Just found out that Betty White just passed away and going through videos of her. She was so talented and entertaining. She will be missed by many. RIP Betty White
This was the first role I ever saw Betty play. I was 9 years old, and I though she was a terrible person. That goes to show you what a terrific actor she is.
Ikr.....and she couldn't be lovelier or kinder on talk shows, such a good sport too. At times her sense of humor is wicked to the point of bordering on smutty---totally unexpected from a woman of her age and the era in which she was raised. Not judging bec it doesn't offend me....but it will make people sit up and take notice. Kudos to Betty for her boldness.
She was able to portray very different characters in her 80+ year career. Here, Sue Ann was ruthless. On the Golden Girls, Rose was kind and very naive. Elka on Hot in Cleveland was blunt to the point of having no filer. On games shows as herself, she was warm and kind to both the celebs and the audience members. However, all characters that she played had perfect comedic timing. We shall not see the likes of her again. God Speed Betty (1922-2021).
EXACTLY! I was about the same age, watched that show (and Bob Newhart, and Carol Burnett…) every week. Sue Ann kind of cemented my earliest understanding of what a, ummm….snooty b*** was!
Betty was extremely lucky that she got two major roles on hugely popular TV series in which she was able to play two completely different characters - one conniving and crafty and mean, and the other clueless and decent and nice. And she was a good enough actress to pull off both women perfectly. She acknowledged how lucky she'd been in her career.
Betty was in everything. Plays, movies, tv movies, mini-series, talk shows, award shows, variety shows, commercials, her own shows and the 3 shows she's most known for. She played every kind of character there is.
Luck might get you the part but if you don't have talent you're not going to be successful. Betty was the reason those characters became famous, not luck.
I used to watch Betty White in “Life With Elizabeth.” I was in grade school then. Have loved her ever since, and I’m now 77. RIP Betty, you were one in a million.
Bit of trivia---Mary and Betty were actually very close friends even before the Mary Tyler Moore show came on. When the Sue Ann part became available, Mary even told Betty ahead of time the part cannot be guaranteed because of their friendship. We'll, thankfully it never became an issue bc Betty NAILED the role, no other actress was even close !
You may well be right that she ranks with Lucy and Carol. Can't speak for all time because I have not seen every female comedienne in history. Of course, neither have you.
@@mja91352 you're right on that bro I haven't seen every female comedian but the ones I have seen Betty White ranks right up there with them in my opinion!
I loved the Mary Tyler Moore show and everyone on it. I have the entire set of shows, one day I will binge watch. RIP 🙏 Mary Valerie and Georgia. I love 💘 all of you. 💘 from a Canadian fan forever. Happy belated birthday 🎂 Betty White 💓.
Omg I wish I had the entire set. I've tried buying any of the seasons & can't. I only found this show on RU-vid & started watching it after I found & watched Rhoda.
@@kahlodiego5299 It was a depressing day in Season 6 when she moved into that dark apartment. Of course, the show was never the same after that, save for a few good epis in Season 6 at the start. And Joe was all wrong for Mary. She should have picked Dan and ended up with him IMO. A mistake the show made.
@@m.e.d.7997 I actually liked the second apartment too. I wouldn't have minded living there. It seemed more upscale. I loved the terrace where you could look out over the city. I liked her white couch and the blue & white coffee table. She had a big bedroom & a big bathroom (remember when Lou walked in on her while she was taking a bubble bath, and then Murray and Ted walked in too, LOL!)
I remember watching this show every Saturday night for the first 3 season. Going off the College ruins your TV viewing habits. Why did it never occur to me how strange it was that they had bookcases built into the steps leading to "Mary's front door". What a novel idea. You see it a lot in "Tiny Homes" today. One of the best written, best acting and just an all around great show. It was sad to loose four veteran actors of this show in 2021. Aging is a factor. Most of the actors who died in 2021 lived a good rich life well into their 90s. BW being the exception who almost made it to her 100 birth age. I hate to drum up the old adage-"They just don't make sitcom's like this much anymore. I know as we age we long for what we perceive as a better time or a less complicated time. I may be wrong.
i was thinking thr samething about this year being one where many actors in mid nineties left us. been with us so long and so many funny and happy memories. something to live up to.
I never understood why Mary was nice to Sue Ann. She invited Sue Ann to her parties, she once called her a "friend," and she never answered back when Sue Ann insulted her. If I knew someone like Sue Ann I wouldn't give her the time of day!
Mary Richards was the product of a conservative, polite, Presbyterian upbringing in Roseberg, MN in the forties and fifties She was introduced to feminism as an adult with a couple years of college and already in the workforce for a good eight to ten years. Self assertiveness was generally uncomfortable for her but improved as the show progressed. New Yorker Rhoda would never have put up with a tenth of Sue Ann's crap.
Betty White’s subtle facial expressions are just beyond genius … and not just in comedies. There’s a clip where she played an old widow of a soldier whose body was returned long after his death. And her expressions will move you to tears. What a genuine once in a hundred years treasure.
MTM changed her hairstyles quite a bit until she settled on a style later in the show. She used to do the Priscilla Presley thing of dyeing her hair black, wearing it long and big but then opting for a far more natural and very flattering golden brown shade. Her peach cardigan here paired with the very pale gray slacks and a button front blouse were classic casualwear in the seventies.
I'm not sure she was dying her hair dark. Her hair was very dark earlier on the Dick Van Dyke show. Then later in the MTM show, the lighter color was probably because she was going grey underneath the dye so the dye over it didn't make her hair as dark. That happens a lot when people get older. I know friends, (I'm 60) who dye their hair with the same color year after year, but their natural color is getting greyer and greyer so the dye doesn't get as dark over what it's hiding.
@@michelepaccione8806 ....I recall MTM admitting to Oprah that her 1970-71 long hair included hair pieces. Maybe due to very early 70s video quality her hair looked (to me) so obviously dyed bec of the one flat tone really deep hair color products often give. Mary's hair eventually had some highlights but then in the Fall of 1972 , the style, color and length completely changed.
That was a wig. The long hair that Mary had the first couple seasons was not her own hair. It was a heavy wig which she disliked, and they finally discarded it.
Very few people know how close friends Betty and Mary were in real life, even before Betty came on the show to play Sue Ann. Mary and Betty were friends for life. They never played up their friendship for everybody to know. When Mary passed, Betty was devastated. Now they can join together up there.
Best show of that era. Even dinner was put on hold. All the actors played their hearts 💕 out. Betty White will ALWAYS steal our hearts with her adorable, naughty and witty nature. Hope she makes it to her 100th birthday 🎂 🥳
That Betty could convincingly play roles like Sue Ann AND Rose is a testament to how talented she was. And I'm honestly glad that when Golden Girls came around, she wound up as Rose and not Blanche. Not only was she perfect as Rose, but Rue McClanahan was just as perfect as Blanche.
She had too much of this characters personality in the first season of Golden Girls. She gave it up on the second season and Rose became an innocent airhead with a unique wholesome wisdom ❤️😄
I'm a Jewish sue Ann Nivens y never realized it. Just this fine morning a dim witted volunteer at this ever so fine nursing home poked her tiny little head in my door y reminded me that Dolly parton y Judas priest recently played together at the apparent country y music award ceremony. The song was Jolene about a woman who sings her heart out about another begging her not to take her spouse. Personally, I wish Jolene was a friend of mine I could have used her before all five of my weddings, y gladly so.
still remember her Sue Ann Niven asking Mary..."mary..do u know what happens when u overcook veal prince orloff..It dies"....and her slamming the oven shut with her knee.....so funny......their has never been a show like that with a great cast of characters like ..Rhoda..Phyllis..Ted baxter...Mary..Lou Grant...Murray...Georgette...even Gordie the weatherman ...great great show!!!!
@@DavidLS1 Hilarious!!!.."a little seltzer down ur pants"...as much as i loved it back then..rewatching now...i have so much more appreciation for MTM and her acting skills along with all the rest..just an all around brilliant show!!
I know. I mostly thought of her as the host for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I didn't know she could play a character like Sue Ann. I'm so glad she did!
Her wit and sarcasm was on point plus she was very attractive i would love to be able to watch re-runs i dont really like her on golden girls Bea Arthurs was also good in a old sitcom Maude which she was very funny
What people don't realize is that many decades ago the most powerful witches in all the lands pooled their magic together and created Betty White. It is written in stone that, whether alive or passed on, her magic will always surround us.
Betty White was a true credit to the trade!! (I ama comedian also) You made it here on Earth, and in Heaven you will " Make it after all!!" .... And oh ya, watch "Mosh PItt Kitties"!! (RU-vid, Tik Tok and FB)
Sue Ann Nivens, became a showcase for White’s wicked wit, and brilliant comic timing. This is not Rose from the Golden Girls (the first airhead she ever played). Long before the Golden Girls, this was Betty White at her most savagely, cheerfully wickedly funny. Long before Martha Stewart, there was Sue Ann Nivens, a strong female character, a ruthless, man eating business woman, dishing out venom with wholesome cheer, as The Happy Homemaker. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yUFmxLYGIpo.html
