Betty Boop: "Bamboo Isle" (1932)

Betty Boop's Bamboo Isle is a 1932 Fleischer Studios Betty Boop animated short, directed by Dave Fleischer. It is now public domain.
After a short live action performance by the Royal Samoans, Bimbo appears on screen playing a ukulele while riding in a motorboat. The motorboat goes faster and faster, until it crashes into a tropical island. Bimbo flies into the air and lands in another boat with a topless (except for a strategically placed lei) and dark-skinned Betty Boop in it.
Bimbo and Betty, after nearly falling down a waterfall, are flung from the boat into a clearing surrounded by hostile trees, who torment the two. A group of savages appears, but Bimbo disguises himself by painting his face and sticking a bone in his hair. Bimbo is treated as an honored guest, and Betty dances the hula. A sudden rainstorm washes off Bimbo's disguise, and he and Betty are chased by the savages until they reach Betty's canoe and take off down the river. When it seems that they are alone, the two proceed to kiss in private behind an umbrella (with a convenient hole).
Notes:
Betty's hula dance was a visual high point of this episode and appears to be closely modeled on the hula dancer that appeared in the opening live action sequence (though the dancer was not "topless" as Betty is). This is one of the more apparent examples of the rotoscope technique which the Fleisher Studio used for realistic animation. The hula sequence was later reused for Betty's cameo in 1933's Popeye the Sailor and in 1934's Betty Boop's Rise to Fame.

Polynesian music culture got mad representation in early cartoons. The Royal Samoans were guest stars on a Betty cartoon, and yes the depiction of the natives left a lot to be desired.

the faces and behavior were caricatures, but the music and dance were authentic. As were the the voices. Pretty good for 1932 . Betty was 16 in 1923 so she's 25 in this.

People are simply not as pridefully ignorant as they used to be. What do Hawaiians and African Tribes have to do with one another? Nothing. But back then all coloured folks blended together. Why even bother making a distinction when those people don't really matter.

this show featured black bands and like this episode Hawaiian bands before the show started, I don't think it was racist, it was actually the complete opposite for it's time. Also this would get played because Bettie was a feminist. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tK6Ty-uLIwM.html

@@TheLouis3877 Errr... You're the racist one, dude. Why did you think of "African Tribes"? People from the Pacific, Melanesians and Austronesians (like the autochtones from Hawaii) actually used to wear such ornaments made from bones and coral like the ones depicted here. Lots of Papuans still do. Not to say that the representation in the cartoon is not somehow problematic or cared for anthropologic realism , but your mentioning of African Tribes and your uncomprehension as to how Africans are related to Hawaiians is erronous.

The Royal Samoans with Miri the hula dancer were under contract to Paramount. They would show this cartoon a couple of weeks before they did a live appearance in the theater. The act was what you see here, dancing, slap dancing singing. They would invite the audience to hula, popular with both the males, because of Miri, and the ladies because of the bare chested islanders. Betty was roto scoped from the footage at the beginning. This scene was later used in the first Popeye episode.

The reference woman for the character was called Esther Jones, an African-American jazz singer who lived in Harlem, NY. Also known as "Baby Esther" she was never recognized by the media, and lived in the shadow of this whitening throughout her career. Baby Esther performed in unremarkable cabarets in Harlem, with her unmistakable voice and sounds like “boop-boop-a-doops” constantly imitated by the character Betty Boop who had the same timbre as “baby” and carried the same aesthetic. Initially the character was inserted as a black woman, as in the animation already shown in an episode of Popeye, but then she was transformed into a white woman before being finally taken off the air. It is estimated that it raised millions of dollars in TV and products. In 1932, artist Helen Kane wanted to claim recognition with Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer, claiming that he had inspired all of her appearance and personality in her but was soon cut off because Baby Esther's manager proved that Helen had copied her artist when he saw her performing in 1928 at the Everglades Club and collected several references adapting for her performance of "Poop Poop Padoop" in the musical Good Boy and in the song "I Wanna Be Loved by You", which made the white woman famous overnight . Betty Boop still represents a lot, especially an era filled with racist and sexist stereotypes that lurked and still surround the entertainment industry today. But I can already say that the woman behind it was never rewarded and died young. Baby Esther was limited to being known only in her area while making money from her timbre, aesthetics and essence, having her role stolen by a white Broadway artist, who on top wanted merits for a character created based on Esther. Same shit that still happens to countless black artists who have their spotlight stolen and don't get the opportunities they really deserve.

No. Not true. Helen Kane was performing in her style at least as early as 1923. However, "Baby singing" could be traced as early as 1903. And "Scatting" could be traced as early as 1916. What any of that had to do with Li'l Esther, you'll need to ask internet trolls...
@emmaprior7402
@emmaprior7402 2 года назад
Betty Boop was 100% based on Helen Kane, she just lost the court case because she wasn't the first/only one to do the baby style jazz singing. Esther Jones was 11 years old when Kane sued Fleischer studios, no mention of her in why Kane lost the case. As important as it is to give black women recognition that has been stolen from them, Betty Boop is not one of them.

Contrary to a popular meme that's floating around, Jones never sued over Betty Boop. She sued KANE for stealing her act. It was Kane who sued the Fleischers. Also, THIS is Betty's first appearance in ANY cartoon: www.fleischerstudios.com/uploads/1/7/4/1/17419695/published/7890722.jpg The same coloring as her later B&W appearances, (other than this cartoon) so I don't know what "color change" you're talking about.
