Nora here! Welcome to The Leca Queen channel.
I love all things indoor PLANTS. I enjoy growing my plants in SOILESS media; yep, no soil! I primarily use LECA (clay balls) to grow my plants using hydroponics (semi-hydroponics).
I show you how my beautiful plants grow in LECA and help you achieve the RESULTS that I have. I cover a TON of leca growing tips, a very comprehensive leca 101 where I hold your hand and help you navigate the world of semi-hydroponics.
I love to experiment and discover different ways of taking care of plants. There is no right or wrong way, just the way that works for you and your plants. Join me on my many plant adventures.

Ok I’m learning more about Leica I’m using it as a bottom layer for my larger pots. With a screw in the middle separating it from the soil at the top. But it is definitely the aerated version so it should soak up extra moisture.

I have no hydroponic stores near me so I have to order from Amazon

Very true! The Leca I tried didn't wick up enough water so the plants send their roots down as fast as possible where the risk of rotting is greatest. My anthuriums seem to prefer coarse pon or coco chunks.

This hits home so bad! I have been struggling with my plant babies because I changed the brand of leca I was using. I usually use an extremely lightweight Leca that floats. And since this was so light, the plants (& their poles) kept leaning / toppling over. So... I moved to a dense one and decided to move several new plants into the new Leca. BIG mistake. It wouldn't wick water much and the plants dried up and died in spite of watering frequently. Undoing the damage now.

I... don't use leca but I use similar setups as one with leca but uses small pebbles/gravel. That is, there is a water reservoir at the bottom. I didn't really have an issue with it. But I don't do it the exactly as with leca though. When I first transplanted my plant into the pebbles, I would sprinkle a very small amount very diluted nutrient solution over the surface of the pebbles everyday, just enough to wet the pebbles. A few weeks later, the roots would grow down into the reservoir and at that point I would switch to just filling up the reservoir directly. Though, sometimes, maybe once a week, I would sprinkle water or diluted nutrient solution over the surface of the pebbles; doesn't seem to be necessary though especially when the plant is already established but I think it helps a little especially when the plants are really small. My idea is to essentially recreate a Kratky hydroponics system where part of the roots are hanging over an air gap, but with pebbles added. The Kratky setup though has the reservoir starts high and then gradually drop as the roots grow longer. I can't really do that with my setup so the first week has me doing essentially hand watering the plant, which is kinda labor intensive. So... maybe you can do the same thing I did for the dense leca. For a few weeks, water the leca every day until the roots grows into the reservoir. Experiment first with a single plant though and see if it works.

I use Brunnings - Hydro clay pebbles which I bought from Bunnings. Its the only brand I have used and so far so good. Its real clay and wicks really well. I woudl definitely recommend it.

Thanks for sharing! I know that brand and have used it myself. I have 2 issues with it, it is very light which is not good for my bigger plants or plants with moss poles, and I find much more costly than buying a bigger bag.

@@TheLecaQueen Ahhh! This is good to know. I am just starting out with small plants and small pots, so don't need the heavier clay pebbles yet. I'll see how things pan out in the future as the plants grow.😊

I got some because it looked so cute...but it feels weird to me. Decided I might just use it as a decorative topper for some succulents. Hopefully, after a good wash, that will keep it from being a total waste! Thanks for sharing! 👏🏽🪴👏🏽

Ah me too, I've been not using it lately and I mixed it with normal level and got root rot on a few plants. Damn it's so cute tho! I guess I'll use the rest as like top layer on my succulents or something
