Beware Of the Guard Player's Curse in BJJ

Today we've got a question from Sid who's has the "Curse of the Guard Player" in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
He says his sweeps, submission, etc, all of his guard stuff, is coming together nicely, but he is running into one huge problem...
He can be very offensive off his back, but anytime he gets on top of someone, say he sweeps them, but he can't hold them on the ground to save his life.
His BJJ coaches tell him he needs to develop his top game more.
He sends in the message, asking if I have any advice for him to improve his top game for Jiu-Jitsu.
Thanks for the question!
I'll give you a comparison between wrestlers/judoka and bottom players. I'll explain how both sides of the coin have issues developing the style of the other, and more.
I'll also address how I'd approach fixing either situation.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.

Yeah, I "gravitate" toward bottom position because gravity and the other guy conspire to put me there, heh...

You should be able to pass your own skilled guard or at least pressure the pass enough to score advantages threatening the pass or back. When you achieve this you’ll be around purple belt .. with the mention of being decent at attacking from side mount back etc This is was the hardest thing in jiu jitsu for me to achieve. I did it by using the passes the find hardest to deal with and ones that we able to get me to turtle to avoid to points/pin from time to time

Pick one focus on it . Then switch over once your able to score points ( sweep or pass) on higher belts ( good purple-brown belt) .. of course still pick up techniques for the other positions but every roll try to focus on the position your working on the most

I got smashed time and again as a white belt up to my 4th stripe. After that all that defensive practice helped me gain the ability to get to the top and hold it. Then the smooth transitions in and out of positions clicked and my game evolved tremendously. I'm a year and a half into my blue belt now. 3 1/2 years into my career. Keep at it no matter what. 💪🤙

I had this problem really bad, started at a gym where I was the youngest / smallest guy, naturally gravitated to a strong guard game. Got very successful with subs and sweeps from there. Eventually I got older and larger and started ending up on top more, often got lost and allowed myself to get swept back to guard where I was more confident. Funny enough what helped me was a broken rib. The months following it healing I still couldn't handle being stacked, inverting, most guard stuff or the possibility of bottom side control, and that forced me to learn how to stay safe and remain on top consistently for the following year. I still have a stronger bottom game than top, but overall have much more balance and confidence between the two after being forced to!

This was me at the beginning of my jiu jitsu, since I was getting smashed all the time and learned to play guard and retain it decently well. I felt so out of it when trying to pass and just felt like running into a brick wall. Then I suffered an injury which forced me to take a bit of a break from sparring, during which I did a bunch of drilling on just top position and now I love passing guards and hunting the back especially. So anyone who thinks they’ll never get better at passing, put time and thought into it and I promise you will see yourself improve👊🏻

Like chewy said, all it takes is practice. Take the next 3 months to practice a top dominant game. You're a white belt in every technique until you take the time to master it.

Thats how I was, I forced myself to focus on passing a lot and now I feel like that's my best part of my game. I'm still good off my back but I use it to sweep and get on top where I start the grind

I felt those cross choke problems. Joining a judo class is actually helping to fix that. I would always cut diagonal which gives armbars and triangles. But it was more the body dipping to the side that opens up the choke….. it felt so silly when I saw the difference. Still working on it but I can feel the difference in overall threat level go up.

I moved to BJJ after judo/wrestling. So, my bottom game is limited to sweeps and escapes to regain the top position. When the partner is heavier or more skillful I play Priit's defensive approach to survive meanwhile I manage to escape.

I’m a guard player too and never really had a problem keeping top position but only ever got it from sweeps because my guard passing sucked. I changed my attitude like Chewy suggests and I just keep track of every restart and flip flop. So if I started on bottom the next time I start from top. My passing has improved tremendously and I’m much more well rounded now but still prefer guard 😂

I did this for a while, then I just kept ending up on top and started to like being in top side control and front headlocks so now that’s my game and guard is my fall back

I don’t quite understand how this happens, because a big part of guard play is sweeping to top position. So if you’re fully utilizing the guard, you inevitably should find yourself in top position enough to get a lot of practice at it.

Me- Bottom is my happy place. Chewy is correct. My problem is not technical know how - it's mental.

I like sparring with guys that have a strong bottom game. Even if they beat me up they don’t exhaust me. However, someone with a good top game can sub me and exhaust me.

I'm a small guy so I play top game mostly. I suffer when we do king of the hill and I'm on bottom..wrestling up or standing up feels cheap in that scenario, and so I get smashed and passed.

Complete opposite. Learning to hold open guard. Spiderman. Lasso. All newbie skill levels. My sweeps are weak from an open guard. Naturally a top player. Grips. Takedown. Side or mount or back while they turtle. Submit or control. TLDR. Learning where I'm not naturally comfortable is very uncomfortable. TLDR 2. Like that last 30 second mental attitude check.

The nice part about being good on top and forcing yourself to work from the bottom is that at least it's a lot easier to get there.

Im not a fan of bottom game... Not great idea to be on the bottom on a street situation, so I like to have a wrestlers mentality to avoid with having my back full on the ground. I only work from the bottom defensively. Also if the guy's heavier than you, you gast out faster from all the weight he may be putting on your chest. And remember that in the streets there are no weight classes
@lambosnicko
@lambosnicko 2 месяца назад
So by that logic you want to work being good being on your back because one day you may not have a choice but to be on your back. Especially if there is a size difference.
