Betty flies to Japan to do a show, and sings the title number. She then dons a kimono, and sings it again in Japanese. - @CultCinemaClassics / cultcinemaclassics / cultcinemaclassics / cultcinemaclassics / cultcinemaclassics
@@HelloKitty-x3 There have been loads of models and looks, but I meant what they've done! Think about it! There's vet barbie, doctor barbie, marine barbie, frickn queens royal guard barbie!! She's been everything!!
There's something just super sweet about this cartoon, just pure appreciation for Betty Boop's audience in Japan, no racist caricatures in the cartoon, in a time where racism in cartoons was incredibly normalized. It's really heartwarming, there was clearly so much love put into the cartoon, especially with translating the song into Japanese.
I think one of the main reasons most (most being key word here) Betty Boop cartoons weren’t over the top racist was because the Fleischer Family were immigrants and most of the studio in New York was too.
@@OppoRancisis "There was a lot less incentive to be racist towards East-Asians..." Are you serious? There were many reasond to be racist. You do realize there was a Chinese head tax during this time that was aimed at stopping Chinese from immigrating to the US, and fear of the "yellow peril" was perpetuated in many Western countries since at the late 19th century.
Yeah it is! I can't understand all of it, but at the end she is saying "Arigatō!" (You would probably write it in Japanese lettering lol) Which means "thank you!"
@@pyromaniac709 Well, I might be exaggerating somewhat, but considering how influential he was to the medium, it's also not an entirely inaccurate statement.
@@benshon9708 That's at least a partial explanation. The big eyes are mostly due to being more visually expressive, while the small nose and mouth are due to Japanese beauty standards.
@@noodleexpanding3407 Betty boop inspired the writer of Princess Knight to create the artstyle that it is. Princess Knight was popular and now known for giving anime it's signature style
This was on some DVD of old cartoons I had as a kid. I loved this song so much. Also I like the character designs of the japanese audience. They don't look like those awful racist caricatures from the time period (squinty eyes and big buck teeth).
Whats racist about accuracy? Racism is hate, it would be racist to not represent a certain nationality the way their people actually look. Showing them how they actually look is actually a very respectful and attentive gesture.
Seriously Aiyanna, if that's your only worry, wanna take a serious note about other type of caricatures and personalities that's been presented in Betty Boop or any other cartoons of a time? They don't only make fun out of foreigners, they literally make fun out of different types of people living in america as well. But your only focus is on about foreigners. How bloody racist is your own mindset just to focus on race in a first place? There's way more in to these cartoons than "Black and white" population, start thinking about what's in between the boxes.
Wow surprisingly not racist. Just super cute and she’s actually speaking ok Japanese especially for the time! The thought and consideration put into this!

@@myasmilkyway Long RU-vid comments used to be popular. I used to spend like an hour writing a comment. Got the likes to make it worth the effort, too.
Ayo, her Japanese is spot on, what. Apparently, from what I’ve heard, this was dedicated to the large audience of Japanese folks who enjoyed watching Betty Boop. They asked some Japanese students for translations and everything. I dunno if that’s true, but that is actually just really cool
I don't know if they asked the students for translations but they did get them to watch the animation to make sure Betty's dancing wasn't too obscene for the Japanese audience!
Did anyone notice that when Betty looks through her goggles, the scene of Japan was a full model made of miniatures, carefully scroll-animated to give the effect of parallax? That was an amazing use of miniatures in an otherwise 2D cartoon!
@@lenolioskeleton8906 They would photograph the backgrounds first, then they would animate Betty on cels over the background shots and photograph that process
I watch this as a kid in early or mid 90s and now watching this after 20+ years, its really surprising how the creator put so much respect to Japanese culture+people really ahead of its time where its full of racism in classic cartoons, and singing in Japanese is a surprising and beautiful gesture to her audience
@Meeep so, here it is: Last year or two my dog, cat and Grandma died, it was always winter whenever a death occurred so I just look back at their videos and pictures and... I miss them you know... Spending this December without them feels empty and sad and I just can't let go of them I just hope that one day, I'll be as happy as before, thanks for caring about me. by the way, do you have Discord? We can chat if you want to
I was honestly expecting this to be as bad as Felix the cat in Japan, but this was adorable and really nice. Betty Boop is still an incomparable queen.
I love this. Omg Betty is so adorable. As a Japanese American, I am very glad this was made very wholesomely during its time period. I would always see the older cartoons with very racist (or stereotypical) looks and always portrayed them to be very evil. Betty managed to make this adorable masterpiece during the time that it was not looked at that way. Classic Betty Boop ☺️
Same! My dad is Japanese and my mom is American. My mom’s side of the family has always been extremely racist towards my dad, especially because my great grandfather (on my mom’s side), was alive during this period and was very anti-Japanese. It’s great to see that not everyone during this time period was racist or stereotypical, because even though I wasn’t alive during this time, I’m very nostalgic to the 1930s-50s. I love old cartoons, but hated the controversy.
@@i_eat_soap Hey~ My Dad is Japanese and my Mom is American too 😆 Tho it was my Grandma Yoko who lived in Japan during the war (and had to follow her mom to every bombing locations due to being a nurse) she had a hard time with other races. Such as the Chinese (which is funny cause i can speak that language too) and on my moms side, it was my grandfather who also served in the war and HATED the Japanese, so he always had a hard time looking at us.
@@tamika1014 Wow! It’s great to have someone to relate to on this. My great grandfather served in the war as well. I was introduced to old cartoons by my great grandma (who wasn’t racist). She really took me and my sister in and accepted our Japanese side of the family. That’s why I’ve always loved old cartoons! I hope you and your family are doing well now.
@@i_eat_soap They are. Tho both passed on sadly. But the racism in our family stopped with them. But yeah my family is overall doing well these days. I was introduced old cartoons by my Dad actually. So i always founds those interesting

I watched this when I was six and I didn't even know Japan existed back then, and being 17 now, knowing what I do now, it's only made it more fun to watch this again today.
I'm Japanese and holy shit, her pronunciation is so easy to understand. The sentences made sense. I've heard way worse from recent movies and shows. I'm so happy😳
@@apersonwhocantmoveitmoveit7688 I feel like it would be more of those times, which makes this more impressive. back then they didn't have such things like translate or duolingo, which many people have today. Cartoons wanting to speak Japanese today would use actual japanese cause people today can say things such as "it's not actual Japanese."
@@sofiafontes4741 Really?! You do know they had...people...who spoke Japanese back then. My gosh...you guys think just because people didn't have smartphones and apps that somehow they can't do something as basic as speak another language. Geez.
The studio actually had Japanese students help a bit with this animation so that's why it wasn't as racist because they actually consulted Japanese individuals beforehand, this was also before WWII when people began drawing racist cartoons. This one however wasn't intended to be harmful, Just bring both Japanese and American people together
For some reason I just adore the fact that Betty Boop has seemingly united the earth and ended all global suffering because of this simple song that everyone loves so much. There’s even a short where she becomes the president of the u.s and makes the country a technologically advanced utopia.
I love Betty boop, she’s such a feminist icon for her time and, while not perfect, they made her content much less racist than everything was at the time
@@angel72987 I see how she could be considered one sometimes. In some interactions she was protrayed as a business owner, had her own home, rejected marriage when she would have been expected to settle down, ect. That seems normal now but back then it was taboo for a lot of people
@@angel72987 she's smart, capable, independent, and does things herself instead of relying on a man to save her, which was really common at the time in media. At the same time, she doesn't reject her femininity, embracing it and enjoying it. She's exactly what a young girl should strive to be, and I'm glad that people in that time period had a good example of a woman who took no garbage but still looked beautiful and dainty doing so.
I find it pretty funny how every time Betty says "Thank you", her vocals jump higher and higher to almost obnoxiously high ultrasound. Weirdly charming
I was enjoying it a lot, and then she started singing in Japanese my brain popped! For the era this was made in, it was shocking for this to be so CULTURED!
I’m from japan and she was singing in Japanese. But japan don’t always where Kimonos, they only where kimonos in special days. でもベティーブートさんはあんまり上手に話せてなかったんですけど、でも世界で一番難しい語は日本なのでとても上手だったと思いました😊
It’s also because this was back along time, they wouldn’t have had a translator or someone to help them. When Betty was made, it was also racist and stereotyped. So in my opinion for their time it was really good, seeing as they didn’t have much to work with. Not saying you didn’t already know that lol
I used to LOVE to watch original 1930's Betty Boop episodes on RU-vid when I was 10 years old! I loved all of the episodes, but this was one of my absolute favorites, along with Minnie the Moocher!
The statue of liberty is facing south-east. In the video she points to her right, if Betty were to follow the directions given she would fly over central America and onto New Zealand, not Japan.
I honestly need kimono betty mech now, she looks so pretty. and I'm happy that even for what happened back then, this particular episode painted Japan and alot of other countries more positive
What stands out to me is how plausible they make the quick change. Like how she exclusively faces the audience for the first half of the performance, presumably to hide the back of the. Obi belt that would be sticking out Just realized you can kinda see the belt when she is bowing to the audience at the beginning of her performance!
While some sterotipical expressions are seen, I believe Japanese in the past period would welcome Betty with pleasure, especially when she said "Arigato".
