I grew up in Michigan, and Bewitched has always been my favorite show. I found out that Dick York lived in rockford Michigan, so I was a stupid young man and went to visit him. He and his wife were very kind. A different time, for sure. I never thought that i was intruding, especially since he was so ill, but I was thrilled. I'll always have that memory. Now i'm so sorry for bothering him, but he treated me like an old friend. One of the greatest days of my life.
I often think of celebrities like him who apparently suffer mostly in isolation - what if fans/admirers like us could respectfully support them? I heard none of the cast visited him. It must have been awful to gradually get worse to the point that he had to leave the show. Great that you showed you appreciated him although I can see how nowadays it might feel like intruding, some fans & paparazzi can be awful. I remember who they treated Amy Winehouse when I lived nearby in Camden/London. Like fruit flies, absolutely disgusting ❤🩹
Very insightful. Thank you for posting this. Never knew York had a huge crush on Lizzy. Let's not be too harsh on him. We're all mortals remember :). But I feel so sorry for Poor Dick York. Nearly homeless and broke. Hollywood is so evil. Where's the money for all the syndication, books, souvenirs, and DVD sales over the years?? For me, he was the ⭐. He made me laugh over and over and his soul lives on our screens. And he devoted his final years helping others too. Amazing soul he was. God bless Dick York in Heaven. Peace everyone 🙏
My thoughts exactly. It made me sad how he was cast aside, like an old glove, and how Elizabeth was apparently so cold to him. Especially sad, how she wanted him gone so badly. I imagine that if it were her with such awful back problems, she would’ve felt differently about somebody demanding that she be gone. It was well-known, that the other cast, especially Agnes, absolutely loved Dick York.
Dick York's back injury happened making a movie - the actor's union really let him down by not caring for him & getting him the help he needed to deal with pain & the pain medicine that he became addicted to.
@@patrickflohe7427I don't think it was his back issues, he clearly was in love with her, I think it made her uncomfortable working with him n then She is married to the producer of the show, I certainly can understand how she would feel...
"Bewitched" would never have been the success it was without Dick York. His likability and comedic talent made Darrin someone you would root for, despite the character's flaws.
MFM wasn’t as good as Bewitched by any means. It had none of the breadth or novelty of bewitched. The acting was rather aw do I also on MFM. I didn’t hate it, and like some episodes but it hasn’t ages as well as bewitched. Bewitched is timeless.
this was absolutely amazing to watch. I was deeply touched by the ending and how we all age and we all leave. Thanks for preparing this wonderful documentary
When I was a little girl, my Mom put me, my older sister & baby brother to bed about 7 pm. As soon as we heard the Bewitched theme song come on, out popped me & my sister. Mom said we could come watch only if we could sneak out of the bedroom w/o waking baby brother up.
Great for giving me a behind the scenes look at my favorite show growing up interviews with the great actors actresses Elizabeth Montgomery was such a beautiful woman heartbreaking to know about the bitterness off set
Barry, I love these exposes you've put together. I'm 57, but watched all these (along with my other dream girl Barbara Eden) in reruns in/throughout the '70s and '80s and what wonderful memories they are. You've done a schmokin' great job with these. Keep it up as new info arises. Bravo, my man, bravo!
Absolutely wonderful ❤️ I truly enjoyed watching this special. The magic is still alive and keeps on giving in 2023. You showed the show at its best, but also the strains and demands made on the artists. The long hours, being away from one's children, the two Darrins, and broken relationships. It was cool to watch a special "Made for Canada" ad by Elizabeth Montgomery; she definitely had a knack for ads. I recognised the voice over in the ad who was a well known announcer on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) for the lengedary Canadian comedy duo "Johnny Wayne & Frank Shuster" in "Wayne & Shuster." Frank Shuster's cousin is the one who created the superhero Superman while in Toronto before he left for the USA. Frank Shuster's daughter wrote comedy and married fellow Canadian Lorne Michaels, creator of Saturday Night Live.. Everything connects. We are all connected. Thank you for everything that you do, Mr Pintar. You are such a talented man and versatile artist in your own right. You keep on giving. A heartfelt thanks from Canada 🇨🇦!
Loved this and thank you for putting it together ❤️. I however think it’s unfair for that man in the interview to say that Elizabeth Montgomery couldn’t stand Dick York and because he was in love with her and always staring at her. Let me let you in on a secret…when you’re in that much pain and on pain killers sometimes it’s soothing to look at something pretty which she was. He/They should have had some compassion, js. 😔
As a Bewitched Superfan, I have to say...there was a lot of stuff that I had not seen before. Some true gems in the mix here. Well done sir! Any chance you would be willing to share your trove of Bewitched SFX? 😀 Also, were you able to get ahold of any of the incidental music used on the series? Thanks for the great work Barry!
@@gregorygondron8118yes I adore the SFX. I also though live some of the instrumental background music and other transitional music used in various scenes in bewitched. I also loved some of the transitional music in I Dream of Jeannie. Those transitional pieces are also memorable and I remember them from my childhood.
I loved that show! Still do! In addition to loving the show I was fascinated by the way the "magic" was done. That is what go me interested in television production. You could see how it improved as the show moved along. No more flash frames like in the beginning episodes.
F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S !! Very well put together and then presented as a spectacular tribute to everyone who contributed to such a fantastic show!! Thanks for posting this heart-warming and marvelous gem!
I really enjoyed this lasted video in the series. Really well done and interesting! I can’t believe that video showing off the set ! I’m glad you slowed it down so we could see. Do you know how Agnes Moorehead felt about the series during and after ? Was she proud of her work ? Thanks for another awesome video.
Hey Brad - Ms.Moorehead (as she liked to be called, lol) truly, truly only saw Bewitched as an income source. Some seasons she only worked one day a week.... others more... but i was told it was only for the money. There is a very random book out there about her life that you might want to look up. There is alot in it about her thoughts!
@@bpintar It makes me sad to know that. Takes away some of the magic - some nasty stuff happening behind the scenes that nevertheless resulted in a superb show.
Good god this was the best tv program ever and I never missed one episode I wish Sky TV would do a re-run I could record them all and get my fix of Bewitched much loved still xx
I love playing "spot Melody McCord" (Lizzie's stand-in) throughout the entire series. There's a couple episodes in season eight where Melody's lines are not cut from the final print as Samantha or Serena and we get to hear her voice too (especially the episode of where Larry de-ages). Also, I was curious, have you seen the uncut working print of the pilot at the Television museum in LA? Apparently it runs about 35 minutes and has many of the missing scenes we see in these promos for the pilot.
hey jp, i'm curious, how do you know about her and even her name? and if you know, who is that one extra that is constant in the back ground - dark haired, shortish male.
@@bpintar The Harpies Bizarre website has some of the information, other info from books and some online chat in the early '90s. I had an online conversation years ago with Erin Murphy about Melody's real name, who also confirmed Melody is Sleeping Beauty in season 4. I think you're referring to Gerald York, the extra throughout the entire series. I seem to remember someone calling him "Herbie" in the conversation back in the early '90s.
@@bpintarI can always spot Melody in the scenes where Serena/Samantha are on screen at the same time. They would shoot Melody from the back and you’d see the iconic blonde hair but I could always tell it wasn’t Lizzy. That was Melody. It’s amazing that even as a child, all of this was obvious to me. None of the tricks or special effects (like obvious fishing wires) in scenes went missed by me even in the 70s!!!! It was pretty schlocky by today’s production standards and yet I didn’t care. I adored it. And still do.
Well done. Love your work. Love the video of the commercial collection that the BEWITCHED actors appeared in. Here's a little tidbit. On a recent REELZ BEWITCHED special, it was mentioned that Dick Sargent called Dick York and discussed the role with him. I just read an article about Elizabeth Montgomery during the production of BEWITCHED and the interviewer asked her what she did during their three month break in production. She said "Nothing." Well, it turns out Liz would play multiple sets of tennis daily but, not against women, against guys. She felt women didn't play hard enough. She and Bill Asher were sports fans. I think Steve Lawrance's version is the best known. I love the one called "Samantha'.
How awful to watch Dick York with his emphysema, yet STILL smoking. My father had asthma, emphysema, and COPD. He smoked from the age of 13 until 60. By the time he stopped smoking, it was too little, too late. He lost his life at 75.
Love this. I grew up with bewitched, my absolute favourite show. I still have my Bewitched colouring book from 1968. I sent away for b&w VHS tapes of first couple episodes , introduced to my girls when they were young, they loved them too. Over the years gifted me the whole series. I have never seen this footage before, brilliant! I vaguely remember the lid commercial being Canadian. Thanks look forward to more.🤗
Dick York was a marvelous actor, but MORE importantly as his post-acting life makes clear, a wonderful HUMAN BEING. For him to express sadness at Dick Sargent's situation when he took over says it all.
I'm not trying to defend dick york, it's just that Elizabeth is a beautiful woman and after all he was playing her husband on the show and kissing her and being close to her as a husband would, so I wasn't shocked he got a crush on her, he just needed to know his boundaries.🤷♀️
Love all the sound effects. It was one of my most favourite things about the show were those sounds. They’re so memorable. That, as well as the incantation choreography were the reasons the show succeeded so much. The only other sounds that are as memorable or iconic are Jeannie’s “blink and nod” sound effects as well as Jeannie’s pink smoke fumescence.
Thank you 💜 I enjoyed this very much. I believe even though Elizabeth had those feelings towards Dick York it may have possible helped the chemistry between the two onscreen. Although uncomfortable for her, they may have found a way to work together. I hope to believe that anyway. Being born in 1962 this is my childhood. I always get warm thoughts watching Bewitched and thinking about that time period. I appreciate you giving us more insight, details of the actors and show. Thank you again! 🥰💜✌
I get we're all responsible for our own actions, but Dick York didn't have the acceptance and help that is available today. People back then were just fed by the doctors especially actors. No one was really keeping an eye on the prescriptions that were being written back then. Even so they found a way where there's a will there's a way. Poor guy to just be where you really are helpless and hopeless. Unfortunately he didn't have luxury that drug addicts have today, which is help & support. But even so he had a great life.
Hey, thanks Ron. Unfortunately, they're not mine to sell, but i know that nice guy who shared them with me will likely see your questions and perhaps respond. He contacted me when he heard I was shooting "Bewitched Continued 4" and actually made me promise I would not share them with anyone - so, gotta honor that :)
@@bpintar It's interesting to me that aside from a few making it to "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Tabitha", the "Bewitched" sound effects have pretty much stayed with the series. Other similar SFX, like those used in "Bell, Book, and Candle" and "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir", which turned up on other shows in the '70s, the "Bewitched" sound effects have pretty much stayed unique to the show. I've pulled dozens from the series over the years and spent many hours removing background noise, but the SFX you shared in your video sound amazing. I was happy to hear the season four pop-in sound in your selection; it wasn't used in any of the other seasons.
When I was younger , I didn’t like Dick York as thought his character was whiny. Later on I did realize he was the better actor of the 2. Sargent was up for the role originally. And then just replaced York Odd if Dick was interested in Elizabeth since her husband was on set. Didn’t she run off with another guy on set ? So the irony. Paul Lind was in an episode as a driver Ed instructor before he came back as her uncle.
Alice Ghostley also originally appeared in a much earlier episode of 'Bewitched' as another character as well. It was either the 1st or 2nd season, and she played a character named 'Naomi', a mortal housekeeper for the Stephens in one episode. The producers liked her so much that they brought her back as 'Esmeralda' in the later seasons. She acted as kind of a replacement for Marion Lorne's 'Aunt Clara' with her dysfunctional witch powers screwing things up.
Only Elizabeth and Dick truly knew what their relationship off set was like. You’re basing your opinion on this video yet you never met them in person. So you don’t really have any actual proof. Still I love watching Bewitched. Too bad the Movie wasn’t as great as the TV Series.@@blabbermouth777
I can see why Elizabeth didn't enjoy interviews. Watching this one, it's as if she's PLAYING the part of Elizabeth. When I met her she was bubbly, warm and spritely. In this, it feels like she's weighted down with the burden of being "perfect"
@@nunyab8003 Yes; it's at UCLA, I think. It's the same as the aired pilot except for a few extra scenes, a few different shots, no animated opening, and different background music.
Well if Dick Sargent had started the show I doubt it would have lasted past the first two seasons. No chemistry because Sergent was gay!no matter how much she liked him. I was a very huge fan.
Paul Lynde was very good as uncle Arthur but he didn’t have to have romantic chemistry with the female lead. I liked Dick Sergeant but his delivery of lines to Liz came off as Darrin being an ass to Sam. There was no romantic chemistry and Dick Sergeant wasn’t the best choice as Darrin. As for Robert Reed Florence Henderson has said she had to help him along. Robert Reed was very believable as a father and a husband. Dick Sergeant wasn’t believable to me. Liz went five seasons with someone she had chemistry with then someone who was her friend but had no romantic chemistry with. By the way one of my very best friends was a gay man and when we watched bewitched he pointed out the second Darrin had no chemistry with Samantha because he was gay! I didn’t even know he was gay until my friend told me. He also told me Maurice Sams dad and Uncle Arthur was gay. Regardless if they liked each other or not Dick York and Liz had chemistry. That’s why it worked so well for five seasons.
@@katluann Paul Lynde wasn't supposed to have a romantic chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery. 🤔 Did you know that Dick Sargent was originally cast as Darren Stevens along with Tammy Grimes as Samantha? Just because a person is gay doesn't mean that they have to have a romantic chemistry with another actor. It is called acting, after all. Actors don't HAVE to like each other for something to work. That is what acting is all about.
I don't think Dixk York was in love with Eluzabeth, he had a beautful wife and 5 kids, they stayed married until he died. I think Liz was jealousof York being so loved by fans he was a huge part of the show that when he left due to his back injury the show decline was obvious, in the other hand Liz was jumping from husband to husband , and having an affair with the other director of Bewitched.
The cover versions of bewitched only work when done by a male singer because it’s like a love song or tribute to “Samantha” the main character. Don’t like the Peggy Lee or other versions. The Frankie Randall one isn’t bad as a Frank Sinatra/Frankie Avalon knock-off-style, but… Having said that, I’m glad they went with an instrumental. It makes the show more timeless. The vocal versions would’ve dated badly because a singer’s singing styoe becomes linked to a “decade” (eg; very 60s) and then the show is forever linked with that decade. Instead somehow, Bewitched has remained timeless in all our minds.
I don’t mean to offend anyone but I absolutely refuse to watch the last three seasons with Dick Sargent. Dick York totally eclipsed Sargent. Sargent never seemed to capture the husband/father role. I never saw him ever give a nurturing look of word to Tabitha or Adam.
Samentha didn't always had the amazing beautiful breathtaking flying suit 🎉 the first time she when flying with her mother was on s2 e5 she had a blue 💙 suit on she was very mad at her husband because he was yelling and screaming 😱🙀 at his amazing beautiful breathtaking wife and Darrin thought that she was over sensitive 😢😢😢😢😢😢 well I don't think so the way he was yelling and screaming if it was me I would go too.
It seems to me that Sam was àn over achiever. She works on Sunday, She is trying so hard to be a good mortal housewife. that she does housework seven days a week.
stop pushing false narratives about Dick York, none of his performances does he ever look to be in pain or drugged out.....his side of the story was there was weird cheating and real witchy stuff going on and they hung him upside down in an episode and left him there where he had a seizure and HE quit. If loosey LIZZY didn't like him it was because he had a gorgeous wife and was NOT under her spell....so stop with this crap
hmmm jonathan - could you please send me links to the dick york fan interview.. i tried so hard to find a better copy; or the stand in samples, and actually i'd actually pay for a good version of the lux commercial. Just let me know, you sound like a great expert who knows these things!!!
@bpintar Hi. Unfortunately the ones I saw on RU-vid are not good quality either. I certainly wouldn't call myself an expert, just a big fan of the show and Liz Montgomery!
I'm not watching any of your videos, we were brought up watching this wonderful show. I don't give a damn what went on behind the scenes. You just want many likes, stop spreading rumors on a great show.
