Better than you think, worse than I thought. Salomon Advanced Skin 12 for Trail Running

The Salomon Adv Skin 12 is a good hydration pack that will work well for most runners unless you're planning to use it with a bladder.
Trail running is my passion and I needed a hydration vest that could accommodate a bladder since most of my runs are self-supported. I’ve heard a lot of great things about this pack so when it came time to upgrade old Nathan vest I decided to see what all the hype was about. And while I can see why so many folks love this pack, it did not work well for me. I found several significant issues with the bladder, and the quick fit system took me a while to get used to.
My opinion of this pack comes down to how you plan on using it. If you primarily use soft flasks when you run, this will be a great durable vest! The comfort and versatility is fantastic, and once you get that fit dialed in, it feels pretty amazing to run in. But if you want a hydration vest that can be used with a bladder, and/or you have fumble fingers like me, I would probably find something else.

Hey Sage! I work at Salomon and I really enjoyed this review of our Adv Skin 12 pack. I've got an easy solve for your bladder tube issue. The best way to utilise this tube is to route it through the bottom and up inside the pack to your right as you've done - then just underneath the Salomon logo on your chest there is a fairly large elastic loop which the tube sit inside of. Once you've secured it, just cut the tube to your desired length and it'll work like a charm. Happy Trails!
@trailsagerunning
@trailsagerunning Год назад
Thanks for the feedback Brandan. I'll give that a shot. In the future, please tell the design team to consider a shoulder strap and magnetic attachment point for the hose. I don't think it will add that much weight, and it would improve the usability a great deal for bladder users like myself. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

You don’t have to cut the tube to length, just coil a loop in it within your pack and it puts the tube at the correct length. I used mine for the first time the other day and it was perfect. However, I did have to search for a set up video on RU-vid or I would have been puzzled like you were.

@@trailsagerunninghowever, many don't want a permanent magnet connector on a pack when they don't intend to use it. The pack is primarily for trail runners and most trail runners use soft flasks.

I use the Adv Skin 12. Loved watching this review, even though I've run with one of these packs for a year now. I agree with most points. For the 2L water bladder tube, I actually don't even bother with the proper routing path and never have. There is a smallish canvas loop about half way down the right chest strap area - I route the tube through there (over my right shoulder) and keep the excess drinking end tucked in under one of the flexible chest retention strings. I find this is the best configuration for me. I'll be doing a 200 miler soon and have just purchased a Montane 20L vest so I'm now starting to train with that. I still love the Salomon Adv Skin 12 though, and will have it as a spare/backup pack (I might even switch to it for checkpoints that are closer to each other). Congrats on the new channel by the way! Cool that you've branched out for running specific content here!

@trailrunningforlife
@trailrunningforlife Год назад
@@trailsagerunning I'm only just getting acquainted with the Gecko VP 20L - it's a lot bigger than I expected! That extra 8L is surprising. It fits nicely and feels comfortable enough, but I need more time to figure out how I position gear and all of that before I form any solid opinions. One thing I'm worried about is overloading it - not sure how it'll handle a lot of weight in terms of how it moves around with the running. I'll definitely be trying that out.

Hi Sage, great video, thanks for the review! Just a small tip for the attachment of your bladder, in case you didn't figure it out yet: what works perfectly for me is to put the plastic piece attached to the loop on the pack through the loop of the insulation sleeve (that's first put through the eyelet on the bladder) and then to squeeze the plastic piece and move it all the way to the base of its loop (where the loop is attached to the pack). That should hold the whole together quite well, I never experienced any problems with that.

Great review Sage! Appreciate your views here. I currently run the 5 Sense Pro, which is the much smaller sibling to the Advance Skin, but I have to say I can still fit a 1.5L Nathan bladder in the back (even though I’m not supposed to!) and fit some clothing and plenty of fuel items up front! Same as you, I wouldn’t buy it again but it’s served me just fine this past year.

The ADV SKIN 12 and 5 packs are great! I have the same 12 pack and also purchased the the latest ADV SKIN 5 pack last year (which is very similar but not identical to the 12). I also have a review on my channel of the ADV SKIN 5 vest. I love both packs! I don't normally run with a bladder as the two 500ml soft flasks are generally enough but I have put the HydraPak Stow 1L in the back (where the bladder goes) for extra water which I can use to refill the soft flasks when needed during a longer self supported efforts. Only downside is that you have to pull it out vs drinking from a straw.

Hey @TrailSage - Running! I have the same vest. Couple of points that might help you. Small fabric loops are just above the soft flask pockets, which you can use to guide your bladder hose trough. Done that, pull back the hose a bit from inside your pack (where your actual bladder is located), and you will be able to get your preferred length, stopping any flapping around or obscuring your view.

I do agree with the minus points about the vest ,I pop the feeding tube through the elastic on the opposite side of my chest which so far has worked,but as you say loops and magnets might have improved things I want to add to your review from a female perspective, Salomon designed a vest for female anatomy where the bottles are placed lower and curved to follow the line of anyone who has noticable breasts ,I can't praise this design enough,I've worn this vest for hours at a time and forgot I'm wearing it , so much so my friend and I came down from a hill and had Sunday lunch outdoors at a cafe last summer, I sat in my vest the whole meal because I forgot I was wearing it 🤦 I agree with the elastic being fiddly , the plus side of the elastic is it's very comfortable if you have breasts, it seems to just mould around them without causing pressure points or squashing my breasts down (an ongoing problem for myself and others who are not flat chested) On a final note ,I'm autistic and have sensory issues around clothing and anything on my body , wearing most rucksacks I was constantly aware of the strapping and would end up cutting them off or tying them up somehow but then end up with the rucksack slipping off my shoulders ,I'd tried other hydration vests but again very aware of the straps and decided against purchasing but this vest I have no sensory issues due to the fitting system. Thanks for the great review 😊👍

new sub. great sound, videography and informative. Just what I was looking for. Looking at comparing this to sense pro series. I see you put your multiple gopro batteries in the unzipped pocket. First, cool or not, to see someone else that carries so many gopro batteries. I've actually gone to a usb-c connected battery to the gopro. Anyhow, question is, do you have problems with the batteries getting wet from sweat or finding their way out of the pocket? Or anything else finding it's way out of the pocket. I have this problem on my unsecured Nathan pockets.
@trailsagerunning
@trailsagerunning 7 месяцев назад
Thank you so much for the kind words. Regarding your question. I have not run into any issues with batteries being effected by sweat, but I do carry a spare zip lock bag with me at all times. As for zippered vs non-zippered pockets, I have not had anything fall out of the pockets, but I secure the vest pretty snug to my body. I suppose if the vest was loose that could be an issue. Hope that helps.

When securing the bladder in the back, thread trough the loop on the insulating cover and the top of the bladder, pull it tight with springy buckle and it stays in place. Dont go through the loop Magda shows, because it will hinder acces to the other pocket. If You do it like this, I´m sure You can get rid of two of Your cons...

Try using some baking soda or white vinegar (blend with tap water) to soak the flasks. Soke the flask for several hours or overnight. Sniff the flask, if there is no plastic smell, wash it with fresh water. Then, top up the flask, leave it for a few hours, and try to drink the water to see if the smell is still there. I do this to several of my bladders, which might help you remove the plastic smell, or at least most of the smell.
