Light, strong, powerful, and pretty. What more could you ask for? Oh yea, a price tag under $1,000. You got it. The Beulah Opal G2 is a contender in the saltwater rod category and it is very nicely finished to boot, with a killer grip system on the 10,11, and 12 that offers not only an upper hand but a way to choke up while casting and make the rod load with ease.

Nice rod but I don’t think they’re available here in Australia. On another point this is without doubt the most informative site on fly fishing I’ve ever seen

Thanks Sean, appreciate the support. We ship to Australia but I understand the taxes on inbound product are steep.

Which rio outbound do you prefer for Baja work? The full intermediate or the hover/intermediate with a floating running line? Looking to pick up some gear from Red's for a trip to Hawaii and wanted a line I could use for GT in some bigger water, I also would like the line to be suited first and foremost for Baja fishing though.

The F/H/I for me, the full Intermediate is too hard to pick up and lay down if you have to recast a longer shot. The running line tends to lift the head up if you strip it a few times fast and gets it closer to the surface. This allows you to be faster on moving the fly around and recasting.

Great review Joe. What do you think of the 9 wt for Bolivia for golden dorado? Wish the made the extended grip on the 9 wt.
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop Год назад
Oh I think it would be great as long as you have a buff line with a fairly short head. This #9 is grumpy with light tapers, so use the RIO Warmwater Predator and I think it will be excellent.

@@redsflyshop I’m loaded up and Predator Floating, Hover and Sink tips for trip. I ordered the 10 wt instead as I cannot pass up that rod handle. Going to take the 10# also just trying to decide which of the three lines would be most useful for Bolivia. Any suggestions?

I have the Beulah Opal 10 weight (purchased in 2020) and the rod fishes and looks great. I’ve caught small tarpon and large jacks with it. I’m curious what the difference/improvements are with the G2? Is it faster action? Thank you.

Lighter, tougher. The Graphene material used in the G2 is just simply lighter and stronger. Ingredient upgrade. Glad to hear the OG is working for you! Those are great rods.

Joe, I heard you say the swing weight is light because of those titanium snake guides… I would say the taper and weight distribution of the rod as a whole, have more influence on the swing weight, wouldn’t you agree? When most of the weight is towards the butt section, it will feel light in hand. I guess one can argue, this is always the case since the reel, handle and thicker blank are all down at the butt section, so probably taper is number one factor. I’d like to hear your thoughts, thanks.

The tip feels incredibly light yet powerful, I have to assume Titanium vs. Stainless Steel helps the vibe.

Hi, I am wondering how you would rate the G2 opal 8 weight against other contemporary saltwater rods? I'm shopping for an 8 weight all rounder/bonefish/saltwater rod. I'm considering some big budget, big name rods as well (Scott, Loomis, Orvis, Winston) but I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the Beulah. Thanks, and thanks for all the great content you guys put up!

Pure performance, it's a contender. The T and T Sextant is prettier, maybe "nicer" to cast. The Winston AIR Salt has equal power, maybe a prettier finish? It's right there as far as raw performance goes. The NRX+ is a really nice rod, just hard to get your hands on. Can't speak to Scott or Orvis. Never sold those or touched 'em.

@@redsflyshop You NEED to cast an 8, 9, and 11 Meridian...I mean it. You MUST cast those rods.

I've had issues with breakage, even with top of the line rods. Would this be a better bet to avoid that?
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop Год назад
I just got back from another Tarpon trip using primarily the Opal G2 990-4, it's razor sharp. No breakage yet, we did break one rod on this but it wasn't a Beulah.

I’ve got a Riptide I need to setup and was liking this in a 10 wt. for Chesapeake bay striper and bull drum.
@redsflyshop
@redsflyshop 9 месяцев назад
Oh that would be an excellent match, Riptides can be very hard to find. We have a few of the Frost Black and Frost Silver right now, if you wait too long it could be many months before they are available anywhere! Just fair warning! :)@@OneofuuuuS

Aesthetically it looks butt ugly. But the idea is nice. Scott has 8.5ft salt water rods too, so if the less leverage of a shorter rod feel much more comfortable that would be my choice

Agree the force grip is not exactly something we are used to seeing as a beauty. But honestly flipping 9.5s and 10ft all day for salt flats I bet that grip helps with fatigue TREMENDOUSLY.
