incredible restoration by Blue Underground. Plus, the budgets between The Thing ($15 million) and Blade Runner ($30 million) aren’t too different.

Nice review and comparison. However, please don't mention Films at Home ever again, Together with Brass Tax and Quantum TV, he's one of the biggest idiots on RU-vid and a complete waste of anyone's time. Haven't seen the 4K release of The Thing myself (do own the Shout Factory and Arrow Films releases), but will buy the iTunes release when the price drops a bit. A shame you aren't all that happy about the transfer on the 4K release. Read that people aren't so much annoyed that the original 2.0 (Dolby Stereo) and 4.1 (70mm 6-Track Stereo) audio aren't included on the 4K release, but that the Atmos audio is pretty bad by itself. Would be nice if they'd included the 2.0 and 4.1 mix. The moments you found looking lackluster on the 4K release, did you find these lackluster on Arrow's release too and could you give an example? Take care for now!

I'm disappointed in the studio release of Blade Runner. The bit rates are low (no better than the bluray in places) and there is macroblocking and chroma noise in some darker scenes. The issues are prominent in the scenes where Deckard and Rachel are together in Deckards room. Blade Runner is an early 4k disc and a new scan and encode is definitely required. Great review here of this new release of The Thing 👍 I've bought the Zavvi Steelbook of this 4k edition, I'll keep my Arrow limited boxset. too.
