I've been called the N-word a few times there, but it was never in a malicious way. They thought it was a term of endearment. So, I wasn't offended. The only time I've gotten offended was by a Chinese guy who was being consistently rude to me in my condo. I was more offended because I assumed that he thought I was a black African, and as such could be played cheap. I kept it chill but let him (and the people around us) know that I'm from Baltimore, MD of the USA -- and he doesn't want to see that side of me.

young pinoys see a black man: he must be a badass cool gangsta rapper! and i wanna be like him! it's what they see how you are portrayed in their tv's, radio's, movies...etc.

The easiest way not to offend anyone while dining is to lie and tell them you’re a vegetarian- or you don’t eat certain types of meat or food. It’s understandable to not eat pork or be vegan.

I drove in Bacolod for two weeks with no issue. It’s not Manila I’m sure. But, I drove in São Paulo Brazil many years ago and I’m sure it’s as bad or worse than Manila. You can literally sit in traffic for an hour and go one city block! As I was told when the keys were given to me: “This is not the US, there are no rules only suggestions!”

Very interesting. Here in Japan people are usually very reserved, especially with foreigners. But occasionally you will encounter someone who thinks social boundaries don't apply to non-Japanese people. They're usually pretty drunk and harmless though...Also, it's extremely rare to be asked for money. In all my time here I can only think of 3 times someone asked me for money, and two of them were other foreigners...

That's my biggest challenge is I'm always 15+ minutes early for everything. In the PH, it's a hard habit to break. I'm always super early and I'm always waiting 45 min to an hour for things to start. Unless I'm going to the movies, I gotta learn to not be so dang early to everything.

I've been to Manila but never been to Cebu City or Dumaguete and don't know where to stay at
@keinlieb3818
@keinlieb3818 2 года назад
Suggest getting a hotel room for maybe a couple nights and looking around the area, talking to locals esp the taxi drivers or uber drivers, they can give you great perspective on where the best places to stay based on what you expect out of the city.
@Wickedtingzz
@Wickedtingzz Год назад
@@keinlieb3818 is it easy to get hotels when there ? I want to book flights but they are up to 3k CAD . I’ve found some for just under 1k for round trip . I don’t want to spend 50-100 a night on hotel . I want something I can rent for 1 or 2 weeks at a time and check out the provinces and local life . I want to do Manila for 1 week to see it but I don’t need luxury all inclusive An tips
@keinlieb3818
@keinlieb3818 Год назад
@@Wickedtingzz honestly when I come here I go with air bnb. You can find some pretty nice places for 1 to 2 weeks at a time or even a month at a time for roughly $25 to $50 a night and they are usually nicer than a hotel
@Wickedtingzz
@Wickedtingzz Год назад
@@keinlieb3818 nice . Ya I wanted to go there for a month or 3 week at least . I don’t necessarily need to island hop ( 2 days here , 3 days here , on the move all the time ) I want to relax and be able to explore on my time and not rush anything . I also want to be able to surf . Not sure about the gun laws but going to a gun range would be kool . I don’t really snorkel or scuba drive . Fishing surfing and checking out the provinces ( maybe I find a woman maybe I don’t haha ) . Bottom line I am not looking to spend 5,000 or anything . 2 k is the max I want to spend .. less the better as I don’t need to go shopping or any of that stuff . Strictly going to clear my head and relax / have fun and maybe meet some chicks . People say go to manilla or cebu city first so you can get used to the culture shock . I have lived in a city my whole life , big city with running clean tap water , unlimited hot water for showers and laundry / showers and toilets ( not looking for a squatting vacation or having to bathe with a bucket and ladle
@keinlieb3818
@keinlieb3818 Год назад
@@Wickedtingzz not sure if this will be the place for you or not then lol. Even the nice places can be a little rough. I remember the last time going to SM mall, they didn't have toilet paper in the bathroom and you had to figure things out. This was a big fancy mall in Manila. Also, most places here you don't flush toilet paper because the sewer systems can't handle it. Philippines really is beautiful, but it is definitely a 3rd world country still and there's a lot they still need to fix. When I visit my inlaws in the province, there's no AC, everyone sleeps on the floor (except me because I bring an air mattress), sleep under a net to keep bugs from biting you. If you do come here, make sure you're expectations are reasonable. Manila and Cebu are nice. Boracay and Puerto Galera are some of the most popular beaches with decent infrastructure. 2,000 may not be a realistic amount for air bnb, food, and travel when you get out here. 30 days 25 a night is $750 US or $1k CAD. You'll probably be going out to eat a lot if not all the time so add another $900 for food and you haven't even gotten into travel and how taxi and tricycle drivers love to take advantage of foreigners. I think you might enjoy it, but you really gotta bring your expectations down a bit, especially on the expenses. I have a permanent place here and I spend roughly $2k a month and I don't go out to eat only 4 times a month.
