My biggest issue when showing this band to musicians... they try so hard to dissect while listening for the first time

I have been exactly where you are halfway through this video, told a friend that this band tries too hard to be complex, specifically with this album Parallax II, I was a fan of Coma Ecliptic. It only took me a couple more years of broadening my music scope and listening to Colors alot to sit back and see what these guys are about. Its not pretentiousness, and its ultimately not that hard to follow to a active music listener. My interpretation is its musical freedom, to write and perform what the artist wants to. The stories and music from these guys is chaotically liberating to me.

The shifting time signatures are one of my favorite aspects of btbam, but I get why it's not an easy listen on the first run. Even after thousands of listens these albums don't get old.

Also, definitely NOT the first song I'd show a prospective btbam fan haha

You're frustration with time signatures will turn to appreciation and enjoyment and potentially obsession, if you give it a chance. Not much for first timers, but they've got a lot of you dig deep. More BTBAM will do you well. Check out ants of the sky

You have heard lead singer Tommy Rogers before. He was one of the 11 singers on Ayreon's The Day That the World Breaks Down.

Rather extensive discography, definitely worth more reactions. They had a new album release this past year, maybe try something from that? Human is Hell, Never Seen/Future Shock or Bad Habits.

For me, the appeal of time signature changes in a song is not only to keep you guessing, but also to instill a bit of chaos into the mix. A lot of their changes have very clear direction and fit the song well. I get why some people don't like it, but especially in their heavy sections, that added chaos just hits home

A lot of BTBAM's music is of a similar style. They change time signatures a lot, but they usually will have 1-3 good-size sections of steady melodic rhythms and clean vocals. They'll also include some weird genre changes and sound effects from time to time as well. Took me a while to get used to it, but now BTBAM is probably one of my favorite bands because of how playful and sporadic they are, on top of some great, steady musical sections. I might recommend the song "Disease, Injury, Madness," or if you want something a little steadier and fun, check out "Voice of Trespass" (it's a serious good time).

Out of curiosity, when you're just listening to new music, do you actively try and figure the time sig out before taking the music in as a whole? Approaching it as a counting contest will definitely make it tough to enjoy. I find BTBAM is sort of like a modern-ish art situation - You're looking at it for the first time (and possibly quite a few times after that) and you're thinking damn this doesn't make sense and I don't like it! But after revisiting it a few times, the genius reveals itself. I'd wager the large majority of BTBAM fans became fans in this way. Not many people, even if they're into extreme prog/death metal, hear BTBAM for the first time and immediately love it.

Yes I always find the time signature so that I can groove to the song.

BTBAM is def one of those bands where it sounds incredibly different the 1st, 5th, 10th, and 100th time. It's so jarring that on a first listen you're just being thrown around and trying to orient yourself, but with every further listen you start to examine the music in more detail, that's why I love stuff like BTBAM; so much replayability.

Took me a couple years before I actually tried to get into BTBAM. After musically clicking with me they have actually felt so rewarding to listen to

First song I ever heard was Sun of Nothing. I was an instant fan 1000% and now they're my favorite band by miles. I do agree though, every listen you notice little nuances that didn't stick out the first time, fifth time, or even hundredth time listening through. I've been a prog/tech death fan forever though, so it was probably a bit easier to latch onto immediately.

2 cents from a huge btbam fan- I think part of the appeal of those certain intricate and jarring sections is specifically that you absolutely DO NOT get it at first. It’s bewildering by design. To me it’s what keeps me coming back. I love their melodies and hooks, but man I love how the confusing parts of theirs will totally grow on you and make more and more sense if you let it marinate in your brain meat. Btbam has ruined so many bands for me that play songs that “click” right away- I’m not saying that one art is intrinsically better than another art, I’m just saying I’ve really acquired the taste for their unpredictable style. Cheers, man! Thanks for your video!

I don't know if anyone else mentioned, but all of their music since '07 are concept albums that are (as you would expect) best enjoyed in full front to back. Lots of great inter-song transitions and thematic returns throughout. I don't even know what to recommend for your next one... but I may as well mention my favourite btbam song Fossil Genera - A Feed From Cloud Mountain

Man, you have to react to Skyfire - Dimensions Unseen. It is one of the most melodic death metal songs I've ever heard. The break in the middle is something cosmic for me. It's a Swedish band and the song is from their first studio album back in 2001, Timeless Departure.

its so funny how your first knee jerk response is to count time signatures and need to establish a symmetrical groove. of all the qualities of music, that feels the most dull to me. much respect though, shows how differently people can interpret music.
