Eddie Murphy's mega-movie star status was secured after 48 Hours when he played the iconic role of Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop.
Released in 1984, and directed by Martin Brest, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Starring Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, Paul Reiser, Ronny Cox, Jonathan Banks, Lisa Eilbacher and a cameo appearance by Damon Wayans.
The sequel, helmed by the late and great Tony Scott, was released in 1987 and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song "Shakedown". Starring Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Ronny Cox, Paul Reiser, Brigitte Nielsen, Dan Stockwell, Gilbert Gottfried, and a cameo appearance by a very young Chris Rock.

Don't let comments preventing you for watching part 3 also, not only it's great, but also if you are enjoying a franchise there is no reason for you not to check it. Amazing movie also, and the favorite of many, so you never know. If you follow what comments say you will never experience how a sequel can ruin a franchise (not saying it's the case) but if you only react to what people tell you, you are excluding yourself from it.

This is one of those rare R rated comedies from the 80s where the lead actor and supporting actress don't go to bed. There are movies where that works, but it would have complicated everything. I really like Axel and Jenny's relationship. They're friends, and Axel is your standard young, horny guy, but they're not trying to sleep together. The movie keeps the focus where it belongs and it works to the movie's benefit.

The reason Bogomil had Taggart and Rosewood following Foley was because Foley was out of his jurisdiction, investigating a crime without the permission of local law enforcement. They couldn't just have him running around without authorization. Since there was no active investigation into Maitland at that point, all they had was a harassment complaint against Foley (as far as they knew he was the one in the wrong).

Axel using the alias "Richard James" is a nod to '80s Funk/R&B icon Rick James, who was writer and producer of Murphy's 1985 Pop/Funk album "How Could It Be," which included the hit single, "Party All the Time." Also, the entire dialogue about the parking tickets was improvised by Murphy and Gottfried. Dean Stockwell (Cain) also played Al Calavicci on Quantum Leap.

Beverly Hills Cop was Eddie's first time being the main star on a film. Before this they paired him with other stars like Nick Nolte in 48 Hours and Dan Akroyd in Trading Places. From there he went on to do other great movies like The Golden Child, Coming To America, Harlem Nights, Boomerang, and The Nutty Professor 1&2. He had two standups that were great as well called Delirious and Raw. You should check out all of Eddie's work, he definitely was one of the biggest stars in the world when he was young.

YES!! One of the funniest action comedy movies ever made! Originally, Sylvester Stallone was going to star in the film and even did rewrites to the script, as he wanted the film to be darker, violent and more action packed. When Paramount executives read the script, it was rejected and Stallone turned his script into the 1986 action thriller COBRA.

I was born in 1955 and you're right, growing up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s was a blast. These days pretty much suck, but decades ago we had so much more autonomy and fun. The Detroit cop cars had the obsolete gumball Mars lights but of course the Beverly Hills cops had the latest light bars on theirs.

Favorite fun fact I read about the 1st movie is that at 21:36 Eddie Murphy adlibs the "supercop" story and the actor playing Taggart can't hold in his laugh & has to put his head down to try and cover up his laughter. And yes that was Damon Wayans ( funny how as a kid watching this, his small roll & the small role of Balky were one's we remembered & frequently quoted or just laughed at hysterically.....especially Balky's sqeaky response to Axel's "Git tha fuk outta here"😂🤣😂)

Gil Hill, who played Inspector Todd, was the Inspector in charge of the Homicide Division in Detroit during these two films. He had risen to national prominence through his ability to obtain confessions, as well as his participation in the task force investigating the Atlanta child murders eventually linked to Wayne Williams. After he retired, he moved into politics, becoming a councilman and having an unsuccessful mayoral run. In 2016, an allegation was made by a former hit man that Hill had tried to pay him $125,000 to kill drug dealer and FBI informant "White Boy Rick" Wersche, Jr. to avoid uncovering corruption in the Detroit PD, detailed in the documentary "White Boy".

I remember hearing that, a few friends were truckers. The single light vs light bar seemed to be a regional/financial thing. They all started out single light (or bubblegum machines) and later transitioned to the light bar. Depending on how well the local PD or sheriff's office was doing probably determined how quickly they made the change. The ones they have now are almost indistinguishable from a luggage rack.

I love how the young generation that reacts to the cinema of the 80s and 90s is surprised with the practical effects or action scenes filmed in a real way, something that is almost never seen nowadays in today's cinema, where everything has been replaced by CGI that leaves much to be desired and lacks to evolve to deceive us. I love to have lived those times, it was very common to see real action scenes in those movies, for example in Demolition Man and Lethal Weapon 3 they made real buildings explode and demolish, in The Fugitive they derailed a real train, in Face Off and Speed they made real planes crash and explode, today that way of filming no longer exists.

Mikey's death really hits people in how unflinchingly the cold-blooded murder was shown. The first movie was at the forefront of pop culture at the time, from the soundtrack to happening at the right time in Eddie Murphy's career, in a year that was heavy with pop music in soundtracks and in the mainstream. It came a year after the "Thriller" video while MTV was expanding, "Footloose," Ghostbusters, Purple Rain, and the beginning of "Miami Vice". The style of the sequel is a result of how impactful "Top Gun" was. Producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer clearly wanted Tony Scott to do what he did with "Top Gun." Being a baby boomer in the 1980s might have some perks, but you might have a better appreciation of the 1980s had you been younger and without adult responsibilities, like born in the late 1970s. It was excellent for kids regarding toys, arcades and video games, the thrill of early MTV, cartoons, and kids movies.

I think the big, janky-looking cop lights on the Detroit cars might be accurate for the time. But mostly I think they wanted to emphasize that everything in Detroit, including the police, is old and run down, compared with Beverly Hills where even the police department is lavishly funded and high tech.

fun fact the public/trucker slang for the big single red or blue light on top of the cop cars back then were called Bubble Gum Ball Lights...because they looked like/resembled a Bubble Gum Machine.

🎬 9:58 THAT SUIT that Eddie Murphy is laughing at is the same type used in his no-holds barred stand-up comedy show, _Eddie Murphy: RAW._ Judging by his reaction, it doesn't look like Eddie was expecting to see that. 😆 🤣 😂 🎥

My Nextel I90 phone had that ring tone also. Aw... the old days... Less than a year from being 40 years old. Thanks for the reminder... love the reaction! May your channel continue to grow, and here's wishing nothing but the best for you all those you love! Peace girl! Stay vigilant and keep working on becoming the best version of yourself. The world, in general, is in darker times than we've seen since the fall of Rome. The light comes from within us. Don't ever let anything extinguish it! Stay positive to the end! Controversial opinion: the 3rd movie is also good. Comments will say otherwise, but, with the fourth movie coming out in a couple weeks, it would be cool to see the 3rd on here too. Everyone else always skips it because it doesn’t have certain characters in.

That actor who does come out in Quantum Leap also DID COME OUT in at least one or two Columbo episodes. The one I recall he was like some heir to his father's sports franchise fortune and Robert Culp killed him and Columbo had to figure that murder. I'm almost sure he came out in another Columbo episode, but I can't remember. Now I remember, he came out in another episode where Columbo and his wife won some cruise ship vacation. He is accused of murdering a female singer and Columbo has to figure out who the real murderer is. Also, Beverly Hills Cop 2 reminds me a lot of the TV series MacGyver from the '80s, with MacGyver using all sorts of little science tricks to fake palm prints and escape from the bad guys. And, I thinks yes, that superglue trick is real cause I believe if you watch those detective and FBI shows, they mention those kind of tricks to lift finger prints.

@BillTheScribe

Police lights back then had one bulb that stayed on all the time. There was a reflector inside the dome that spun around like a really fast lighthouse. From any one spot, it just flashed, but if you looked at it on the buildings around, you could see it move. Murphy's first movie was 48 Hours. It was a sort for Buddy Cop action comedy that would be great for this channel. It has one iconic line that still gets said. As a teen when this movie came out, you were almost legally bound to know how to play that ringtone songs on the keyboard at the music store in the mall. His friend was Lisa Eilbacher, who had a big role in An Officer and a Gentleman. The coffee things is not accurate.
