Yeah, I liked Eddie a lot better during that phase in his career. Had all his comedy tapes, which you couldn't play even 5 seconds of around the parents. Even his final Beverly Hills Cop movie had lost so much of the character.

Fun fact: Axel laughing at the leather suits when he first arrives to Beverly Hills is a reference he made about the same types of leather suits he wears to his standup comedy shows at the same time period. Like in "Delirious" 1983.

Espresso with a twist of lemon is called _Espresso Romano._ It can be made with a twist, or a slice of lemon, or a bit of lemon juice. It is popular in Campania. It was also the most common way espresso used to be served in Italian restaurants in NYC, as most were owned by Neapolitan immigrants.

Axel not being allowed to work on the case of murder of his friend, is standard in all polices all over the world. If you are emotively or having friends or family connected with the case of investigation (especially murder) you are gonna be off the case instant.

When Reinhold (Rosewood) and Ashton (Taggart) were auditioning for their roles, Reinhold came up with the idea that since they are partners, they should behave as an old, married couple. He then picked up a health magazine and started to read it randomly (the five pounds of red meat stuff). Ashton got the picture and started to behave annoyed and angry. They delivered it so good that not only they got the parts, the gag was included in the script.

@@glenncabacungan9269 Interestingly, Stallone was first cast for the role of Foley, but he had such over-the-top ideas that were considered either too expensive or simply stupid. After he was dismissed, he made _Cobra_ from those ideas. (Probably this is why a poster of that film hangs in Rosewood's bedroom in BHC 2 much to Foley's fright.)

Victor's henchman, who killed Axel's friend, is played by Jonathan Banks who also plays the role of the reluctant bad guy Mike Ehrmantraut on "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul." On how easy it is for Axel to talk his way into things: Before 9/11 the world was very different. People were a lot less concerned with being careful about things like ID. It wasn't as easy as Eddie Murphy makes it look, of course, but it was a lot easier than now.
@rume6951

It's not overly difficult even now. As long as you act like you're supposed to be there and don't make unreasonable demands, most people tend to buy it. It's herd mentality I guess. Same as when people apologize to the twitter mobs for nothing. Folks just don't want to be hassled. Granted in a high security area it would be more difficult, but that's always been the case. For most places though, once you're inside the perimeter, the lower level people will just go with it. You only start getting in trouble when dealing with supervisors. I have an an uncle that has gotten by in life solely by pulling cons like that. It is astonishing what you can get by with having the right attitude, enough nerve, and lack of any sense of shame or remorse..

This was the first Eddie Murphy film I saw, ironically it was released the year I was born. Originally the film was written to be a Sylvester Stallone action film, all the comedy dialogue was improvised after casting Murphy. So there were dramatic scenes with comedic dialogue. The Second and third were written to be more comedic scenes. But you have to watch the second and third films to see the difference. At 23:12 when Chief Hubbard ask if he’s the man who wrecked the buffet that was sarcastic question.

One thing most people don't think about when they meet is their background and how much of their experience is the reason for what the occupation they have is shaped by that. This movie shows three childhood friends that grew up in very rough streets. One went to California and became the director of an upscale art gallery, one became a cop, and one stayed in the criminal underworld. They stayed a family but took different paths in life, and the story bears that connection between them out. As for not wanting Foley to investigate the case... Foley could not be objective because of that personal investment and as a witness, his testimony would be thrown out since it will be corrupted by his investigation and personal involvement and altering his views on the facts of the case. If Maitlan guards had not started a firefight and Maitlan would have been brought to trial then Foleys' investigation would have been thrown out and only Maitlans' defense teams' version of events concerning the physical evidence would be considered in the case. In short, most likely, Maitlan would have walked free. Oh, Jessie's testimony is highly questionable as her association with Foley and her fear that Foley and herself would be killed if she testified against him could destroy the case against Maitlan. This may sound unfair, but if you think of the flipside of the situation and consider that someone gets murdered in Detroit and the immediate evidence points to Maitlan but he's innocent, all you would have is Bearer Bonds and cocaine being smuggled but the owner might know nothing of what his employees were doing. Something, in real life, happened similar to this with a large tech company and all evidence pointed to the owner and CEO until it was found that the ringleader was not even an employee of the company. Turns out that she was not just involved in smuggling drugs but in human trafficking and the CEO helped in taking her and her operation down. I'm so sorry for the long comment but it kind of grew as I was typing.

I don't like coffee with lemon juice, but a little lemon extract is fine in a cafe au lait, especially with a dash of sugar. You get the lemon cream thing going, with the coffee as a bass note. The thing that Axel does in the warehouse, where he pretends to be an investigator, is actually a very common form of "social hack." So common it even has a name: The Bavarian Fire Drill. People are trained from childhood to respond to authority figures with obedience, and the Bavarian Fire Drill is a form of con where you act like an authority figure and keep barking out orders at people so that they act on their instinct to obey rather than stop and think about what they are doing. If you do it with confidence, it's amazingly effective.

Quite a few cops were trouble makers in their youth. As a youngster and in Foley's neighborhood, stealing a car for a joy ride was probably considered harmless fun (To him). Like it's not bad because he didn't have a gun or hurt anyone. His friend clearly went further down that path. Though if you look deeper, it gets a little depressing for a comedy movie. Getting caught for the stolen car likely led him down that path. The getting caught part that is. They say that jail is like school for crime. What could have been a one time thing, or a youthful experience that he got out of his system (not saying any crime like stealing cars is okay) and ended up on a different path like Foley or other people who were trouble causers in their youth. But once he was in the system he started learning more how to commit bigger crimes, and what crimes pay better which was enticing. Point being that if Foley had gotten caught or if his friend had ratted him out, he'd just as likely have turned out the same way.

Eddie was a comedy god at this point and he was still in his early 20s. He always seems to be playing parts that were written for people 10 to 15 years older. But you buy it, because Eddie has this confidence that made him seem way older than he was. His first movie, 48 hours, even more so. He just radiates charisma and confidence, just like in his stand up comedy and when he first hit SNL.. a show he singlehandedly saved btw.. that show was on its death bed when Eddie broke out.

Axel Foley's "charming Con-man Hero" character is SUCH fun to watch! It totally makes Beverly Hills Cop (1 & 2) as great as it is. Glad you seemed to enjoy it as well. Oh, an the joke where he acted like he was Victor's gay lover & said he had "Herpes Symplex 10", if even MORE funny when you realize it just means he has a Canker sore (or cold sore?). As opposed to something severe. (this was at the height of the AIDS scare, which is why it was reasonable that it worked.)

Oh, lol! So there actually is a 10th simplex of herpes? 😂 I thought he was just taking herpes simplex 2 and dialing it up to 11 just to make it sound worse. That makes it way funnier!

Now that you've seen Beverly Hills Cop and got a taste of Eddie Murphy, and having seen your previous reactions (especially Airplane!), I'd recommend trying Trading Places. It's a movie that's most famous for two things, and I reckon you'll get a real kick out of it. What?? Dan Ackroyd's forlorn Santa Claus and the revealed value of Randolph and Mortimer's bet. Obviously.

Omg.. CLASSIC…. XD So one note: When Axel checks into the hotel in Beverly Hills, the front desk girl looks up his reservation on a computer system. That wouldn’t be unusual *today* , but back then, the majority of hotels around the country would have probably used physical logbooks for records. The implication, along with how nice the lobby looked, was that this was a *fancy* (expensive) hotel. Even more so with the entire police department being computerized. In many of these scenes, Eddie Murphy was given free rein to improvise. The director would instruct the other actors to just try to impede Murphy by behaving like hotel staff, concierges, maître ds, etc. and Murphy would just come up with different ways to try to bluff past them. Buffet plate being $12.50. Back then a lunch plate where I lived was $3.99 and that was high.
@Tomani3905
@Tomani3905 3 года назад
Now imagine how those Eddie Murphy improv scenes would've turned out had they been performed by Sylvester Stallone, the actor that was originally cast as Axel Foley in this movie? (It's true! Stallone was the producer's first choice for the lead role!)

yea today a basic buffet would be 13 bucks. The higher end ones, like that one back then were the very high rated buffets, including steaks, seafood, and other things. These days those buffets run 50-100 bucks.

Two excellent movies you should consider: "L.A. Confidential", with Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, and Kevin Spacey "Road to Perdition", with Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jude Law, and Daniel Craig

you absolutely must watch the second part, I think it's better than the first, and then when you find some time, I recommend such films : Oscar ( 1991 ), STOP! OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT (1992), Avenging Angelo ( 2002 )

Although humour-wise it’s not up to this standard, I personally still find plenty to enjoy in _Beverly Hills Cop II_ (which came out three years later, in 1987) despite this. Ronny Cox (Bogomil), Judge Reinhold (Billy Rosewood), John Ashton (Taggart), Paul Reiser (Jeffrey) and Gil Hill (Inspector Todd) all appear in it. Tony Scott (the late brother of Ridley) directed it. _Beverly Hills Cop III_ (1994), however, is a bit disappointing; even though Gil Hill and Judge Reinhold come back, John Ashton, Ronny Cox and Paul Reiser are nowhere to be seen, and that alone means that a lot of the camaraderie and banter suffers.

This, 'Trading Places' & 'Coming to America' are my three favorite Eddie Murphy movies. All from the 1980's. As I recall, Sylvester Stalone was supposed to star in this movie but he couldn't do it so they went with Eddie Murphy.

1984, I was in high school and three of my friends worked at a local theater. Their manager was on vacation the week this came out and we had a party/private showing at midnight for 7 or 8 of us in the closed theater. 👍 As I recall... Having a couple cases of beer and a 3' bong in the theater doesn't hurt the entertainment value of this movie one bit.😋😏 Glad you enjoyed it.😎

This is the "renegade cop" genre. They break the rules, because society has too many restrictions to get the job done. The criminals have no restrictions, so the renegade cop plays the game, the same way they do. It was very popular in the 80's. A-team (former military , not cops), Nasty Boys, Knight Rider, Red Heat, Cobra. The list goes on and on.

Duaffy being introduced to all the hallmark of 80s action movies in one great movie: car chases with random property destruction, the hero hurled through a ground level window for no real reason, and fast-talking your way into free hotels, food, etc.

Bearer Bonds were a financial instrument that were worth a set amount (much like a savings bond at full value) but were not registered to any individual. The "Bearer" of the bond, the one holding it, was presumed to be the owner and could redeem it at any financial institution. They haven't really been used since 2010

Eddie Murphy was a god in this era. Golden Child, Trading Places, Coming to America... But honestly, the closest match to beverly hills cop is Lethal Weapon. Good few movies if you like the pace and action of the Beverly Hills Cops Trilogy
